Koufax's dominance was short but sweet

If one were to put music to a career, the dominant notes in Sandy Koufax's would most effectively be reached with violins. For Babe Ruth, it would be base drums for obvious reasons. But for Koufax, violins bittersweet and vaguely ambiguous, like gypsy music. Who says you can't get much better once you've reached the major leagues? Sandy Koufax was just 36-40 with 405 walks in 691 2/3 innings his first six years. Koufax was the J.D. Salinger of baseball. He was an elegant craftsman, brilliant to the extreme in the exercise of his talent, but an obsessively reluctant celebrity, less comfortable in the limelight than in the hermit-like world he fashioned for himself off the pitcher's mound. Like Salinger, author of the classic "The Catcher in the Rye," Koufax was given over to public adulation only a short time as careers go (Koufax's was ended by injury at age 30). He was a performer so true to himself that, in the end, he refused to let money change him or make him linger. When he knew he was damaged goods, he decided his career was over, not the Los Angeles Dodgers. At the peak of his game, he passed up a guaranteed salary for 1967 and simply walked away. Conquering batters had not been so simple. For much of his first six seasons, the 6-foot-2, 210-pound left-hander languished on the bench. Finally, in 1961, he showed the first consistent signs of greatness, striking out a National League record 269 batters. Then, in his final five seasons, he dominated.

"Sandy would strike me out two or three times a game. And I knew every pitch he was going to throw fastball, breaking ball or whatever. Actually, he would let you look at it. And you still couldn't hit it," says Hall of Fame center fielder Willie Mays about Sandy Koufax on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. If one were to put music to a career, the dominant notes in Sandy Koufax's would most effectively be reached with violins. For Babe Ruth, bass drums. For Ted Williams, a snarl of brass and woodwinds. But for Koufax, violins bittersweet and vaguely ambiguous, like gypsy music. The impression of Koufax persists of him being the J.D. Salinger of baseball. Koufax was an elegant craftsman, brilliant to the extreme in the exercise of his talent, but an obsessively reluctant celebrity, less comfortable in the limelight than in the hermit-like world he fashioned for himself off the pitcher's mound. Player Profile: Sandy Koufax
Name: Sanford "Sandy" Koufax Left-handed pitcher Lived: Career span: Hall of Fame? Yes (1972) Primary teams: Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers (entire career) Best Year: 1963 : 25 wins, 1.88 ERA, 306 K Major Awards: MVP: 1963; Cy Young Award: 1963,1965,1966; World Series MVP: 1963, 1965 Rank on Greatest Players list Player notes : For a five year period (1962-1966), Koufax was as dominant a pitcher as baseball has ever seen. During that period he won three Cy Young Awards, one MVP Award, and two World Series MVP Awards while leading the Dodgers to three National League Pennants and two World Championships. He combined with the late Don Drysdale to form one of the most feared pitching tandems in baseball history. This period of greatness came after six years of struggle to rise above being a .500 pitcher. Once he got going, though, he achieved a level of greatness rarely seen in a pitcher. For most of his career he was pitching in great pain, however, and after a stellar season in 1966 Koufax became that rare player who retired at the top of his game.

Sandy Koufax: A Lefty`s Legacy
By Jane Leavy Harper Collins
ISBN: 0-06-019533-9 Available for purchase at Amazon.com Warming Up Three decades after he threw his last pitch, Sandy Koufax was back in uniform at Dodgertown, a rare occurrence given his belief that baseball uniforms do not flatter those of a certain age. This is where he made his debut in the spring of 1955 and Vero Beach is where he has chosen to make his after-baseball home - an odd choice for a man said not to like the game and the attention it brings him. Mornings when he`s in town, he works out in the training room. The clubhouse guys gave him a key. He brings the bagels. On this particular day in February 1997, he was at Dodgertown for a seminar on sports medicine. He had been recruited Frank Jobe, the Dodgers` team physician, to teach an audience of biomechanical experts how to throw a ball. He couldn`t very well say no: he was on Jobe`s operating table at the time. He had torn his rotator cuff falling down the stairs. The Boys of Summers Past are not immune to senior moments. Thinking of Koufax as clumsy is as disconcerting as the sight of the familiar "32" confined to this minimalist stage: sitting behind a buntingdraped table in a multipurpose room at what is now known as the Conference Center at Dodgertown. He looked thinner than in memory, thirty pounds less than his playing weight, the legacy of an afterlife as a marathoner. The old baggy uniforms always made him look less imposing than he was. His hair was thinner too, but silver, not gray. He had the appearance of a man aging as well as one possibly can, somehow managing to look graceful in uniform while perched beside a droopy fern.

Koufax's career was obviously cut short because of arthritis. Yet where do you rank him among the all-time greats? The Commissioner 11-28-2002, 09:13 AM I haven't read it yet, but I've read several reviews of the book all enthusiastically praising it. 11-28-2002, 04:40 PM I found Leavy's book to be an absolutely superb bit of investigative reporting, high drama and sheer poetry by a lady who knows her stuff!
It’s not a traditional biography, but a behind-the-scenes look at the man and the legend, including a fascinating description of the kinetics and physiological aspects of pitching that Koufax seemed to know instinctively and which made him one of a kind. Read it and you’ll understand how he was able to do the remarkable things he did on the pitcher's mound.
In an inspired bit of plotting, Leavy wraps her story around an inning-by-inning recap of Sandy’s perfect game, including verbatim reprints of Vin Scully’s memorable call of the entire game and particularly the pulse-pounding ninth inning. She did her homework, and includes priceless recollections by Santo, Banks, Hendley, Amalfitano of what it was like trying to hit Sandy that day.
Leavy pays proper attention to Sandy's role as a Jewish icon and offers an interesting examination of his famous decision not to pitch the first game of the '65 Series.

They started with the top 40, and voted on their Tiers 40 at a time until they had 29 left at the bottom.
Now that we will be adding Eddie Murray and Gary Carter, I figure it's time to revise the list with the throngs of new posters here.

CONVERSATION: LEFTY'S LEGACY
October 21, 2002
Media correspondent Terence Smith interviews Jane Leavy about her new book on baseball legend Sandy Koufax.
TERENCE SMITH: On September 9, 1965, Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers threw a perfect game. 27 men came up to bat; 27 men went down no runs, hits, walks, or men on base. The Dodgers beat the Cubs 1-0, and would go on to take the World Series. It was Koufax's fourth no- hitter, a feat which cemented his place as the greatest pitcher of his era, and, some would argue, of all time. The famously reclusive Dodger is captured in a new book, Sandy Koufax: A Lefty's Legacy. The author is sportswriter and novelist Jane Leavy. Jane, welcome to the broadcast. JANE LEAVY: Thank you. TERENCE SMITH: What made Sandy Koufax so special, both as a pitcher and a person? TERENCE SMITH: And you should explain that he did so because he had, what, terrible arthritis. JANE LEAVY: What they called it in those days was traumatic arthritis, and he injured his arm sliding back into second base in August, 1964. It was never the same after that. But sports medicine was really medieval in those days. All they had was ice, which was a new innovation in keeping swelling down, and they could shoot the cortisone directly into his elbow joint. And they put on this stuff called Capslun, a paste made of red hot chili peppers that smelled so bad and burned so much that when Jim Kott went to shake his hand in the 1965 World Series, he had to run away. It felt like camphor. And he said he couldn't be near him, and he just walked away.

A biography of Hall of Fame baseball player and greatest left-handed pitcher in Los Angeles Dodgers history.
Sandy Koufax (Baseball Hall of Famers)

Author: Geraldine Giordano
Age Level: 09-12
Considered one of the best pitchers in baseball history, Koufax threw the ball so fast and hard that batters watched themselves strike out against him. Studying his moves and pitches made no difference; Koufax could beat the best batter at the plate. Because Koufax played in the majors before he was really ready, he struggled to perfect his skills. For many years, he battled to control the ball. Later, Koufax, who came from a traditional Jewish family, had to overcome public scrutiny because of his religious beliefs.
Koufax
Author: Edward Gruver Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax may have had the best consecutive years of any pitcher ever from 1961 through 1966, winning 149 games while losing just forty-seven with a miniscule carned run average and more than one strikeout per inning. He retired at age thirty because of severe arthritis in his pitching arm. This book chronicles his turbulent life and focuses on the reverential mystique that envelops the Los Angeles Dodgers even to this day. Koufax includes extensive interviews with childhood friends; Dodger teammates, opponents, and front office personnel; and sports journalists who covered his career. Koufax will reacquaint fans with a legendary player from their youth and introduce a new generation to one of baseball's greatest pitchers.

baseball go dodgers! The Dodgers are one of baseball's most storied franchises. While today the Dodgers play in Los Angeles, they called Brooklyn, New York their home until 1958. Founded in the 1860's, the team was originally called the Brooklyn Athletics. In 1884, they changed their name to the Brooklyn Bridegrooms and later the Superbas. However it was the famous Ebbets Field that gave this franchise its final name. During their years at Ebbetts, players often dodged trolley cars to reach the ballpark leading to the nickname "Trolly Dodgers," later shortened to "Dodgers." This moniker became the official name of the team in 1913.
