He won 25 games three times, captured five straight ERA titles, and set a new standard with 382 strikeouts in 1965. His fastball and devastating curve enabled him to pitch no-hitters in four consecutive seasons, culminating with a perfect game in 1965. Encyclopedia Koufax, Sandy (Sanford Koufax) ( kō făks ), 1935–, American baseball player, b. New York City. A superb pitcher, he played (1955–66) with the Dodgers, remaining on the team when the franchise was moved from Brooklyn, N.Y., to Los Angeles. Three times he received the Cy Young Award for his outstanding pitching (1963, 1965, 1966), and he pitched in four World Series (1959, 1963, 1965–66). A left-hander with overwhelming speed and a brilliant curve, Koufax struck out 2,396 batters between 1955 and 1966, when he was forced into premature retirement by an arm ailment at the peak of his career (he won 26 and 27 games his last two seasons). In 1972 he became the youngest player ever elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Bibliography See his autobiography (1966); biographies by E. Gruver (2000) and J. Leavy (2002).

Yom Kippur and Sandy Koufax:
They'll Always Go Together
by Sandor Slomovits October, 2000On October 6, 1965, Sandy Koufax, the overpowering lefty for the Los Angeles Dodgers, did not pitch in the first game of the World Series against the Minnesota Twins because game day fell on Yom Kippur. My father was not a baseball fan then. Our family had emigrated to the United States less than six years before. He was fifty five years old and still struggling to learn English and many other new skills, like driving a car. Baseball was far down his list of priorities. He didn't know a home run from a rerun, a base hit from a face lift. He didn't know a baseball pitcher from a pitcher of water - and couldn't care any less. "It's a stupid game," he announced in his thick accent after watching a few minutes on TV once. "Not like football. Now there's a game!" My father was referring to soccer, calling it by the name it is known throughout the world, not American football, which he also thought idiotic. But then, Sandy Koufax refused to pitch the first game of the World Series. Sandy Koufax went to shul that day. He fasted. And, to my father, baseball was still a stupid game, but all of a sudden, it was not played by only stupid people. Sandy Koufax did not hide his Jewishness. He took a righteous stand. And my father, along with millions of Jews, was proud of him. "He's a good Jewish boy," my father said. His highest praise.

Career Pitching Record Other Resources "If there was ever a better pitcher, it was before my time," Dodger manager Walter Alston said of Koufax. Yet it took Koufax years to become a genuine star and, once he did, his stardom lasted only a short time because of physical problems. His parents divorced when he was three years old and he took the name of his mother's second husband, Irving Koufax, when she remarried. Koufax starred in basketball in high school, though he played sandlot baseball during the summer, usually as a first baseman. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Koufax went to the University of Cincinnati on a basketball scholarship in 1953 and averaged 10 points a game as a freshman. He also pitched for the baseball team and, after striking out 51 hitters in 32 innings, he left college to sign with the NL's Brooklyn Dodgers for a $140,000 bonus. A left-hander, Koufax was an exceptionally hard thrower, and that was his problem for a long time. In his second major league start in 1955, he pitched a 2-hitter. He said later that performance hurt him, explaining, "I threw real hard in the game, and it worked. . . . It took me a long time to learn that it was wrong." During his first 6 seasons with the Dodgers, who moved to Los Angeles in 1958, Koufax won just 36 games while losing 40. The turning point in his career came during an exhibition game against the Chicago White Sox in 1961. With the bases loaded and no outs, catcher Norm Sherry came to the mound and told him, "Don't force your fastball. That's when you get real wild. Throw it easy."

Southpaw Sandy Koufax earned a place among baseball's greatest pitchers with a dominating performance between 1962 and 1966. During that span, he won 111 games and lost 34, led the league in ERA each season (averaging under two earned runs per game), paced the NL in strikeouts (1963, 1965, and 1966) and shutouts (three times), and pitched four no-hitters, including a perfect game in 1965. At the height of his career, traumatic arthritis in his elbow threatened permanent disability and hastened his retirement after the 1966 season.

PERFECT GAMES
Baseball's Perfect Games
Pitchers who have achieved perfection, retiring all 27 batters they faced, and the details of their big day:
Randy Johnson, Arizona Diamondbacks
When: May 18, 2004 vs. Braves
Where: Turner Field, Atlanta
Line: 9 innings, hits, 13 K's
At 40 years and 251 days, Johnson became the oldest pitcher to throw a perfect game... Johnson's 13 K's were the second-highest total ever recorded in a perfect game... The Braves had never been involved in a perfect game, and neither had the D-Backs... Johnson joined Hall of Famers Cy Young and Jim Bunning as the only pitchers to throw a perfect game in one league, and a no-hitter in the other. Johnson previously no-hit the Detroit Tigers on June 2, 1990, while he was with the Seattle Mariners... The nearly 14 years between Johnson's two-nitters is the longest span in baseball history... The final out was pinch-hitter Eddie Perez, who struck out swinging... Johnson threw the first no-hitter in Diamondbacks history, as well as the first in Mariners history.
David Cone, New York Yankees

Sandy Koufax, Out of Brooklyn

Sports Book Review by Harvey Frommer
Back in 1991 I had the honor of being selected as the Guest Curator and Executive Producer of "Stars of David: Jews in Sports" at the Klutznik Museum in Washington, D.C. The exhibit was to run for six months and was envisioned as showcasing memorabilia and memories of Jewish athletes and their accomplishments. I set out on my mission making phone calls and writing letters to such as Sid Luckman, Dolph Schayes, Red Holzman, Red Auerbach, Mark Spitz and Sandy Koufax , the man known in some circles as the "Greta Garbo of sports," who grew up in Brooklyn just like me. Much to my delight and surprise, Koufax contacted me and said that his three Cy Young Award trophies were at Dodger Stadium and not at the Baseball Hall of Fame and that he would tell Dodger owner Peter O'Malley to arrange to have them shipped to the Klutznik Museum so that they could be part of the exhibit. He also volunteered to send two autographed baseballs along - one for the exhibit and one for me.
