BY RICK PAULAS NEW PITCHES FOR THE 2004 BASEBALL SEASON It Goes to Eleven Fastball, Matt Anderson Four years ago, the world (Detroit) was rocked with the emergence of this 6-4 flamethrower. During his one inning of work in games, it was rare for Anderson not to hit triple digits on the radar gun. And then the injuriesŠ In 2000, he pitched 74.1 innings. The three seasons that followed showed Anderson to have the durability of Glass Joe in Mike Tyson's Punch Out , with yearly inning totals of 56, 11, and 23. That isn't a good trend. Good thing that Anderson has been working on adding a little something to his fastball this off-season. Instead of throwing 98-100 mph per pitch, as he was doing in 2000, Anderson has found a way to hit up to 170 mph with his new heater. The physics are still being worked out, doctors are mystified, but it has something to do with the dislocation and relocation of his shoulder between pitches. Every batter he has faced so far has wept openly. The three bats (out of hundreds) that actually did make contact became kindling to be used by the Campfire Girls. Literally. The bats caught on fire. Even the metal one.

Sports Lifestyles Editorial ... Home July 3, 2004 In the Batter's Box
with Eric LeBlanc Dull Deadline? Did we forget to mention to Major League Baseball that the trading deadline isn’t until July 31? During the past couple of weeks, it has been a feeding frenzy on the trade market and following the pattern of last year, most of the high profile players are gone before the deadline. In the past two plus weeks, there have been four major deals in the majors. Involved were two teams essentially giving up on their seasons and five teams who are hoping that they acquired the key piece to the puzzle that will send them to the playoffs. Let’s look at each trade: Mariners trade P Freddy Garcia and C Ben Davis to the White Sox for C Miguel Olivo, OF Jeremy Reed and INF Michael Morse This is a good trade for both teams. Freddy Garcia gives the White Sox another top quality pitcher in addition to Esteban Loaiza and Mark Buehrle and will give them four good starters until Scott Schoeneweis returns from the disabled list. And when he returns, the White Sox will have the best five-man rotation in the AL Central. Garcia, despite his 5-7 record, has a 3.35 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 113 innings. He just was not getting the run support in Seattle. But now the White Sox will provide him with more than enough runs. Chicago has outscored Seattle by 121 runs this season. The White Sox also get backup catcher Ben Davis who will adequately help spell Sandy Alomar.

document.write(''); 08/19/2001 - Updated 04:46 AM ET Koch is your Billy Goat By Nate Davis, USATODAY.com By J.P. Moczulski, AP Toronto's Koch was a Goat named Billy after Saturday's woeful outing. Roto Roost tidbits SATURDAY'S ROTO MONSTER Entering Saturday's game, the Twins had lost eight in a row, including five straight to lowly Tampa Bay. Putrid offensive production was largely to blame for the team's slide from the AL Central catbird seat. But Corey Koskie and Brian Buchanan finally got untracked, and the Twins halted their slide. On an evening lacking truly Monstrous performances, Koskie is your Roto Monster after going 2-for-4 with two homers and four RBI. He broke a 2-for-26 tailspin while improving his season power numbers to 20 long balls and 75 RBI. Buchanan went a lofty 4-for-4, homering once and scoring three runs. If the Twins can build on this production, they could creep back into the playoff picture.

BY GARY LIBMAN ssssssssss PHOTOGRAPHY BY GARY WALDROP
This special to Clemson World is for Clemson baseball aficionados as they anticipate the major league season and especially for those who have an eye on the spring camps of Pittsburgh and Toronto.
I n the clubhouse before a late-season baseball game in Anaheim, Toronto Blue Jays rookie Billy Koch asked a reporter how to get to the playing field.
The location of the bullpen also mystified Koch. As the relief pitcher sat in the dugout before the game, a reporter gestured toward the bullpen in left field. "Oh, that's where it is?" Koch asked.
If the former Tiger pitcher resembled a tourist on his first visit to American League stadiums, he soon felt at home. A starting pitcher in the minor leagues, he adapted quickly to stretching and warming up in only a few pitches in the bullpen and to trotting to the mound under bright lights in the eighth and ninth innings to finish games.
By the end of the season the 6-foot-3, 218-pound right-hander with the shaved head and small goatee had saved 31 games, the most ever by an American League rookie.

How To Play Beane Ball
The Oakland A's Billy Beane has perfected the new rules for winning at baseball on the field and in the books. Some say that he's a genius who has mastered the future of the game. He says that doing more with less just means playing by the numbers. From: Issue 70 May 2003 Page 84 By: Keith H. Hammonds Photographs by: Brad Hines "I was up at 4:30 this morning, on the Net. I love going to Stetson University's site, or James Madison's, to see what their ball teams did last night. That's the fun part of this game that's the foundation. To me, that's why we're in this game because we love it at the grass roots, where it's still at its most pure."

Click on the year to report a comment problem (misspelling, premature cutoff, weird characters or rendering, etc.) Rule of Commerce: Stock up on inexpensive goods that others overvalue. In the case of the A’s, it’s saves. Run Isringhausen’s saves up, let him move along and be someone else’s financial problem—we’ll take the compensation. Run Billy Koch’s saves up, and send him to an organization that can’t even identify its own good relievers for Keith Foulke, Joe Valentine, and a patient catcher with some upside. It’s a good plan, and as long as some GMs pay more attention to baseball’s arcane accounting system than performance, someone will always overpay for a “proven closer.” Nobody in the history of the game reached 100 saves faster than Koch did. That fact and two bucks will get him a latte in T.O., now that the Jays have sent him to the A's. Despite three-digit heat, Koch goofs around with five different pitches. Unless he’s as stubborn as his billy-goat beard implies, he’ll pare back the menu options and rise to the ranks of the elite.
