Clemson Baseball Draft
Benson, Koch Go in Top Five of Major League Draft
Clemson had two of the first four selections in the major league baseball draft on June 4, 1996. Kris Benson was the number-one pick of the draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates, while Billy Koch went in the first round as the number-four pick of the Toronto Blue Jays. They rank as the first and third highest draft picks in Clemson history regardless of sport. Heading into this year's draft, Banks McFadden, as the number-three pick of the 1940 NFL draft, was the highest pick in Clemson history regardless of sport. This is the second time in the history of the baseball draft (which dates to 1965) that one school has had two top five choices. In 1978, Arizona State third baseman Bob Horner was the number-one pick and teammate Hubie Brooks, a shortstop, was the third pick. In 1976, the same school had two of the top six picks. Arizona State pitcher Floyd Bannister was the top choice and Ken Landreaux was the sixth choice. The only other time a school has had two top 10 picks took place in 1988 when Oklahoma State's Monty Farris (SS, 6th pick) and Robin Ventura (3B, 10th pick) were taken.

to access the archives. When longtime Mariners and Orioles setup man Arthur Rhodes became a free agent after the 2003 season, several teams quickly expressed interest in signing him as a closer. While Rhodes had a superb history of success in the seventh and eighth innings and was especially brutal on left-handed hitters, he had never been any team's go-to man in the ninth. The response in vast swaths of the press was Pavlovian even by baseball writers' standards, with a virtual conga line forming to state that Rhodes was not only a first-time closer, but had lost velocity and had saved only 17 games in 44 chances in his career. This one man and that one statistic encapsulate well the strange ways in which closers are evaluated, and often misvalued. Overemphasis on the ambiguous "save" statistic and on velocity are among the most common misperceptions. Rhodes' 17-for-44 "success rate" highlights how the save statistic can become distorted. As a setup man, Rhodes rarely entered the game in the traditional save situationthat is, making an appearance in the ninth inning for a team with a slight lead. But setup men are charged with blown saves for losing leads in earlier innings in what are not actually save situations. And among the many leads Rhodes inherited in his eight strong seasons of middle relief work, he lost 27 of them. The frequent citation of the 17-for-44 statistic, rather than the more meaningful comparison of Rhodes' blown leads to his held ones, demonstrates the blind obsession with oversimplified analysis that often dominates both the media and traditional baseball thought. (Incidentally, Rhodes has converted six times in seven traditional save situations this season.)

In 1977, New York City was touched by a special madness, from sports to politics
April 17, 2005 Ladies and Gentlemen, the Bronx Is Burning: 1977, Baseball, Politics, and the Battle for the Soul of a City
By Jonathan Mahler
356 pp., illustrated, ADVERTISEMENT When Jonathan Mahler, the author of this problematic portrait of a once-great city, was 8 and visited the New York of his father's childhood for the first time, ''it didn't take long to figure out that this wasn't the place I had imagined." Fun City had become Fear City, and the liberal vision that had once opened the golden door to millions now looked like a dead end. Nothing seemed to work any longer: not the government, the schools, the hospitals, or even union labor. Ethnic, class, and racial tensions simmered. The Bronx in particular, home to baseball's greatest franchise and the city's most bitterly disenfranchised, had become the poster child for urban blight. In 1977, everything in New York seemed to come to a full boil, including a July power blackout that triggered looting and arson. The spectacle of shirtless young men walking the streets carrying televisions and sofas atop their heads horrified the nation yet in retrospect appears to have been a cleansing event, marking the bottom that the city had seemed intent on hitting after decades of lofty vision and abysmal governance. Truly an annus horribilis for New York, 1977 nonetheless provides Mahler with a gold mine of great settings, players, and themes. Was it the city's worst year ever? Though a historian might argue for 1835, 1863, or 1911, the logic of Mahler's choice is compelling.

Beane has looked sharp by doing things his way
By Dan Shaughnessy, Globe Columnist, 9/28/2003 SEATTLE It's easy to forget that for a day, Billy Beane was general manager of the 2003 Red Sox. In a mad scramble before last year's winter meetings, Beane accepted the job. ADVERTISEMENT "For about 12 hours," he says now, with a chuckle. "Probably the shortest tenure of any Red Sox GM." Beane spent several hours with new assistant Theo Epstein, trying to work out compensation for the transfer of his own services to Boston. Oakland assistant Paul DePodesta wanted coveted prospect Kevin Youkilis for Beane. We all know what happened next. Beane changed his mind and called Sox owner John W. Henry. Henry and Sox CEO Larry Lucchino graciously accepted Beane's resignation and turned to the 28-year-old Epstein. Which has worked out pretty well.

Subject: Decision-Making Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at 9:14 AM PT Rob, I'm not sure I agree with you about the media coverage of Moneyball . I've actually been impressed by how few reviewers have misread the book. Most reviewers seem to have a decent grasp on the fundamentals of Oakland's success and have done a good job of distinguishing between the method (sabermetrics, roughly speaking) and the man (Beane). (This is a testament to Lewis' ability to make complicated ideas accessible.) The people who have misread the book, ironically, are people in the baseball community. Of course, as you explained yesterday, they've got a psychological investment in doing so. Continue Article placeAd(2,'slate.homepage/slate') But you're right that, even though statistics are obviously important to the A's, the real key to the team's success is the way "they think not only about statistics, but nearly everything else that comes with running a baseball team." By Matt Pitzer A debate about banning a substance that by most accounts contributed to a young player's death. An owner claiming, in March, that he has no chance to re-sign a star player. A fat pitcher practically boasts of his public intoxication and creates a firestorm in his clubhouse. The commissioner ponders bringing back one of our era's most notorious gamblers. Ah, glorious baseball is back. The season would have started this week in Japan before fears about traveling abroad sacked that idea. So Opening Day which hasn't deserved those capital letters for several years gets bumped back to Sunday when the defending champion Anaheim Angels host the Texas Rangers. The real meat of the schedule kicks in on Monday, but even that day isn't what it used to be. Most years, the real Opening Day is on the same day as the NCAA championship, making one of the great sports days of the year. Baseball all day. NCAA final at night. But thanks to quirks in scheduling and baseball having to start at the tail end of March because they've tacked on so many playoff rounds in October, that day is ruined this year.
