Charles Darwin's theory that the strongest species will find a way to outlast the weaker ones can easily be applied to Major League Baseball as well. Especially this time of year. The strongest teams go on a winning streak, the best players get hot , and issues like injuries and playing time work themselves out for the good teams and bury the bad ones. The strong are outlasting the weak. At the same time, intangible elements about the baseball season begin to take their toll. Pitchers who have spent the whole season giving up gopher balls in hitter-friendly parks wear down and either get hurt or burn out mentally; batters get weary of trying to pump home runs out of SBC Park or Petco Park and go into slumps. Yes, even the ballparks themselves play a role in determining which teams are the fittest to survive.

Don't miss these great baseball flicks
By Jim Caple
ESPN.com
Angelina Jolie was at Seattle's stadium recently filming her new movie, "Life, Or Something Like It." Told that Jolie's character dates a Mariners second baseman in the movie, Seattle second baseman Bret Boone replied, "She's a lucky woman." Boone, not exactly the most humble player in the majors, said Brad Pitt is the actor who could best portray him in a movie, though reliever Brett Tomko suggested that given Boone's height (he's listed at 5-10), a better choice might be Haley Joel Osmant, the kid from "Sixth Sense." Jolie's movie is just part of a recent surge in baseball movies. What with all the hype for Billy Crystal's account of the Roger Maris-Mickey Mantle home run chase, "61*," you may have missed these recent baseball flicks that unfortunately went direct to video. . Comedian Yakov Schmirnoff's homage to the memorable race between Rickey Henderson (Don Cheadle) and Alfonso Soriano (John Turtorro) when they both pursued Babe Ruth's career walks record and a tense nation watched from the edge of its seats. You'll cry when Rickey's hair falls out in clumps. You'll laugh when Rickey forgets what team he's playing for. You'll applaud when Soriano works the count to 2-2 before popping out.

An important cog in the Twins' amazing transformation from last-place losers in 1990 to World Champions the following year, Knoblauch was named Rookie of the Year in 1991 after replacing the Twins' ineffective troika of Al Newman Nelson Liriano , and Fred Manrique at second base. The scrappy second baseman soon established himself as an All-Star performer on a team that would quickly return to mediocrity; frustrated by his franchise's futility, Knoblauch's relationship with the Minnesota fans soon soured. After bitterly demanding a trade to a contending team towards the end of the 1997 season, the pesky Texan was sent to the

Adventure Yankee Fan Memories Baseball Musings Great Games I've Been To... On Being A Baseball Fan December 23 2000 : Think Back to April 23rd... Home runs in the Toronto SkyDome have become increasingly frequent in the "juiced ball" (and/or juiced player) era, with 58 round-trippers hit in just the first 14 games there in 2000. On Easter Sunday, 2000, when the New York Yankees took on their division rivals, the Blue Jays, eight balls would fly into the seats. What no one could have expected was that two men would notch another entry in the record books as a result. The game began with Frank Castillo on the mound for the Jays and Chuck Knoblauch taking some bad hacks to strike out. But Derek Jeter followed with a walk, stole second and then moved to third on a fielder's choice. He needn't have bothered, as Bernie Williams promptly planted one over the wall on Castillo's first pitch of the at bat. 2-0 Yanks. Jose Cruz wasn't going to stand for that. The Blue Jays were on a streak in which they had homered in each of the previous eleven games (Cruz himself 5 of the last 6 games), and had scored at least six runs in each of the ten previous games. Cruz hit a round-tripper in his leadoff at bat. Former Yankee Homer Bush then singled. El Duque struck out Raul Mondesi, but Carlos Delgado worked out a walk. DH Brad Fullmer hit a double to score Bush and moved Delgado to third. Tony Batista hit a ground ball to third to score Delgado, as rookie Alfonso Soriano, playing 3B, went for the sure out at first. El Duque induced another ground ball from Darren Fletcher, but he reached base on Derek Jeter's fielding error. The number eight hitter, Marty Cordova, then flew out to end the inning, but now it was 3-2 Jays.

Answer
Being a Minnesota Twins fan, I have often wondered the same thing. As far as I can tell he is out of pro baseball altogether. You have to wonder if he has turned down minor league deals because I'd think someone would give the guy another shot. I suppose he has a big pile of cash to sit on at home. He was a great player with the Twins but the best contribution he made after 1991 was demanding a trade. We shipped the complainer off to the Yankees and got some great players in return (Guzman, Milton, and Buchanan). Soon after he became fixated on throwing the ball into the box seats on the first baseline whenever a routine grounder was hit to him. edit answer
Answer
He's in his second year of retirement, after refusing a minor league assignment in 2003. Here's an April 2004 article from the NY Times: Current and Ex-Yankee United by a Coach By JACK CURRY BOSTON, April 16 — They have a bond that is loose yet strong. They played baseball for the same high school, a decade apart. They were deeply influenced by the same coach, who was the father of one of them. They both made it to the major leagues and played for the Yankees. One is still here, while the other is not and does not miss it.

By Compiled from Times wires Knoblauch lashes outat the Boss NEW YORK Chuck Knoblauch fired back at Yankees owner George Steinbrenner on Saturday after the Boss once again questioned his second baseman's injured arm. "If I don't have the throwing problem, no one questions if I'm hurt," Knoblauch said in a profanity-laced interview. "I spent 10 years in the majors and never went on the DL. I go on once and everyone questions if I'm hurt. That's a bunch of bull. I'm not hiding from anything. I'm tired of being questioned. What do I have to hide from?" Knoblauch, whose season has been plagued by throwing woes and various arm injuries, has been out since Aug. 3 with tendinitis in his right elbow. "I have no answers about Knoblauch," Steinbrenner said in Saturday's Daily News. "We've had players come down to Tampa all year and had success (getting them healthy or restoring their confidence). With him, we've failed.

Professional Thieves vs. The Constabulary
by Chuck Rosciam SABR, Baseball Research Journal Who are the professional thieves (base stealers) and who are the top cops (catchers)? How do we differentiate professional from amateur? Do arrests by the constabulary (caught stealing by the catcher) measure greatness in a backstop or is it pure ineptness by the thief? An analysis of Retrosheet data from 1963-2004 was performed to answer these and other questions. During the data period there were 174,570 stolen base attempts (SBA) involving 61,131 runner-catcher match-ups. The breakdown of these SBA’s is: Table 1. Stolen Base Attempts By Base SB CS SBA SB% nd Base rd Base Home Total To separate the professional thief from the amateur, all 3,223 runners’ efforts were categorized by their success or failure at each base. Because the success rate at stealing 3 rd or home was lower than the theft rate of 2 nd , the top 1% of the runners who attempted 3 rd or home were selected out and designated as the professional thieves. As expected, the usual suspects (Henderson, Brock, Coleman, Carew, and Raines) made the list of 32. (See Table 8). The success rate for all runners attempting to steal 3 rd base was 71.6%. Of the 32 professional thieves, only four had a worse rate than the MLB average. These
