Contact me: kuff - at - offthekuff.com Main March 19, 2002 RIP, Ray Knoblauch Longtime Bellaire High School baseball coach Ray Knoblauch died in his sleep yesterday. Knoblauch, father of current major league player Chuck Knoblauch, was 71 and had been battling Alzheimer's. The article lists his accomplishments (four time state champion) and his innovations (using video tape in the 1960s), and also gives a clear idea of the positive influence that a coach can have on his players. I think a key lesson for anyone in a position of authority is that if you want to be respected, you won't always be liked. How often is "he wanted to be everyone's friend" given as a defense of someone's failings? Sure, you can go overboard the other way (*cough* *cough* *Bobby Knight* *cough* *cough*), but it's definitely the way to go. I think this is my biggest fear of fatherhood. I don't like being disliked. It's gonna be hard to be the bad cop. Tiffany knows this - I had a hard enough time disciplining the dog. But I have to admit, we're all better off now that Harry knows what his limits are. And by now I've seen enough children of friends, family, and acquaintances to have gotten a healthy dislike of uncontrolled behavior and ineffective parenting, not to mention the fact that Tiffany will kick my ass if need be. So I believe I'll be ready when the time comes. I'd better be, that's for sure. Posted by Charles Kuffner on March 19, 2002 to

Contact me: kuff - at - offthekuff.com Main May 21, 2002 Competitive balance gave his perspective on Bud Selig's latest whining , and wonders what baseball nuts like The Fat Guy and I think. The Fat Guy has his say here , so I guess it's now my turn. First, I generally disagree with TFG when he says "a pox on both houses" , meaning players as well as owners, should the labor talks lead to another strike. People often rant and rave about millionaire baseball players, but no one ever seems to get exercised about multimillionaire owners. It's hard to overstate the dirty, dishonest, and underhanded tricks that the owners have used, especially since Beelzebud Selig first infested the Commissioner's Office, and I can't help but think that anyone rationally looking at this should see it for what it is, namely an attempt by oligopolists to artificially control their costs. The Baseball Prospectus has been all over this, from Joe Sheehan's recent observation that
Baseball salaries have this magic ability to turn raging free-market conservatives into autocrats with the snap of a finger. Frothing Republicans who lusted after Jack Kemp's "enterprise zone" concepts are often appalled that Jason Giambi is able to make $120 million on the same free market that they defend so vigorously in other segments of society. The owners work very hard to keep their financial information quiet, but are quick to publicize how much money the latest free agent is raking in.

Carthage Baseball Photograph Collection Overview Carthage has had a long line of adult baseball teams of either amateur or semipro — the earliest documented team is the Tornado Base Ball Club of 1870. An African-American team is documented in the 1890s and a women's team has been documented in 1910 but by no means has there been an exhaustive study of baseball in Carthage and all these teams could be replaced by others as "first" upon further research. Baseball fields are known to have been developed at Carter Park, Lakeside Park outside of Carthage, Hawthorne School Field and Municipal Park. It is believed the last professional baseball game played at Municipal Park was a game featuring the Indianapolis Clowns and the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro League in 1952. Of all the former ballfields listed, the Municipal Park Stadium built by the Works Progress Administration still stands today off Oak Street (the former route of Highway 66). In the twentieth century, Carthage fielded white-male baseball teams in the Trolley League (1900-10s), Southwestern League (1891), Ozark League (1920s), Western Association (1941), Arkansas-Missouri League (1938), and Kansas-Oklahoma-Missouri League (1946-1951), also known as the KOM League.

By Ted Rose A ngela Lugo spent the first two games of the baseball season in the left-field seats of Yankee Stadium, cheering lustily for her favorite ballplayer, her fingernails painted to read knob 2001. "He looks like a gorilla," she says, "but cute." Chuck Knoblauch's been her guy since 1998, just before his ability to throw to first base evaporated. As Knoblauch worked on his problem, the 21-year-old's devotion only grew. "It showed true dedication," she says. "It's a lot easier to give up." For three seasons, the tri-state area has puzzled over Knoblauch's hang-up. Some called it the yips. Baseball aficionados called it Steve Sax syndrome, after a similarly afflicted Yankee. Manager Joe Torre, who's spent three years holding his breath on every hit up the middle, resolved the problem by sticking Knoblauch in left field, where he's drawn standing ovations for catching routine fly balls.

Playing with Inter-league Play: Cubs vs. White Sox First Base Today : Todd Zeile is playing like Lou Gehrig. At times, Tino Martinez plays like Louise Gehrig. Edge: Muts Tomorrow : Zeile is playing above his head. He is NOT the long-term answer but the Muts will keep him anyway. Martinez will be replaced soon. This is the one position where the Hankees are likely to sign a stud replacement. Edge: Hankees Second Base Today : It's the oldest story out there-young, innocent mid-Westerner moves to The Big Apple in search of fame and fortune and is sucked into the fast life, loses his innocence, and catches a nasty disease. It has happened to former Twin Chuck Knoblauch. If Chuck-E-the-Hankee (the "E" stands for error) could have overcome his greed and not forced the low-budget Twins to trade him, he wouldn't have had to endure the public ridicule that is a symptom of the dreaded "Sax-itis." The most notable symptom of Sax-itis is the sudden inability to throw a ball anywhere near the first baseman. Prior to contacting the disease, Chuck-E was able to perform at a satisfactory level. Unfortunately, since contacting the disease, Chuck-E has been performing at what can only be described as a Sax-factory level-not good. The Muts have one of the N.L.'s best players at second base in Edgardo Alphonso. Alphonso not only plays a solid defense, he hits with more authority than a Mafia henchman. Edge: Muts Tomorrow : Alphonso is going nowhere. The Muts can afford to pay whatever it will cost to keep him into his free-agent years. The Hankees have prospects (most notably Alphonso Soriano) but New York prospects rarely pan out (all hail Shawn Abner and Ruben Rivera).

Two Baseball Writers Discuss the World Series
From: Rob Neyer
To: Rany Jazayerli
Subject: Are the Yankees Lucky?
Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at 10:17 AM PT Rany: There was an inning—the sixth, I think—where I wanted to say to myself, “Geez, here comes the old Yankee luck again.” With Reggie Sanders on second base, two men out, Erubiel Durazo shot a ground ball toward right field, a ground ball that would easily have scored Sanders if it had actually reached right field. It didn’t, though, because Alfonso Soriano launched himself across the grass and snared that ground ball in the furthest regions of his webbing. If Durazo had hit the ball just a smidgeon harder or an iota earlier, the Diamondbacks take a 2-1 lead. Continue Article placeAd(2,'slate.homepage/slate') But he didn’t, so Soriano kept the ball in the field. Durazo was safe at first, but Sanders could get no further than third. That brought up Matt Williams, who scalded a liner into left field. If Chuck Knoblauch had been out there, like he usually is, Williams would have had an RBI single. At least. But Knoblauch wasn’t out there, Shane Spencer was. And Spencer made a diving catch of Williams’ liner, keeping the game tied. Inches, and they all went the Yankees’ way, just like the inches seem to go the Yankees’ way every October.

Nicknamed the "Yankee Clipper" for his superb fielding ability, DiMaggio also was a great offensive player as well. He set a major league record by establishing a 56 game hitting streak in 1941, which helped earn him the nickname "Joltin' Joe". DiMaggio played in 10 World Series, and was the American League's Most Valuable Player in 1939, 1941 and 1947. In 1948, he led the league with 39 home runs and 155 runs batted in.
