Knoblauch's throwing troubles may force him to play left field
By The Associated Press TAMPA, Fla. Chuck Knoblauch walked out of Legends Field on Monday carrying a box of media guides, which he said were for his mother. "Have to scratch off the 2B," he joked. "It's 2B not to be." Knoblauch's career as a second baseman may be over. After watching him make more wild throws this spring, the Yankees said Monday they will experiment switching Knoblauch to left field. The former Gold Glove infielder talked the matter over with New York manager Joe Torre, who said he didn't want Knoblauch to think left field was "the penalty box."

Chuck Knoblauch
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Edward Charles "Chuck" Knoblauch (born July 7 in Houston, Texas ) is an American former Major League Baseball second baseman who played for the Minnesota Twins New York Yankees (1998-2001) and Kansas City Royals He was selected by the Twins in the 1st round (25th pick) of the amateur draft, and the choice paid off when he was named the American League 's Rookie of the Year in after batting .281. He also helped the Twins win their second World Series in five years, hitting .350 in the ALCS and .308 in the Series. From 1994-96 he batted .312, .333, and .341; he won the AL Gold Glove Award at second base in 1997, but was traded to the Yankees months later in exchange for four players and $3 million. In New York, Knoblauch helped the Yankees to become the first team in 26 years to win three consecutive World Series; they won the AL pennant in every season he was with the team, and he hit over .300 in at least one postseason series each year. However, in 1999 he began to make off-target throws when fielding , committing an error as a second baseman on the average of once every six games. Perhaps the biggest of such errors was during the 1998 ALCS when he got into an argument with the first base umpire, letting the ball roll away. This allowed several Indians runners to advance bases, leading to the Indians' victory. Knoblauch's fielding woes continued through 2000, and he was soon relegated to playing

The players are ranked by position, so first basemen are not compared to second basemen, etc. The players are then broken down into Type A, Type B and Type C (and the rest). When a team loses a free agent who is ranked in one of the three categories, they receive compensation as follows (if and only if they offered that player arbitration before he signed with his new team):
  • Type C. Team losing player gets a supplemental pick after the second round.
If a team doesn't offer arbitration to their free agent, they get nothing when he signs with another team. This brings up the next question of why don't the teams always offer arbitration? The answer is, they might simply be afraid he'll accept it. It's a gamble some teams aren't willing to take, even if it seems likely the player is heading out of town. Teams must offer arbitration by Dec. 7.

Baseball Fever General Baseball PDA View Full Version : New Rankings for 2B based on Win Shares cubbieinexile 02-25-2003, 02:51 PM In Bill James' New Historical Abstract he ranks by position based on a formula largely reliant on Win Shares. I disagree with some of his methods, in that he places too much emphasis on Peak Years than he does on overall career. I have changed the formula so that now to get the rankings I use a players top 4 season average plus best 8 consectutive year average as well as Total Win Shares/Total Games*162. Plus I changed the subjective part, taking out the clutch and defensive aspect since I have no way of knowing either of these. Bill's formula was a 3 year average plus 5 year consectutive average plus the Harmonic mean of career winshares divided by ten and 25. I removed the last part. Plus for the age bonus I set the cutoff at 1950. Meaning any player born after 1950 can only get a maximum age bonus of 12.
What follows in the new rankings.
1. Eddie Collins
2. Joe Morgan

Chuck Knoblauch, John Byington, Terry Taylor, Keith Langston, Scott Centata, Jim Newmann, Tony DelaCruz and John Woods were all enrolled in or had taken HORT 201 - going to the game was like going to class. My son and I watched the entire series against t.u. standing on top of 6-foot ladders looking over the left field fence under the scoreboard. That's when Aggie Alley really was "Aggie Alley". "Big John" Byington's game winning home run sailed right over our heads. Gosh, I almost fell off that ladder (and if I hadn't been tangled in the barbed wire, I probably would have). That truly was the year that started " Olsen Magic ". I can still remember the feeling after loosing the Sunday double-header to LSU in the 89 regional. I have never been that emotionally drained and effected by a sporting event in my life. It was a numbness that cannot be explained. That also was the beginning of the LSU baseball dynasty of the 1990s. To this day I just cannot stand purple and gold, even though Louisiana is my home state! (It also helps that I went ot USL in Lafayette and LSU was to me as t.u. is to Aggies).
Yep, that's ole Dave freezing his you know what off at Olsen Field for the opening series of the 2001 season. Some people just don't have enough sense to come in out of the cold. And no, I'm not sleeping. (Bryan College Station Eagle, February 11, 2001)

by Mike Carminati ATM Reports The funny thing is that when Knoblauch came to New York, I was sure that he would someday receiving his plaque in the Hall. He played well at times and won championships with the Yankees, but Knoblauch was never the same type of player as he was in Minnesota. And now I would be surprised if he survives the first year of eligibility on the Hall of Fame ballot. So what happened? Was Knoblauch on a Hall of Fame trajectory but just got diverted along the way or was I out of my mind (or both)? He had one more year in Minnesota, but the team was falling apart. Knoblauch had an off year by his standard (.281 batting average and an Ops only 9% better than average but 62 stolen bases and his only Gold Glove). Knoblauch ended up demanding a trade at the end of 1997 and the major contenders of the day (the Yankees, Braves, and Indians) were all interested. NUMBER 1421. — June 28, 2000 ISSN 0882-3731 There Is an Ethical Unconscious Contempt Causes Insanity
Dear Unknown Friends: We have reached the 5th section of the great 1950 lecture Aesthetic Realism and Nature, A matter in the world of sports that has been affecting people very much is close to the subject of Ms. Driscoll’s article. That matter is the repeated inability of award-winning Yankee second baseman Chuck Knoblauch to make simple throws successfully. The June 17 New York Times quotes a sports psychologist, Rick Wolff, who says such troubles occur when a player starts to think consciously about an action that should be spontaneous. But even if Wolff is correct (I’m not sure he is), he doesn’t know why such a change in thought and feeling happens: "There’s no rhyme or reason," he says. Well, there is a reason for the tumult of an eminent ballplayer, as there is for all people’s. Aesthetic Realism is the means of knowing it, because Eli Siegel is the person of thought who understood the human self. Aesthetic Realism explains that the deepest purpose of everyone is to like the world, to see it with justice. But there is also something tremendous in everyone
