Chuck Knoblauch—a baseball’s worst nightmare
By Neil Buethe
Assistant Editor
Too high, too low, to the right, to the left, behind, to far in front, between the legs, in the dirt, in the dugout and even in the stands. Yes, I’ve been pretty much everywhere. Everywhere, but where I’m supposed to go. Who am I?
I’m Chuck Knoblauch’s baseball. And I’m getting tired of not landing safely inside first baseman Tino Martinez’s glove.
I’m sure you know who Knoblauch is. He’s the Yankee’s starting second baseman, even though he has a minor problem. He can’t throw the ball to first base!
What is wrong with this guy? He’s been playing baseball all of his life and then one day he wakes up and can’t throw me 75 feet? It doesn’t make any sense.
In last year’s postseason, Knob (that’s what me and some other baseballs have nicknamed him) was the Yankee’s designated hitter, probably because Yankee’s manager, Joe Torre, was nervous he might cost them a victory with a wild throw.
This year Knob went to Florida a month before training camp to work on his throwing, but it doesn’t seem to have worked. He’s already committed numerous throwing errors during spring training, even four in just six innings (this past week, Torre finally saw enough and has placed Knob in left field).

Yankees once again to rule AL, Sox should grab Wild Card—will battle Jays, Red Sox.

The consensus throughout baseball over the last decade has been that the pitching is getting worse. ERAs are way up compared to the 1960s and ‘70s, and experts blame expansion for diluting the talent. But could the slide of pitching have more to do with a tiny strike zone and a lowered mound? Part 1 - The Best and Worst Fielders in Baseball (2002 - 2003)
Tangotiger Background If you are new to this project, you should read about it first The Preliminary Results Thank you to all those who participated! I've received almost 500 ballots (and am still accepting them until Opening Day). I thought it would be a little fun to look at some early returns. For this particular article, it will simply be various lists of the best and the worst, as you fans see them. Notes To qualify for these lists, a player had to have at least 5 ballots for a category. 406 of the 499 players on the ballots qualified. The players who received the most number of ballots were Jeter, Bernie Williams, and Soriano, at 58 each. I rejected 1.2% of the ballots (6 in all) for nonsensical selections. In one case, a fan marked all traits for all players as "1", meaning "poor". On Being A Baseball Fan Reviews of Baseball Books On Playing The Game December 18 2001: Chuck Knoblauch's Royal Sendoff When Chuck Knoblauch looks back on his Yankee years, will he see four of the best years of his life? or four of the worst? Only time will tell. During his tempestuous stay with the New York Yankees, the former Rookie of the Year and four time All Star had his share of highs and lows, both on and off the field. He was the spark at the top of the lineup, he and Derek Jeter feeding off each other to ignite rally after rally. He was the transplanted New Yorker, living in Manhattan and riding the subway to and from the Stadium. He was the troubled infielder who couldn't find first base. He was the pesky leadoff man who epitomized the Yankee way of taking pitches, working the count, always prepared to lay down a bunt, or get hit by a pitch.

Greek Tragedy, Plain Tragedy, or Just Plain Old Mistake?
By Lance Linden, March 29, 2001
Now Torre has decided that he also needs to have Chuck Knoblauch be the AL's worst-hitting everyday left fielder (meaning that Dante Bichette can breathe a bit easier if this experiment takes hold). STATS, Inc. projects Knobby, now 32 and unable to get any younger, to hit .289 with an OPS just under .800. That's fine for a second baseman not that anyone wants to see that anymore but unacceptable for a corner outfielder.
So far, the media's attention has been on whether or not Knoblauch can make the transition in the field. They are missing the point: the important issue is not whether Knoblauch can field like a left fielder, but whether he can hit like one. Consider: in 2000, Knoblauch hit .283/.366/.385. Among the 16 AL left fielders who got more-or-less regular playing time last year, that .751 OPS would have ranked 15th, hardly the kind of production that would ordinarily force a manager to alter his outfield defense.
Ah, but maybe, freed from the pressures of second base, Knobby's bat will come out of hibernation and he'll again be the .330-hitting, 50-steal sparkplug he was his last few years in Minnesota. That's a nice thought, but aging players have been moved to less-demanding fielding positions ("rightward along the defensive spectrum" is how SABRWorld likes to put it) for a hundred years, and there is no real evidence that this helps much.

Steve Blass, Cured
By Kirk Robinson, June 1, 2000
What do Thomas Hodgkin (1798-1866), George Gilles de la Tourette (1857-1904), George Whipple (1878-1976), and Steve Blass (1964-present) share in common?
If you guessed that each man listed above lent his name to a rare and terrible disease, take one giant step forward. They provided names for: a deadly form of lymphoma, a debilitating syndrome of misfiring brain impulses, a fatal inability to absorb nutrients from food…and the curious inability to throw a baseball through a strike zone.
These days, every time a ballplayer walks a couple of guys, or heaves one up into the stands, Steve Blass gets his name dragged through the dirt by some wise-acre sports announcer. His name has become a dirty word, a disease for gosh sakes...Steve Blass Disease.
Like any slur, this phrase blots out individuality, blots out detail, and covers up ignorance.

6-4-3: How to Easily Save $160 Million by Gary Huckabay
My wife has a SEP IRA through her employer that's administered by Merrill Lynch. On our coffee table, I noticed one of the inserts from her latest statement lying around - "Merrill Lynch and You". It's in the same family of newsletters that you get with any number of things, like fundraising requests from your alma mater, your monthly bank statement, etc. It's a bunch of feel-good pablum designed to do two things: (1) Make you feel better about the company you have this relationship with, and (2) Wring more of your cash away from you, in one form or another. Normally, this wouldn't have grabbed my attention, but I found the headline to be hilarious, and it fit nicely into the stream of consciousness I was on. The headline read: Stock Ratings to be Based on Projections of Total Return and Risk As you may or may not be aware, Merrill Lynch and other large financial firms have recently come under fire for recent equity recommendations (stock ratings)previously, Strong Buy, Buy, Hold, or rarely, Sell. The headline naturally caused me to commence giggling, with the obvious question of "What the f- were they based on before? Who are these imbeciles?" The cynical answer is, of course, they were based on how much investment banking dough that could be pried, albeit indirectly, from an overly trusting public, and these people aren't imbeciles at all. So what about money spent on players? The model's not dissimilar; clubs invest in players in the form of contracts, either over one year, or over several, based on risk, and the expected return, both in terms of performance and financial benefit - with a heavy overlap between those two areas in most cases. The weird thing is, the bad investments in baseball, particularly long term, end up surfacing again and again, and the parallels to the market are really interesting. Just like I've had the privilege of owning NBC Internet stock, the Colorado Rockies currently own the contracts of
