Baseball... Then and Now
#9, February 21, 2005
News Item: February 28, 1981 – Dave Kingman, coming off a season where he had a .522 slugging percentage, is traded by the Chicago Cubs to the New York Mets for Steve Henderson, who was coming off a season where he had a .402 slugging percentage.
Alright, ortspay ansfay, it’s time for... compare the Pariahs... G AB R H HR RBI SB W K BA OBA SLG OPS Player A Player B There's a certain similarity here... both are relatively low-average home run hitters who struck out a lot (I mean, a lot) and who didn't have particularly good plate discipline in careers that were pretty much the same length. Given just their home run totals, it would seem that they will at least be mentioned in discussions regarding the Hall of Fame at some point. Having said that, it would also seem that Player B was more productive than Player A, scoring a lot more runs (thanks to more doubles, more steals and a much higher on base average) and driving in more runs. Some other numbers that are not easily read from these two career records, but that help accentuate their similarities...

    Baseball America

    National Correspondent
David Rawnsley. Prior to elevating Baseball America's Player Development pages to unparalleled levels of insight, David Rawnsley was the Assistant Scouting Director for the Houston Astros. In addition to his masterworks available in the print version of Baseball America , a chronicle of Mr. Rawnsley's continuing and boundless baseball pilgrimage can be found (free!) on-line at Baseball America Online ( www.baseballamerica.com NetShrine recommends both the hard copy and on-line versions of Baseball America - without reservation. So, what are you waiting for? Get Baseball America and read David Rawnsley! Oh, but first, check out our interview............ When you were young, who was your favorite big league player?
David Rawnsley: Johnny Bench. Which baseball movie do you enjoy best?
David Rawnsley: Field Of Dreams. What's the weirdest thing your ever saw on a ball field in the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Panama or Venezuela?
David Rawnsley: I was watching a Dominican summer league game and saw two players tagged out at home on the same play on a ball hit off the centerfield wall. The guy on second hesitated to see if the ball would be caught, the runner on first didn't hesitate. Call it a bang-bang-bang play at the plate.

NetShrine Discussion Forum NDF Archives NDF's 2nd Year - 2002 2002 Baseball History Archives ... PDA View Full Version : Dave Kingman's Place In Baseball History Fuzzy Bear 02-13-2002, 06:26 PM Two simple questions for discussion:
    1. Should Dave Kingman, and his 442 lifetime HRs, be a Hall-of-Famer?
    2. If not, would he be deserving of the Hall if he held on for three more seasons, and hit 500 career HRs? (Let's say he had average Kingman seasons.) Xanadu Dragon 02-13-2002, 07:55 PM No and No.
400 or 500 - - doesn't hide the lifetime .780 OPS (# 158 all-time for thise with 7400+PA, near Wally Moses and Dusty Baker) and the fact he could not field a lick. 02-13-2002, 07:59 PM Just say 'NO' to Kingman Duque 02-13-2002, 08:54 PM Kingman will probably end up going down as the archetype of the "all or nothing" hitter, who either homered or K'd, and played terrible defense. Among his successors are Rob Deer, Jose Canseco, and Danny Tartabull. Tony Batista is the latest heir to that title. Baudib 02-13-2002, 09:37 PM Not only would I not put Kingman in with 500 homers, I would not put Canseco or Baines in if they were to hang around long enough to get 500 homers.
