Many wonder where in Alaska you can play ball, and why anyone would want to go there and play when there are so many good leagues closer to home. Kingman attended the University of Southern California during the spring and negotiated with the California Angels and the Baltimore Orioles. THE "SOMETHING special" that lured Kingman from the West Coast was a team called the Pan Alaska Goldpanners. In 1960 the team was formed under the sponsorship of Pan Alaska, Inc., a Fairbanks sporting goods store owned and operated by H, A. (Red) Boucher and his wife. Boucher was a new citizen of Fairbanks when he founded the Goldpanners. A 20-year Navy veteran, Boucher has used basebell for many years to build the character of his charges. The 1969 season will be Boucher's 24th as a manager. Besides being a top man for Alaska's Interior Airways, he has served since 1966 as mayor of the city of Fairbanks.

The ball flies out of here if you hit it, but the lights are bad in here so the ball looks fuzzy. It's hard to make contact. Nolan (Ryan) pitching in the Kingdome should be almost invisible." - Fred Lynn O nce again, the All-Star Game headed indoors at the Kingdome for a close game that belonged to anybody as six times in nine innings the lead was tied or lossed. T he American League was leading 6-5 going into the eighth when the National League tied it on a Lee Mazzilli home run. Brian Downing led off the bottom of the inning with a single against Bruce Sutter. A sacrifice moved Downing along and Reggie Jackson was walked intentionally. One out later, Graig Nettles singled to right and, with Downing trying to score, Dave Parker rifled the ball to catcher Gary Carter. Carter forced Downing to the inside of the plate and applied the inning-ending tag as Downing made a head-first dive. P ete Rose played the last four innings at first base and set a record as the only player ever to play five different positions in the All-Star competition. During his appearances he had played first base, second base, third base, right field and left field.

DAVE KINGMAN
Dave Kingman hit home runs and he hit them far. He also struck out a ton, posted poor batting averages, and battled with the front office and media most of his career. The hulking, long-haired slugger spent time with seven teams and was known as a difficult teammate. Kingman, a shy man by nature, never liked the spotlight and just wanted to be left alone, though many of his problems were of his own making, such as the time he sent a rat to a female reporter. His 442 career homers are the most by any player eligible for the Hall of Fame but not yet in.

BILL BUCKNER
Destined to be remembered as the goat of the 1986 World Series, Bill Buckner deserves a better fate. He collected more hits in his career than all but roughly 50 players in baseball history, he won a batting title, and he played in four decades. Overlooking the fact that his infamous miscue occurred when Game Six of the 1986 Fall Classic was tied, fans somehow ignored the several other mishaps that befell the Red Sox earlier in the inning. Buckner retired less than four years later, bitter that his legacy was forever tarnished.
