Many of those players are the core of what is now is a contending team. Jacque Jones has been an intergral part of that. The outfielder adjusted to the big league life quickly, hitting .289 and making an array of highlight reel catches. Jones provided a spark that gave new life to the stagnant atmosphere surrounding Twins baseball. I caught up with Jacque Jones after an autograph signing for the Twin Cities Sports Card Collectors Club. Jones, who was rumored to clash with former manager Tom Kelly, is clearly more comfortable playing under rookie skipper Ron Gardenhire, "The team is a reflection of it's manager," he explained. "If you see your manager having a good time and being loose and wanting you to be loose, then the team is going to be loose. If the manager is not that way, not outgoing like Gardy (Gardenhire) is, then you are going to play like that."

Actually, he might not be smiling, but he always looks like he is smiling. To explain, I am going to force you to remember Bubba in Forrest Gump . Bubba always had his gums sticking out; likewise, Jacque always has his mouth in a smiling position. Whether he's running, hitting or fielding, Jacque always is smiling. A House committee last night gave its blessing to the proposed deal for a new Twins stadium. And Jacque Jones hit a solo, 10th-inning homer in Baltimore last evening to propel the local nine to a victory over the first-place Baltimore Orioles. Those two events are linked by the cosmic forces that is Minnesota politics and the Major League Baseball economy. Regardless of what you think about the financing of a new stadium, never forget this: the point of it is for you to drop more cash at a Twins game. The tickets will cost more, the concessions will cost more, and there'll be more non-game entertainment for you to spend money on, 'lest the little critters accompanying you learn the fine sport of baseball and actually sit in their seats for the whole game absorbing the wonderful strategy and grace of it all. That's all summed up in the purpose of a stadium: to be more "competitive." In other words, to make more money to spend, presumably, on keeping good ballplayers in flyover country.
