Worth a look, Baseball-almanac presents: Record Books, Famous Firsts and Feats Top 10 Lists The Guru's top ten single season records by category for Batting and Pitching (SCROLL DOWN FOR TOP 10 LISTS!!) Batting Notes: Rankings were based on seasons from 1893 to 1998 and more than 400 plate appearances (ab+bb+hpb) were required. Percents for AVG and SLG were based on at bats. Percents for 2B, 3B, HR, SO and BB were based on plate appearances. SB% was based on SB attempts and more than 25 SB's were required to qualify. OPS was based on AVG+SLG. Runs Created was based on Bill James' formula as follows: =(([h]+[bb]+[hpb]-[cs])*([h]+[2b]+2*[3b]+3*[hr]) +.26*([bb]-[ibb]+[hpb])+.52*([sh]+[sf]+sb])) /([ab]+[bb]+[hpb]+[sh]+[sf]) The purpose of his formula was to create the ultimate statistic characterizing the total offense production of a player. However, it favors players with more games played, so for example, George Brett's .390 batting avg season ranks as his 2nd most productive even though it was easily his most productive per plate appearance. So, I calculated OPS too for comparative purposes.

Walter Johnson Park
The Red Ravens play all home games at Walter Johnson Field located in Walter Johnson Park, 715 Park Ave., Coffeyville, Kansas. Construction of the field began in the summer of 1998 and was completed in the spring of 1999 with the installation of tournament lighting and grandstand seating. The City of Coffeyville contracted with Phil Pennington to build the field and Red Raven baseball teams provided much of the labor, including laying nearly 100,000 square feet of sod. Locker room facilities were added to the Walter Johnson complex during the spring 2003 season. Amenities include 40 individual lockers, dressing areas and showers.
The park is named after Hall of Fame pitcher Walter Perry Johnson who lived in Coffeyville, Kansas for several years. Born Nov. 6, 1887 in Humboldt, Kansas, the right-hander played for the Washington Senators for 21-years. Nicknamed "Big Train", Johnson's fastball was considered one of the best of all times. Walter Johnson died on Dec. 10, 1946 in Washington, DC. Driving Directions: From intersection of 8th Street and Highway 169, turn east at flashing caution light and follow 8th Street to Park Avenue. Walter Johnson Park is located on the far east side of Coffeyville near the fairgrounds.

All America Teams
Count appearances on Deadball Era all-star teams . Several summary counts supplement this introduction and annual listing. Baseball Magazine began publication as a monthly in May 1908. Soon after the baseball season ended, the November issue (vol. 2, no. 1) included a one-page article, "All-Star League Teams" (1908) . That seminal article listed "All-American League", "All-National League", and "All America" teams under the line, "Following are the All-Star team selections of The Baseball Magazine Every year 1908 to 1950, BBMag selected the two league teams and one "All America" team. The selections were unattributed 1908-10, then attributed to F.C. Lane, 1911-37, and Dan Daniels, 1938-50. Here the annual AL and NL teams are listed explicitly and the annual "All America" team is identified by bold face in the league listings. For 1913 only, there is a second team from each league. Every team comprises one player each at positions 1B, 2B, SS, and 3B, and three Outfielders; that is, seven players for seven regular positions. The 1908-1911 teams name one man at outfield positions LF, CF, and RF, but the man did not generally play the position. Beginning in 1912, every team simply names three outfielders. Here, the men who regularly played centerfield are marked "[cf]". The "battery" of pitchers and catchers is variable: 1908 2 catchers, 5 pitchers 1909 3 catchers, 5 pitchers 1910 2 catchers, 5 pitchers (3 pitchers on each league team) 1911 4 catchers, 6 pitchers (4-5 pitchers on the league teams) 1912 2 catchers, 3 pitchers 1913 1 catcher, 2 pitchers (same on the league second teams) 1914 2 catchers, 3 pitchers 1915-19 1 catcher, 2 pitchers

http://www.travel-watch.com/remtrain.htm
More Articles Home Remembering the "Big Train" Walter Johnson" by Harvey Frommer A traveling salesman watched in awe as a big right-handed pitcher struck out batter after batter on an Idaho sandlot. The salesman, a loyal fan of the Washington Senators, contacted manager Joe Cantillon and raved. Cantillon dispatched his injured catcher Cliff Blakenship to see the pitcher. "Take along your bat, Cliff," said the Washington skipper. "And if you can get a loud foul off him, leave him where he is," joked Cantillon to his light-hitting backstop. A few days later Cantillon received a telegram. "You can't hit what you can't see. I've signed him and he is on his way," Blankenship wrote. His name was Walter Perry Johnson and this Saturday (November 6) marks the 112th anniversary of his birth. He joined the Washington Senators in 1907 and remained with the team known as "first in war, first in peace, and last in the American League" until 1927. Literally carrying the Washington team year after year, Johnson was selected 14 times to pitch the Senator season opener. Seven times he pitched Opening Day shutouts - a major league record. His nickname, "The Big Train," came from the fact that he seemed to always be moving his team down the track. Another reason for the nickname was his almost mechanical, precision harnessing durability and power on a 6-foot-1, 200-pound frame.

He's got a gun concealed about his person. You can't tell me he throws them balls with his arm. Ring Lardner on Walter Johnson On December 10, 1946, baseball great Walter Johnson died at the age of fifty-nine. Nicknamed "The Big Train," Johnson pitched his way to fame during twenty-one seasons with the Washington Senators. His fastball is considered to be among the best in baseball history. Johnson joined the Senators in 1907 on the condition that the team pay his way home to Kansas if he failed in the big leagues. After a tentative first season, the former high school star found his ground eventually scoring more shutout victories (110) than any other major league pitcher. Johnson's 1913 record for pitching fifty-six consecutive scoreless innings stood for over fifty years until Don Drysdale bested it in 1968. His strikeout record (3,508) held until 1983. In all-time wins, Johnson is second only to Cy Young Honored in 1913 and in 1924 as the American League's Most Valuable Player, Johnson retired from play in 1927. Two years later, he took over as manager of the Senators, a position he held until 1932. In 1936, Johnson was elected to the

The baseball career of Walter Johnson
Walter Johnson won more games than any pitcher in the 20th century and was one of the first five players elected to the Hall of Fame in 1936.
Walter “The Big Train” Johnson (1887 - 1946) was an amazing pitcher, not just because of the numbers that he put up during his 21-year career with the Washington Senators, but because he put up those numbers on Senator teams that were very rarely any good. Despite winning 25 games twice in his first five seasons with the Senators, the team finished in last place or second-last place every one of those years. The team finally rallied around him in 1912 when they finished in second place, thanks in large part to Johnson’s 32 wins, 1.39 ERA, and 303 strikeouts. And just when people thought he couldn’t get any better, Johnson posted 36 wins and a 1.09 ERA the following season - but it was another second place finish for Washington. Unfortunately, it would be eleven more years until Washington made any noise again. In 1924, with the long-overdue support of teammates, Johnson lead the Senators to their first pennant ever by leading the American League in four major categories that season: wins, winning percentage, ERA, and strikeouts. The Senators captured the World Series championship that season, thanks to Johnson’s game seven relief win.
