MLB Greatest Players THE 50 GREATEST MLB PLAYERS Walter Johnson Famed writer Ring Lardner wrote of Johnson, “He’s got a gun concealed about his person. They can’t tell me he throws them balls with his arm.” He was known as the "Big Train” and in later years, upon seeing Bob Feller throw his hard one, Johnson admitted that he had thrown harder in his day. Johnson won at least 30 games twice, at least 25 games seven times (in succesion from 1910-1916), a minimum of 20 games twelve times, and at least 15 games sixteen times. He won the pitching Triple Crown (wins, ERA, and strikeouts) in 1913, 1918, and 1924, earning MVP honors twice. He paced American League pitchers in strikeouts twelve times and led the majors seven times (only Bob Feller and Nolan Ryan can match that feat). He retired owning the career record in whiffs. However, why does the youth bat have a 2 1/4" barrel, an adult is 2 5/8", yet the senior league (the medium size-to-weight ratio bat) is even bigger at 2 3/4". Albert Belle Hitting the Baseball "It is a haunted game in which every player is measured against the ghosts of all who have gone before." - Ken Burns Baseball is the national sport in the United States, but it has a significant international constituent, as well. Besuboru has thrived for about a century in Japan, and the homu ran is as much a part of their national culture as sumo wrestling, kabuki, and sushi. Baseball is definitely the national sport of Cuba [ http://www.cubasports.com/english/nacional.asp and http://www.cubasports.com/english/beisbol.asp ], and is thoroughly entrenched in the Caribbean basin [ http://www.dominicanrepublic.com/thecountry/baseball.html ], and quite popular in the Pacific Rim, as well [ http://japanesebaseball.com/index.jsp The baseball, bat, and glove are still composed of natural materials that reflect an obsolete technology, to maintain the myth that the game is the same as that played over a hundred years ago. However, baseball has continuously been altered (indirectly and sometimes directly) by the advance of technology. Here are some significant milestones in the history of baseball:

Walter "Big Train" Johnson
A Kansas Portrait
One of the first inductees into baseball's Hall of Fame was native Kansan Walter Johnson. Born on an Allen County farm in 1887, Johnson was one of the game's foremost pitchers despite playing on the game's perennially poorest team. Johnson won 416 games, second most in history, on teams of the Washington Senators that were simply awful. He may have been America's foremost sports figure identified with losing teams. He did pitch the woeful Senators to a World Series title in 1924 and throughout his career threw 110 shutouts, the most in history and struck out a then record 3,508 batters mostly with a blazing fastball that became his trademark. He delivered the fastball with the speed of a locomotive, hence the name "Big Train Johnson." His control was phenomenal, most thought because he lived in daily fear of injuring another player with his awesome speed. He always came back to Kansas during his baseball years, and he and his wife lived on a working farm near Coffeyville until her death in 1930. At the time of Johnson's death in 1946, New York City sports columnist (Henry) Grantland Rice wrote: "Baseball may have produced a greater pitcher than Walter Johnson, but I doubt it. One of the all time greats has had the game called by darkness. His successor has yet to show against the horizon."
