WALTER JOHNSON
Considered by many to be the greatest right-hander in baseball history, Johnson was the hardest thrower of his time. He was a phenomenally successful pitcher on often terrible Washington Senators' teams. As a veteran, he anchored the only Senators' World Series winning club, in 1924. He and Christy Mathewson were the first pitchers inducted into the Hall of Fame.

RANDY JOHNSON
Like Sandy Koufax, Johnson battled control problems early in his career before finally developing into the most dominant pitcher in the game. But unlike Koufax, Johnson's arm shows no signs of stoppage, having earned four straight Cy Young Awards through 2002. In the 2001 World Series, Johnson became the first pitcher in 35 years to win three games in the Fall Classic, as he led the D'Backs to a championship in just their fourth season.
Johnson is the tallest man (6'10") to ever play in the major leagues, and the combination of his height and tremendous fastball intimidate opposing batters. In 1990 he threw the first no-hitter in Mariners' history, and in 1997 he became that teams' first 20-game winner. After nearly a decade in Seattle, he was traded to the Houston Astros before the July 1998 trade deadline, as the Mariners made the decision not to pursue him as a free agent at the end of the season. After a 10-1, 1.28 ERA performance for Houston that helped them to the post-season, Johnson signed with Arizona as a free agent in the 1998 off-season.

Career Pitching Record Other Resources Johnson joined the AL's Washington Senators in 1907 directly out of semi-pro baseball without ever playing in the minor leagues. he 6-foot-1, 200-pound, right-handed pitcher soon won the nickname "Big Train" from sportswriter Grantland Rice because of the speed of his fastball. His teammates often called him "Barney" after auto racer Barney Oldfield because of the way Johnson drove a car. In 1908, Johnson set a record by pitching shutouts in three consecutive games against the New York Yankees, on September 4, 5, and 7. (There was no game on September 6.) But he had the misfortune of pitching for poor teams through most of his career; his record was only 14-14 that yer, despite 6 shutouts, and in 1909 he slipped to 13-25, although he had a 2.21 ERA. From 1910 through 1919, Johnson won 20 or more games each year. He led the league in strikeouts for the first time with 313 in 1910, led in shutouts with 6 in 1911, 11 in 1913, 9 in 1914, and 7 in 1915, and was the ERA leader at 1.39 in 1912, 1.14 in 1913, 1.27 in 1918, and 1.49 in 1919. Johnson topped the AL in strikeouts 8 consecutive years, from 1912 through 1919. He was the league leader in victories and winning percentage with a 36-7 record and an .837 percentage in 1913, when he won the most valuable player award. The Senators finished second that season with 90 victories. However, from 1910 through 1910, they averaged only 76 wins a year and Johnson averaged 26.

Walter Johnson on a 1909-1911 American Tobacco Company baseball card (White Borders (T206)). Walter Perry Johnson November 6 December 10 American professional baseball pitcher . Born in Humboldt, Kansas , he was a farm boy who grew up to become one of Major League Baseball 's greatest stars. He was the second of six children and his family moved to Orange County, California in 1901, where he attended Fullerton High School. After pitching in the Idaho State League, Johnson signed a contract with the Washington Senators in July 1907. Johnson won renown as the premier power pitcher of his era. Although a lack of precision instruments prevented accurate measurement of his fastball, Johnson is believed to have thrown as high as 99 miles per hour from a sidearm angle. This power is exceptional even today, but it was virtually unique in Johnson's day. The overpowering fastball is the primary reason for Johnson's exceptional statistics, especially his strikeout totals. Nicknamed Big Train , as a right-handed pitcher for the Washington Senators (now the Twins) , he won 417 games, the second most by any pitcher in history (after Cy Young , who won 511). He and Young are the only pitchers to have won 400 games or more. In a twenty-one year career he had two seasons in which he had more than thirty wins (33 in

Sometimes, it's hard to distinguish between the two when looking at the career of one of the greatest players in the game. Clyde "Zeb" Milan felt horrible.
After 10 scoreless innings, the Washington Senators' outfielder let a ball by Boston Red Sox hitter Steve Yerkes go through his legs, costing his team the game.
The error also ruined a masterful performance by Senators pitcher Walter Johnson, who'd allowed only one hit and retired 26 straight batters before Milan's error. The loss ended Johnson's 14-game winning streak, killing his chance to beat his own 16-game record.
Johnson (1889-1946) was broken up himself; later accounts tell of him shedding tears over the dramatic loss. A teammate came over to console Johnson after the loss, blaming the error for his cruel fate. Johnson immediately rushed to Milan's defense. "Well, you know Zeb doesn't do that very often," he said.

Walter 'The Big Train' Johnson.
Hailing from tiny Weiser, Idaho, 19-year-old Walter Johnson was signed by the Washington Senators to shore up their considerable pitching woes. Johnson played his entire career with the Washington Senators. From 1907 through 1927, he won 416 games with 110 of them by shutout, struck out over 3,500 batters, and led his usually weak hitting team to a World Championship in 1924. After his retirement as a player, Johnson managed the Senators for two years and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936. The Sporting News and others voted 'The Big Train' amongst the top athletes in the 20th century.
