Reggie! Reggie! Reggie! In my last GameSpotting article, I listed Reggie Jackson Baseball for the Sega Master System among my all-time favorite sports games. Surprisingly, I received nearly a dozen e-mails from our readers about the game. Some of you reminisced about your personal experiences with the game, while others went as far as disparaging my general taste in games and went on to call Reggie Jackson Baseball a variety of mocking and hurtful nameseverything from an unbalanced product to a complete and utter waste of time and energy. So now I feel the need to impart you with some knowledge about the blessings of Reggie Jackson Baseball. And believe me, there are quite a few.
Time it took the developers to create the title screen in Photoshop: 6 minutes For starters, the throwing and fielding controls were lightning quick. When the ball was hit into play, the game switched into an overhead perspective, which scaled to show both the infield and outfield players. Each of the players on the field had varying defensive skill levelssome had strong arms, while others were light on their feet. It was one of the first baseball games where controlling the fielders and, in particular, turning double plays were a lot of fun. The pitcher-batter interface in the game was pretty intuitive, as the camera was positioned way back, in a three-quarter perspective, and showed the back of the catcher, the batter, and the pitcher's mound. This interface also showed the pitcher's ERA and batter's average and had little window inserts to show the runners on base. All of this looked very realistic, for its time. Considering the game was released in 1988 on the 8-bit Master System, it looked quite good.

An interesting account of a truly great baseball year from a great writer's perspective Cons At times too much sidetracking and rhetoric The Bottom Line A good book for any baseball fan, which might not deliver what hardcore Yankees or Red Sox zealots expect Full Review In the history of baseball, there are a few teams that stand out. The 1978 Yankees are one of those teams, not because they were a morally exemplary bunch, but because they withstood turmoil, strife, instability and infighting to overtake a strong Boston Red Sox team and move on to become the World Series Champion. To inject a personal note, as a lifelong Red Sox fan, I can attest that any true Boston believer takes the 1978 season harder than anything, including the infamous ground ball between Bill Buckner's legs in 1986. In 1978, the Soxa team adorned with future all of fame members Carl Yastrzemski and Carlton Fisk, as well as all-stars Jim Rice, Fred Lynn, Rick Burleson, Bob Stanley, Dennis Eckerlsey and moreblew a seemingly sure lead, and fought back furiouslyonly to lose a one-game playoff by a razor thin margin, having their best player, Yastrzemski, pop up in the bottom of the ninth with the tying run at third. Baseball just doesn't get any closer than that, folks.

Executive summary: Baseball player or candy bar Reggie Jackson's parents divorced when he was six, and Jackson was raised by his father, who had played for the Negro Leagues' Newark Eagles. At Arizona State University, the younger Jackson played baseball and football. He was drafted by the Kansas City Athletics in 1966, and made his major league debut with the A's the next summer. After the A's moved to Oakland, Jackson bloomed into a home run hitting star through the 1970s and '80s, and also played for the New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles, and California (now Anaheim) Angels. He remains among baseball's all-time home run leaders, but when he was not hitting home runs, Jackson struck out more than anyone else, ever 2,597 times in 11,416 plate appearances (a .227 strikeout average). Only once did he bat .300 in a season, and actually it was .2996, in 1980 but Jackson's game almost always improved in the post-season. In his five World Series, Jackson's batting average ballooned to .357, and he won the World Series Most Valuable Player Award twice. In the final game of the 1977 Series, Jackson hit three home runs off three difference pitchers, and each blast came on the first pitch. His clutch playoff performances earned him the nickname, "Mr. October."
