The 1919 world series was the Chicago White Sox against the Cincinnati Reds. Some gamblers paid some of the players on the white sox to lose on purpose. One of those men was "Shoeless" Joe Jackson. Some of the other men said Jackson was in before confirming it with Jackson himself. Jackson tried to refuse the money twice. He tried to report it to the owner of the white sox, Charles Comiskey. He didn't do anything. He even tried to sit out the series, but he was forced to play. He played one of his best games ever and was innocent, but he and his companions were banned from any thing to do with baseball for the rest of his life. He had the third best batting average of all time, but after the scandal no one wanted him to be in the hall of fame. Baseball was his love. It would make him so happy to be in the hall of fame.

for Shoeless Joe By SAM BORDEN
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER The Chicago Whitesox' Shoeless Joe Jackson (r.) takes a look at one of Babe Ruth's bats in 1920. Pete Rose is the talk of the baseball world this week, but what about Joe? Shoeless Joe Jackson, who is the most famous baseball exile next to Rose, was banished for life in 1921 for his alleged involvement in the Black Sox scandal of 1919. Jackson died in 1951, but many supporters - including the late Ted Williams and several politicians - have joined his family in trying to clear his name. When reached at his home in South Carolina last night, Lester Erwin, a second cousin to Jackson, told the Daily News that he feels Rose should be reinstated, just as his cousin should. "Personally, I think Pete Rose ought to be in the Hall of Fame for what he did on the field," Erwin said. "He should be allowed to be among the greats of the game. If they reinstate Pete, it's definitely a plus for us. We're going to be knocking on their door, for sure." Erwin acknowledged that Rose's case is related to Jackson's, saying "both got a raw deal," but pointed out that Jackson was never found guilty. Conspiracy charges against the eight ballplayers were dismissed by a Chicago court after their signed confessions disappeared from the courthouse.

One night in Texas, the silence was broken by a loudspeaker-amplified midwestern voice, sounding very like a cola spokesperson, saying, "If you print it, they will buy." Soon the University press brought out a handsome edition of W. P. Kinsella's collection of stories that led eventually to the movie Field of Dreams. The collection came out in Canada in 1980, but the popular and critical success of the 1989 feel-good movie created a receptive climate for Kinsella's collection, upon the title story of which his prize-winning novel, Shoeless Joe (1982), was based. The title story, while overrated, may tell us something about the relation between "serious literature" and pop culture, and eventually about a culture in search of sentimental soothing.

Excerpt
Almost every work that is neither fiction nor an account based on personal experience relies in part on secondary sources... or primary sources.... A direct quotation from any of these must be identified in a footnote.... Ideas and interpretations attributed to, or facts discovered by, another writer should also be documented. A Manual of Style (University of Chicago Press) Joe Jackson, one of the most talented baseball players ever, has figured more prominently in newspaper and magazine articles, books, and movies than most great ballplayers. Sadly for his reputation, the interest in Jackson is due less to his achievements as a hitter and fielder than to his alleged participation in the so-called Black Sox scandal, a scheme to throw the 1919 World Series. These views of Jackson are reflected in two kinds of narratives that offer histories of the man and...

Scene Analysis
Playing Ball with Shoeless Joe Jackson
by
Janine Stavrovsky

In the movie Field of Dreams
In this scene, it has been months since Ray has built his baseball field, and his family has been anxiously waiting for "something" to happen. One evening while Ray and his wife Annie are discussing their finances, their daughter Karin realizes that somebody is standing on the field. Ray takes a look to see who it is and decides to go out to the field. Before he goes, he turns on the powerful lights to illuminate the baseball field.
When Ray first meets Shoeless Joe Jackson, dialogue does not initially occur; instead, it is replaced with baseball. As Ray walks onto the field, Shoeless Joe waits in the outfield, and instantly Ray knows to hit a few balls to the legend. Ray believes that he built this field for Shoeless Joe Jackson, so he imagines that the only thing Shoeless Joe would want to do is play baseball.
This scene is the very essence of what baseball is like to many people. Shoeless Joe perfectly describes one of the first things a person can notice about a ballpark: the smell and the touch of the grass. Almost anyone who has been to a baseball game can relate to these sensations. It is not only the baseball players who have these feelings but also the spectators themselves. In this scene there are two people who do not know each other personally and have had very different experiences in terms of their relationship with the game of baseball, but both can find a common ground when they speak of it.

Main July 29, 2005 Joe and Pete Sean Peter Kirst offers a solution to Joe Jackson and Pete Rose not being in the Hall of Fame . I could live with that, although I have my doubts about it remaining a quiet spot. Posted by David Pinto at 10:30 AM All-Time Greats TrackBack (0) Comments I was in Las Vegas last weekend and I was strolling through the mall in Caesar's Palace a cavernous, gaudy place, as ugly as can be. And off to the side, outside a sports memorabilia shop, sitting at a fold-out table, was the hit king himself, Mr. Pete Rose. He was ostensibly signing autographs but no one seriously, no one was in line. I actually felt something like sympathy for the guy. Posted by: Brian Gunn at July 29, 2005 12:28 PM He's hawked so much merchandise that I'd be surprised that anyone who wanted his signature didn't have it already.
He broke the cardinal rule of baseball. No sympathy for him from me. Posted by: rbj at July 29, 2005 01:15 PM Apparently, Pete has moved up the street in Las Vegas. I had gone there in April and stayed at the Monte Carlo, and across the street, by the Coca-Cola store, was to my surprise, Pete Rose. And again, nobody wanting his autograph. What a sad state for this guy. Posted by: Dan Reinholtz at July 29, 2005 01:56 PM
