1919 World Series Black Sox Scandal The game of baseball is a clean, straight game. William Howard Taft Ooh. Not so quick, Mr. Taft, for even the national pastime has its blemish: the 1919 World Series between the Chicago White Sox and the Cincinnati Reds. It appeared, at first, to be like any other World Series: two highly competitive teams playing their hardest to see who would be crowned champions of baseball, and who would simply go home. In this expanded series, the Reds seemed to barely survive to win 5 games to 3. But they had some help. Yes, the 1919 World Series was the one fixed by the infamous Black Sox scandal. "What" You may ask. " FIX the World Series How is that possible?" Here's the story. Background Information Baseball wasn't so much invented as it was developed. Brought over from England in the form of such games as "stoolball" or criquet, individuals like Abner Doubleday soon developed the rules and concept of the game "baseball" in the mid 1800s. The first professional team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, was fielded in 1869, and other semi-pro teams soon followed in their footsteps. Traveling around the country and playing in public parks spread knowledge and popularity of the game until teams could actually start charging people to attend. Baseball's popularity kept increasing, and, by the turn of the century, it was a legitimate business with two major leagues and numerous minor and semi-pro leagues with teams all over the nation.

  • Out of Bounds Shoeless Joe, Hall of Famer A pair of South Carolina lawmakers say the "Black Sox" star's lifetime ban from baseball should be lifted. They're right. By Gary Kaufman Sen. Strom Thurmond and Rep. Jim DeMint, both of South Carolina, met with baseball commissioner Bud Selig Wednesday to argue that Shoeless Joe Jackson's lifetime ban should be lifted. Jackson's lifetime actually ended in 1951, so lifting the ban would have little effect on him, but it would make him eligible to be enshrined in the Hall of Fame. Jackson, a South Carolinian who played briefly for the Philadelphia A's before starring for the Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox from 1911 to 1920, had a lifetime batting average of .356, behind only Ty Cobb and Rogers Hornsby. He led the Sox to the world championship in 1917 and the American League pennant in 1919. A young Babe Ruth studied his swing.

No surprise what this book is about. Shoeless Joe Jackson is a legend of mythical proportions. Called by many including Cobb, Williams and Ruth the greatest natural hitter of all time, Jackson was thrown out of baseball as one of the Chicago Black Sox involved in the 1919 World Series fix.
It was also important to understand the role of gamblers and gambling in and on Major League baseball. Baseball at that time was rife with corruption and many games were thrown. Even many players now enshrined in Cooperstown were involved. Some of them were caught with incontrovertible evidence, yet very few were really punished (In fact in Major League history only 36 men have been banished from the game, 28 for gambling).
The eight White Sox who were involved and later called Black Sox were uneducated men who were manipulated into testifying. There was little, if any, legal basis for their expulsion from the game. In a modern courtroom, the case would never have been heard. Even then, in a crooked and corrupt Chicago where influence peddling was common, the ballplayers were not convicted of wrongdoing. Nor were any of the gamblers who arranged the fix.

Alternative history by its very nature is completely speculative. But since others have estimated Jackson's career batting totals had he not been banned, I thought it might be interesting to take a closer look. Although Jackson was already 31 by 1920, that year saw the beginning of the lively ball era and the rise of batting averages throughout baseball. Thus, it is not obvious how his lifetime batting average of .356 would have been affected had he remained active. Joe Jackson was born in 1889 according to Total Baseball. I found eight other players born between 1888 and 1890 who had at least 1200 at bats and a .300 average through 1920. Two, Benny Kauff, who himself was banned, and Vin Campbell, a Federal Leaguer who was unable to get back into the majors after the FL folded, never played after 1920. About the Ball Park This is a photo of the brick gateway that leads ...to the restrooms? A strange place to put the plaque, I thought. A better photo is on the way. The plate has the following message: Joseph Jefferson Wofford Jackson As a thirteen year old. Joe Jackson earned a position on the Brandon Mill Team. He possessed a talent so uncommon that legends grew from his deeds. His home runs were known as "Saturday Specials", his line drives "blue darters". His glove "a place where triples die". Shoeless Joe was the greatest natural hitter ever to grace the diamond, and was such an inspiration that Babe Ruth chose to copy his swing. He was banished from baseball for his complicity in the 1919 Black Socks scandal, yet his memory still moves across the conscience of America. Shoeless Joe Jackson never had to say it wasn't so, for the people who knew him best never questioned his integrity. Textile Baseball - The industrial cotton mills were chiefly responsible for the south's recovery from The Civil War. Collectively, the mills brought the "true grit" American working class together. The timeless competitive spirit of work and play, from scratch to scrap teams, evolved into a baseball era of unyielding desire, aspiration, and anticipation to excel. Textile baseball produced many great legendary ball players. Mill workers by the thousands once swarmed out of drudgery when the whistles blew on Saturday afternoons, to their village ballparks to enjoy the thrill of America's favorite pastime - baseball.

Shoeless Joe Jackson Month Greenville, South Carolina. The City of Greenville, South Carolina, opened an exhibit free to the public during the month of July, 1999 to highlight the life and career of Joseph Jefferson Wofford Jackson, who came from the Brandon Community, a textile mill village in West Greenville, South Carolina. Greenville Mayor Knox White proclaimed the month of July as Shoeless Joe Jackson Month. The display closed at month's end but will likely be back. July was chosen as Shoeless Joe Jackson Month because Joe was born on July 16, 1888, and Joe and Kate were married on July 19, 1908. Myth "Whereas in 1919, the infamous 'Black Sox' scandal erupted when an employee of a New York gambler allegedly bribed eight players of the Chicago White Sox, including Joseph Jefferson 'Shoeless Joe' Jackson, to throw the first and second games of the 1919 World Series to the Cincinnati Reds." Facts : The bribery was as "alleged" as the 1918 influenza epidemic. Only seven players were involved in the plot; the eighth, Buck Weaver, was charged only with knowing about the scheme but failing to report it. The conspirators agreed to lose the

"Shoeless Joe" Jackson Banned from Baseball A deadly hitter and a fielder whose glove was called "the place where triples go to die," Shoeless Joe Jackson carved a name for himself in baseball history for his monumental skills and on-field achievements. But his legacy remains a sad one, tainted by association with the infamous "Black Sox Scandal" of the 1919 World Series. In response to suspicions that the White Sox had thrown the series under the influence of sports bookies, baseball commissioner Judge Kennesaw Mountain Landis banned Joe Jackson and seven of his teammates for life, sending a no-tolerance message regarding the presence of betting in baseball. Of all the players, Jackson's involvement in the conspiracy seemed the least plausible, as his on-field stats were sparkling a .375 batting average and a perfect fielding percentage during the series. A jury later acquitted Jackson of the charges, and despite holding the third highest lifetime batting average in baseball history at .356, the legendary outfielder remains an outcast from the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Biography On July 16, 1888, the future "Shoeless Joe" was born Joseph Jefferson Jackson in Pickens County, South Carolina, as the eldest of George and Martha Jackson's eight children. As a child Joe worked alongside his father in a textile mill in Brandon Mill, SC, and by 13 was starring on the mill's baseball team.

"Moonlight" Graham Biography (Text reprinted from The Moonlight Graham Baseball Card. Following a highly successful minor league career with the Charlotte Hornets of the North Carolina Baseball League, Archibald Wright Graham made his major league debut on June 29, 1905, with the New York Giants. It was the same day he retired from professional baseball. With a ten-run lead over the Brooklyn Dodgers after eight innings, Giants manager John McGraw made a defensive change, replacing George Brown with Archie "Moonlight" Graham in right field. In less than five minutes, three quick infield outs by the Dodgers ended the game, along with Graham's only chance to face a big league pitcher. While the Giants went on to defeat the Philadelphia Athletics four games to one in the 1905 World Series, Graham left baseball to fulfill his dream of becoming a medical doctor, eventually pursuing his life's work in Chisholm, Minnesota, the year following the Great Chisholm Fire of 1908. "Doc" Graham spent his first six years practicing medicine at Chisholm's Rood Hospital and the next 44 years as physician for the Chisholm schools, where he gained national recognition for his thirteen year study of children's blood pressure, as well as the love and respect of the entire local community. Moonlight Graham finally did get his time at bat in the 1989 motion picture Field of Dreams.

Lifetime .356 Batting Average Thanks to Ed Nixon of SABR for the following contribution. "...There is much I can tell you about Joe Jackson, but let me give you some highlights to his great career. In 1911 he batted .408 , but was still beat out by Ty Cobb . Over the course of two seasons, 1911 and 1912, he averaged .402. During a throwing contest, he tossed a baseball 396 feet on a line and beat out the likes of Babe Ruth, Bob Meusel, and others, to win a trophy. In thirteen years, Jackson struck out only 158 times. Jackson had a career high 32 OF assists in one season. In the 1919 WS he hit .375, threw out six baserunners, had 13 hits(the official scorer took away one hit, he called it an error on the fielder), hit the series only home run, fielded 1000 per cent, and they say this man was tanking the series!! what a crock!! Christy Mathewson said Jackson had no part in throwing the series, from what he observed from the scorers table. Nobody loved the game more than Joe Jackson, thats why he played outlaw and semi-pro ball until 1937....".
