N E W S Initializing... W E L C O M E Welcome to the Shoeless Joe Jackson Virtual Hall of Fame , the Official web site of the Shoeless Joe Jackson Society. This site is devoted to the memory of Shoeless Joe Jackson and the movement to persuade Major League Baseball to remove Joe Jackson from their ineligible list, thereby making him eligible for election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. All that we ask is that you visit our site with an open mind. We have many facts and statistics about Joe within the Virtual Hall . We don't even ask that you take our word for what is within our site, but that you get interested enough in Joe Jackson to go and do the research.........to get the answer for yourself. We feel sure that you will come to the same conclusion we did many years ago. That conclusion is, Joe played his best in the World Series of 1919, he fielded to win, he batted to win, he ran the bases to win. We admit, Joe did have guilty knowledge of the fix, but we feel his punishment in perpetuity is unjust for this "supposed" crime.

Jackson's death derailed efforts to reinstate him
The momentum behind the effort to get Joe Jackson reinstated into baseball died with him on December 5, 1951. Baseball Commissioner Kennesaw Mountain Landis set the tone for the future of discussions on Jackson when Jackson and seven other members of the 1919 Chicago White Sox were banned from the game for life in 1920. With each time that the baseball writers or veterans committees announce new inductees into baseball's Hall of Fame, the debates can stir again. Does Joe Jackson deserve a place in baseball's Hall of Fame? The numbers say yes. His career average of .356 is one of the highest ever and the highest of any player not currently in the Hall of Fame. Bill James rates Jackson as 6th among left-fielders in his recent addition of the Baseball Abstract. Jackson played in 1330 games between 1908 and 1920. He hit 54 home runs and drove in 785 runs. The Black Sox scandal, however, remains the tarnish on his shining career.

Jackson story still
captivating to fans
From "Eight Men Out" to "Field of Dreams," the story of South Carolina's Joe Jackson and his heroics on the field have been brought to millions of people. Probably one of the biggest footnotes on a Hall of Fame career came in the 1919 World Series and the banishment from baseball that would come in 1920.Jackson's baseball skills surfaced at the age of 13. He was too young to work in the mill, but he became a regular on the Brandon Mill baseball team. When Joe hit a home run, his brothers would pass the hat through the crowd. It wouldn't be unusual for Jackson to make $25 for his efforts. The early years of his career, Jackson not only played in the field, but he also pitched. He dropped the pitching after he made a wild throw and broke a batter's arm. The "Shoeless Joe" nickname is credited to Scoop Latimer, a writer for The Greenville News. According to the story, Jackson was breaking in a new pair of cleats in a textile baseball game. When his feet became blistered, Jackson asked to be taken out of the game. His coach refused, so Jackson pulled off his shoes and played in his stockings. Later in the game, when he hit a home run, a fan for the other team shouted, "Oh, you shoeless son of a bitch." Latimer heard the comment and censored it down to, simply, "Shoeless Joe."

JOE JACKSON
Joe Jackson had the talent to be the greatest player in history, but he threw it away when he accepted $5,000 to throw the 1919 World Series. As part of the most infamous scandal in sports history, Jackson was banished from baseball following the 1920 season, along with his seven co-conspirators. The controversy over that decision has kept Jackson's name alive long after his death in 1951, but the facts remain the same: Jackson was guilty of accepting bribe money from gamblers to fix the series.
As a player, Jackson was a left-handed hitter with a beautiful swing, which Babe Ruth claimed to have imitated. Jackson had power and speed, was considered the finest left fielder in the game, and possessed a strong arm. He never won a batting title, but finished second to Ty Cobb in his first three full seasons, and ranked third on two other occasions. With his career curtailed because of the "Black Sox" scandal, Jackson's career average remained frozen at .356 - the third highest in history.
Nicknames
"Shoeless Joe," which, depending on which story you believe, either got stuck on Jackson because he didn't have any shoes during a minor league game in South Carolina, or when his shoes were stolen or misplaced.
