ASIAMS.NET ASIAN AMERICAN ISSUES WILL BASEBALL SAVE THE AM IMAGE?
(Updated Wednesday, Apr 10, 2002, 09:46:27 AM) ypher Hideo Nomo led the Asian invasion in spectacular fashion when he donned Dodger blue in 1994. His outlandish corkscrew delivery may have helped draw even more media glare than was warranted by his meteoric rise and fall (and recent re-emergence) as a pitching talent. His Dodger teammate Chanho Park, who came from Corea in 1995, showed that an Asian hurler could have staying power too not to mention ultimately command seven-figure annual salaries.
Now the Mariners are stealing the Asian baseball spotlight with the dazzling $13 million Ichiro Suzuki. Halfway into his rookie season here, he was leading the league in hits and steals, not to mention drawing $2 million magazine offers to pose nude. His reward an All-Star slot along with Chanho Park. Even better, their respective teams stand an excellent chance of meeting in the World Series.
Currently six other Asian ballers mostly Japanese and Corean imports are playing in the American majors and are, for the most part, doing well. That's why scouts are now laying the groundwork for importing as many as 15 more young stars from Japan, Corea and even Taiwan in time for the 2002 season. Admittedly, even a contingent of 24 Asian ballplayers would be only 5% of a combined major league roster of about 500. But if Nomo, Park and Suzuki are any indication, they could have a significant impact on the Asian male media image.

A Japanese ownership group led by major league pitchers Hideo Nomo, Hideki Irabu and Mac Suzuki announced plans Tuesday to buy the independent Northern League's Elmira Pioneers. The group will buy 51 percent of the Pioneers from the Ervin family. The Ervins will retain a 49 percent share in the team they have owned since 1996. Steve Ervin will remain the executive vice president of the team and said the rest of the front office will also remain the same. Nomo, Irabu and Suzuki formed a company called Silex to buy the Pioneers. The team will stay in Elmira, where a professional team has played almost continuously since 1885. "This is a real shot in the arm," Ervin said. "I don't know the actual demographics, but if we're not the smallest town in the league, then we're the second. They have the resources to buy other teams but became comfortable with us."

The New Wave from Japan and the Transformation of Our National Pastimes
By Robert Whiting
Robert Whiting wrote the definitive book on Japanese baseball in You Gotta Have Wa, exposing the idiosyncrasies of the game as it is played in Japan. In The Meaning of Ichiro, Whiting takes a look at how the influx of Japanese players to America and the major leagues has affected all those involved. The title comes from Ichiro Suzuki, the first every day player to come from Japan and sign with the Seattle Mariners. While a few pitchers had been signed by MLB, no every day player had ever caught on with a major league team, due in part to the notion that Japanese players were simply inferior to American born players. Ichiro immediately changed all of that by instantly become one of the best all around talents in MLB, winning a batting title in his first season and leading all players in votes garnered for the All-Star Game. MLB immediately began taking Japanese baseball more seriously and Whiting documents the steady flow of players looking to make the jump across the Pacific.

We should also recall that this year marks the 100th anniversary of the inception of the baseball exchange between Japan and the United States. A team composed of Waseda University students visited the United States in 1905 as the first Japanese baseball team to play in the U.S. The relationship between Japan and the United States began in 1853, when Admiral Commodore Matthew Perry arrived at Tokyo bay. Baseball was introduced to Japan in the early 1870s. Thus there was only a 20-year baseball gap during our 150-long history of Japan-U.S. relations. The interaction between the two countries through baseball harkens back to the first international game between Ichiko (the First High School) and the American residents of Yokohama in 1896. But the inception of true international exchange occurred when the Waseda University baseball team traveled to the U.S. in 1905. In 1908, the Reach All-American team stopped in Japan during its world tour, giving the Japanese people their first opportunity to see American professionals. The celebrated arrival of the U.S. Major League All-Star Team including Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in 1934 had a huge impact on the Japanese people. In the wake of straight defeats, the Japanese people felt that the establishment of a professional league was indispensable to the improvement of the sport in Japan. It was only one month later that the first professional team, the Tokyo Yomiuri Giants, was formed. International exchanges proved a decisive impetus to the development of Japanese professional baseball.

Irabu makes his debut #97 Classic Moment: July 10, 1997 Hideki Irabu arrived in New York surrounded by a lot of hype and even more questions about how he would adjust to life at Yankee Stadium after having played in Japan. In his major league debut, Irabu seemed to answer those questions, striking out nine batters in 6 2/3 innings and earning several standing ovations on the way to a 10-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Irabu had four strikeouts in the first two innings as he retired the first six batters he faced. In the fourth inning, he got Detroit slugger Tony Clark to strike out looking at a changeup down the middle. After Bob Hamelin singled, Irabu got two more strikeouts to end the inning. Irabu never quite lived up to the promise of his first outing with the Yankees. He went 5-4 with a 7.09 ERA in 1997 and was inconsistent in two more seasons before George Steinbrenner called him a "fat toad" and traded him to the Montreal Expos before the 2000 season.

Student Profile: George Rose
By Dave Westreich The constant crush of reporters and fans presents the professional American athlete with particular challenges and pressures, pressures felt even more acutely by athletes with no previous introduction to American culture. George Rose ’00 (prev ’99) is currently the translator for Hideki Irabu, the star Japanese pitcher acquired last season by George Steinbrenner. Irabu is among the first of a crop of talented young Japanese pitchers who find themselves in places like Arlington, Texas and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in dire need of people they can trust to translate their thoughts and observations into English. Rose will defer a graduation this May from CBS to travel with Mr. Irabu for the duration of the season, sitting beside Irabu in the dugout and locker room. Of course, simply sitting in the New York Yankee dugout and locker room, Rose will no doubt become the repository of stories that even the most casual baseball fan will appreciate. The Bottom Line ’s Dave Westreich managed to catch George on the phone after the first Yankee exhibition game in Tampa, Florida last Friday.

1. Cabrera is going to be the leader in this team very soon. He just has to stop making stupid plays on the basepaths, and be a little bit more patient, and he will be in business. Did you see him after he scored in the 8th? And the play he made in the 2nd?
2. Barrett's mistake on the basepaths was stupid. But the guy just turned it around lately, so maybe he is just not used to be on the basepaths anymore! ;-)
3. Pride's at-home throw was idiot. It costs us 2 more runs in the 2nd.
4. Yoshii has been impressive. I think he can perform like he did in 1999 with the Mets. He could be our best pitcher after Armas, Vazquez, Pavano (sic!) and Thurman (sic!).
5. Barrett should go talk to the pitcher more often when he is struggling. Same for Arnsberg.
6. Peters should be send down to Ottawa or released. Delyno 05-29-2001, 11:12 AM

1997 Rookies
By Tom Tippett,
October 29, 1997 To help you begin thinking about the upcoming rookie drafts in your Diamond Mind leagues (or other fantasy leagues, for that matter), here is a list of all players who made their major-league debut in 1997. Because many leagues do not allow you to draft a player before he appears in the major leagues, chances are these players will be available in your league's draft. Some of these guys will help you right away, while others are highly-touted comers who were called up in September for the first time. Last year, I scooped up Nomar Garciaparra with my first draft pick (even though he didn't play much in 1996), and this year's list contains several players who are expected to do the same next year. This is a great place to find the guys who can begin to turn your team around or who can help sustain that dynasty that you've put together.

How Good are the Yankees?
By Tom Tippett
August 16, 1998 I've been waiting all season for the Yankees to come back to earth. And they just keep on winning. And winning. And winning. They won their 90th game today, against just 30 losses, giving them a .750 winning percentage that puts them among the best teams in baseball history. So why do I find it so hard to believe this is one of the all-time great teams? Perhaps it's because my expectations weren't that high coming into the season. Our pre-season projections showed the Yankees winning 92 games and the AL East by a comfortable margin over the Red Sox and Orioles. There was a reason why our forecast wasn't higher, and that was Hideki Irabu. It was nearly impossible to come up with a solid projection for him, since (a) we had no idea how to interpret his Japanese stats, (b) he was horrible in the majors last year, (c) his 1997 minor-league performance was good but not outstanding, and (d) his spring training starts were a mix of awful and brilliant outings. We didn't really know what to make of him. Our formulas projected him to be a significantly-below average pitcher this year, but it was clear that if Irabu turned out to be even an average major-league starter, New York might win 98 or 99 games. But I never ever thought the upside potential was any greater than that.

Washington, DC, Mar. 14 (UPI) Washingtonians will no doubt remember the year 2005 when America's national pastime returns to their city, as the new Washington Nationals will start playing baseball in April. However, we should also recall that this year marks the 100th anniversary of the inception of the baseball exchange between Japan and the United States. A team composed of Waseda University students visited the United States in 1905 as the first Japanese baseball team to play in America. Baseball is one of the most popular sports in Japan and the United States. It has played an important role in deepening the mutual understanding between the two peoples. A century ago, no one could imagine that both Japanese and Americans would become excited by Ichiro Suzuki's breaking the Major League all-time record for single season hits and by Hideki Matsui's remarkable performance in post-season games. Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the trans-Pacific exchange of baseball, this essay will recount the history of the growing interaction between the two countries through their national sport.

DiMaggio played in 10 World Series, and was the American League's Most Valuable Player in 1939, 1941 and 1947. In 1948, he led the league with 39 home runs and 155 runs batted in. When Their Majesties Emperor Showa and Empress Kojun visited the U.S. for the first time in 1975, Mr. and Mrs. Hank Aaron were invited to a dinner hosted by President Ford in honor of Their Majesties. This clearly showed that baseball had become a cornerstone for Japan-U.S. relations. Nowadays, President Bush and Prime Minister Koizumi enjoy discussing baseball every time they meet. Both leaders love to throw out the ceremonial first pitch in professional games.
Ambassador Ryozo Kato, a baseball fanatic, stated the following in an interview with Thomas Boswell of the Washington Post on June 25, 2003:
