Over a 12-year career Jumbo saw action with the Cubs, Yankees, Reds and Giants, almost entirely in relief. wins above replacement On his career, Jumbo Brown was worth 13.0 WARP3, and his ERA+ was 98. Anybody find anyone that can challenge Jumbo in the sumo ring? Posted on Apr 10, 2004 at 1:06 PM
Comments What did David Wells weigh in at during his chubbiest period? I'd put him north of 250 at a guess. Posted by: John Y. at April 10, 2004 02:40 PM No other pitcher has been listed over 265 according to Sean Lahman's db. Wells is now at 230 and is listed at 225 by Lahman. Then again, Terry "Big Tub of Goo" Forster was listed at 210 for his entire career. Wells, Forster, Rich Garces, Tim Stoddard, Hideki Irabu, Rod Beck, and a few others probably approached 300 in reality but never updated their official numbers. ©1999 Sage Publications This article examines American media portrayals of two Japanese pitchers now playing American major league baseball: Hideo Nomo and Hideki Irabu. Data gathered for this article were drawn from the sports sections of the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, and Sports Illustrated. Evidence suggests that journalistic portrayals of Asian athletes have perpetuated stereotypes in regard to both Asian Americans and Asian nationals. Specifically, this article argues that portrayals of Nomo and Irabu have reified stereotypes of Asian Americans and Asian nationals as model minorities and economic threats. The author suggests that a greater cultural awareness and sensitivity be taken when writing sports articles that cover athletes from various ethnic and national backgrounds.
Introduction
In 1947, Jackie Robinson suited up in a Brooklyn Dodgers uniform, becoming the first African American ever to play major league baseball outside of the established Negro leagues (Anderson, 1997). Robinson's story is fairly well known among American sports fans. Like any pioneer who breaks racial barriers in American institutions, Robinson experienced extreme racism while promoting social change. For the most part, however, Robinson's story is one of both struggle and success. Enduring extreme racism from fans, opponents, and even some teammates, Robinson proved to be one of the most accomplished baseball players of his time, Black or White, and further proved to some skeptical Americans that African Americans could succeed in traditionally White institutions.

There is no indication that it was provoked. Fortunately for the pudgy star crossed hurler, the woman, whom he had never met before, refused to press charges. If she had, that may have been the end of Irabu's career. Instead, she asked for an apology. However, Irabu gave a different description of the incident to team officials, which lead them to believe that an apology wasn't necessary. Upon hearing this, the woman went to Chunichi Sports, who wrote it up. The team then issued a written apology. They also fined Irabu $2900 and reprimanded him. "I don't want to make a big deal of this," said the unnamed woman. "I don't want any money, either," she told reporters, describing her feelings as a bad incident now being behind her.

Marc Valdes was credited with the victory, but he was screwed, blued and tattooed for five runs, four earned, on six hits in four innings in easily his worst outing of the spring. Irabu was fighting uphill from the get go, as rightfielder Kosuke Fukudome scorched a double into the leftfield corner to to open the game. Two outs later, Irabu ran a fifth pitch curve ball up to the plate and Ochoa, who was sporting a new diamond stud earring given to him by his wife Susie, waited on it then lowered the boom, burying a rocket deep into the leftfield seats near the foul pole for a quick 2-0 Dragons lead. Valdes was victimized by some sloppy defense, though, in coughing that advantage up in the bottom of the frame, as second baseman Makoto Imoaka got aboard on a leadoff groundball error by third baseman Kazuyoshi Tatsunami. Centerfielder Norihiro Akahoshi walked. Both runners were advanced on a sac bunt. Rightfielder Osamu Hamanaka singled to left to convert them and knot it at 2-2. Tigers manager Senichi Hoshino had to be well chuffed at that, as they not only exploited their opportunity, but Hamanaka contines to develop with the bat.
