POST 2002 PRO BASEBALL SEASON Updated January 15, 2003 Matsui's enormous press conference
On Jan 14 in New York, Hideki Matsui held his official press conference to announce that he's a member of the Yankees. It attracted 350 people from the media. Reports say it's the biggest ever conference for the Yankees for its rookie. He wore the pin-striped uniform and chuckles in delight. Matsui will return to Japan once before returning to New York to prepare for the season. Matsui leaves for New York
Japan's well-loved star left for New York on Jan 9. It's Hideki Matsui. He was sent off by hundreds of fans at the airport, and as he made his way to the security area, he waved back at the wellwishers. Nakamura is highest paid Japanese player
On Jan 8, Norihiro Nakamura signed an annual contract for 500 million yen with the Buffaloes. Since Hideki Matsui has left the Japanese league he has become the highest paid among Japanese players in Japan. Nakamura drops Mets for the Buffaloes
Japanese slugger Norihiro Nakamura whom many were speculating would sign a 2-year deal for 2 million dollars with the New York Mets announced on Dec 21 that he will stay with the Kintetsu Buffaloes. Matsui ready to sign with the Yankees
It was learned on Dec 19 that the Yankees offered Hideki Matsui a 3 year contract worth 21 million dollars. And on Dec 20, Matsui held a press conference himself to officially announce that he's ready to head for New York.

Irabu with the New York Yankees in 1997
September 28 in Detroit It's the final game of the season for the Yankeesthat's of course, excluding the playoffs. Irabu was given a chance to start it. The Yankees scored constantly against the Detroit Tigers. His teammates hit in 2 runs already in the 1st inning. Catcher Jorge Posada homered in the 2nd. Then Paul O'Neill and Bernie Williams each single a homer the following inning. It was only in the 5th inning that Irabu gave up a homer. He finished that inning, and since the Yankees won 7 to 2, Irabu collected his 5th win. September 23 in Cleveland Irabu pitched the 7th inning all right. At that point, the Yankees were ahead of the Cleveland Indians But in the 8th, he was homered by David Justice, then doubled by Sandy Alomar. He made a negative contribution, allowing the Indians to reverse the game. The Indians won it 10 to 9. September 20 in New York The Yankees have found their place in the playoffs by defeating the Toronto Blue Jays in the 11th inning 4-3. Irabu pitched the 6th inning, and hurled a speed ball which marked 156 kilos. He lost a base hit and walked one. September 18 in New York It was at a crucial pointin the 7th inning, with the Yankees tied 6-6 to the Detroit Tigers, that Irabu was appointed to pitch. It's been 13 days since he pitched in a game. Perhaps, his daily training at the gym had gotten him in better shape, for he had 2 good innings, stiking out 4. When he finished the top of the 8th, the fans gave him a big hand. Unfortunately, the Yankees were defeated in the 11th inning, 7 to 9.

Hideki Irabu strikes out NINE in first game!
Written by J. P. Essene Editor What's HOT!
The Japanese pitching phenom named Hideki Irabu made his debut tonight! He struck out NINE Tigers! Hideki in Japanese means choice. (Editors note. A Japanese reader corrected us by saying Irabu means choice.) The choice for this 99 MPH fireballer was the Yankees or no baseball in the US! He got his wish and tonight the fans of the Yankees cheered on this Japanese version of Nolan Ryan! I hope he's a better winner than Nolan! Nolan although a strike out maven, was a mere .500 pitcher! I was glad as a boy when we got Jim Fregosi for him... Irabu allowed only 2 runs in his first win. He went 6 and 2/3's innings before Joe Torre took him out of the game to two standing ovations. Yankee stadium had near 52 thousand for this debut! Most left after Irabu came out of the game!

The third-baseman charges, picks up the ball, and fires accurately toward first - just in time to nip the runner, who, for some reason, has decided to dive headfirst into the bag. OUT! the umpire cries, prompting one of the team's managers to sprint onto the field to protest, a protest that does not follow the usual profanity laced diatribe favored by North American managers, but may instead take the form of pushes, shoves, and perhaps even a kick or two. Dubbing Godzilla: All in a Day's Work T he random nature of the inner workings of the Newsroom would surprise many. Most readers probably believe that stories develop logically after leads have been tracked down or sources milked for facts. Sure, that can happen - but not all of the time. Take the Captain's latest, which began with a simple memo left on his desk from junior reporter Junko: The Yankees called.
    - Junko During a rare moment of semi-sobriety, and with a grin forming within his morning stubble, he exclaimed (rather loudly, and with both fists thrust in the air): "Just give me the ball!" In anticipation, he molded the fingers of his right hand into his four-seamer grip, all the while assuming that initially he, and his dominating curve and cutter, would be showcased in late-inning set-up situations until eventually moving into the starting rotation. Then he whipped out his glove from his desk drawer and started working the pocket with a ball. But in the end, sadly, it just wasn't to be. Later, after Junko heard the ruckus in his office, she scorned him for his hubris, mentioned that his tie was spotted with drool (amongst other things), and informed him that he was actually going to

Japan's latest export is not a car or electronic gadget, it's a Giant - or Yomiuri Giant to be precise. On Thursday, December 19th 2002, Hideki Matsui agreed to a $21 million contract with the New York Yankees and the 186 cm/95 kg power-hitting outfielder left Tokyo for American shores to join the wave of Japanese baseball players who have helped to pave the way into Major League Baseball. Nicknamed Godzilla, Matsui is the biggest Japanese baseball star yet to join the major leagues. Hailing from Ishikawa, Japan, Matsui developed a fearsome reputation in 1992 during the National High School Baseball Championships (Koshien) when he was playing for Seiryo High School. The opposing pitchers were so intimidated by his record of 60 home runs that they deliberately walked him five times. Matsui went on to become the Number One draft pick by the Yomiuri Giants in 1993 and now at 28 years old, is a three-time Most Valuable Player of Japan's Central League.

Be Careful What You Wish For
It was just a matter of time before Hideki Irabu and George Steinbrenner discovered what the rest of us already knew: that even under the best conditions, making the transition from the Chiba Lotte Marines to the New York Yankees would be difficult. Under the conditions that Irabu set for himself, however, it has been darned near impossible. In a display of two-facedness that would have made the late Richard M. Nixon proud, Irabu humbly stated his dream to play baseball professionally in the United States; then, when it became evident that his dream would be realized via the San Diego Padres, he and his agent, Don Nomura, suddenly changed their tune. What Irabu had meant to say, so the story goes, was that he had dreamed of playing for the Yankees. Apparently his dream included visions of himself making outrageous demands of his prospective new employer and insisting he would not work unless those demands were met. Perhaps this is unfair of me, because I've never been a terrorist, but it seems that the only careers in which this type of behavior is tolerated and too often rewarded are terrorism and professional sports. I can count on one finger the number of seconds I would remain employed were I to place such demands on my employer. Irabu's crowning achievement came when he compared San Diego to a prison camp. I have lived in San Diego for several years, and although I have never been incarcerated, I like to think that my present living conditions are significantly better than those of a prison (unless I was in for tax evasion or embezzlement or something and got to watch TV and play golf all day).
