Advocates for the deaf want hall to get the sign
Owen S. Good
Cooperstown News Bureau
The signals were sign language, more graceful than the cap-touching and belly-rubbing that goes on at the top dugout step, and Carrie Blakesley was using it to relate the Baseball Hall of Fame's Induction Ceremony to a group of about 30 deaf baseball fans Sunday.
Blakesley, a sign-language teacher from Albany, signed most of the proceedings for the group, which was attending the ceremonies to lobby for the election of a deaf 19th-century ballplayer to the hall of fame. She saw the signs and flyers in support of William "Dummy" Hoy and volunteered her time.
"They were disappointed that there wasn't an interpreter out here," said Blakesley. "I told them before I'm not up on baseball terms (in sign language) so there would be a lot of finger-spelling."
Many in the group to whom Blakesley was signing were with a Rochester-based committee seeking credit for Hoy, who played from 1888 to 1902 and easily had the greatest career of a seriously-handicapped player. Bob Panara, leader of the American Athletic Association for the Deaf's Committee for Dummy Hoy, said the group had spoken to hall officials about getting a sign-language interpreter or closed-captioning for the video screen by the main stage.
Panara, who is deaf, signed through an interpreter that his group distributed flyers touting Hoy before last year's ceremony, but was asked to stop this year. They waved signs from an area to the left of the main stage as this year's inductees accepted their plaques.

15. Capsule Biography
Without “dummy” hoy, baseball just wouldn’t be the same. hoy deserves to berecognized for his achievements—not hearsay, not myth, not folklore, not legend,
http://www.dummyhoy.com/overview/bio.html
A capsule biography
Hoy was a small man, 5'4" or 5'5" tall, weighing 145-155 pounds, probably the shortest major-league outfielder in history. What he lacked in heft, he made up for in cunning and swiftness. He was a celebrated “flyhawk,” a great centerfielder, on a par with Joe DiMaggio, Willie Mays, and Tris Speaker.
During his rookie year in the majors (1888), Hoy led the National League with 82 stolen bases, a record that tops those of some of the most celebrated Hall of Famers. (Ty Cobb stole no bases during his rookie year, Babe Ruth 10.) His career total: 597 to 607 stolen bases (depending on which account you read).
before Klem began his umpiring career.

On June 1 st , Americans awoke to the news that Johnstown, Pennsylvania had been devastated by the worst flood in U.S. history. Over 2,200 were dead, with many more homeless. Johnstown was a steel company town with a population of 30,000. It had grown quickly into an industrious community known for the quality of its steel. After a night of heavy rains, the South Fork Dam that protected the city collapsed, sending twenty million tons of water crashing down the narrow valley. Filled with huge chunks of debris, the wall of floodwater grew at times to sixty feet high, tearing downhill at forty miles per hour, leveling everything in its path.

John T. Brush approved a new salary classification plan based on rating players personal habits from A to E. Class "A" players received $2500 dollars while a Class "E" player was paid $1,500 dollars and expected to help clean the clubhouse. The Brotherhood of Professional Baseball Players was displeased with the policy, but managed to avert a strike by proposing the development of a third league.

Taylor was a deaf-mute. He was a favorite of the Giants' John McGraw , perhaps because he could not talk back. McGraw learned the rudiments of signing so he could communicate with Taylor from the bench. They were sharing opinions of Tim Hurst 's umpiring one day without knowing the arbiter had a deaf relative and was also proficient in signing. Hurst ejected them both.
