Can pitchers prevent hits on balls in play?
Tom Tippett
July 21, 2003 In January, 2001, Voros McCracken published an article that shook the baseball analysis community. In an attempt to better understand how to separate the contributions of pitching and defense, McCracken divided the traditional pitching stats into two groups those that are under the direct control of the pitcher (hit batsmen, walks, strikeouts, homers) and those that aren't (hits on balls in play). He called the first group defense-independent pitching stats, or DIPS for short. I'll get into the details shortly, but before I do, the reason McCracken's work caused such a stir is that he reached a conclusion that seems very counter-intuitive and, if true, extremely important. In his own words, he stated his major finding in these two ways, once at the beginning of the article and once at the end: "hits allowed are not particularly meaningful in the evaluation of pitchers" "major-league pitchers don't appear to have the ability to prevent hits on balls in play"

The Quality Start is a Useful Statistic
By David W. Smith
Spring, 1992 First, let's address the initial question: what is the ERA of pitchers in their quality starts? Table 1 is a summary of the results from all games from 1984-1991, 16831 games total, of which about 52% were quality starts. The information in this table is divided two ways. First, each league is presented individually, and second, the games are separated by quality starts and non-quality starts. Table 1. Summary of Quality Start data from 1984-1991 %QS Starts W L Pct IP ERA IP/Start AL QS 49.3 8935 6184 2749 .692 67370.1 1.93 7.54 AL NQS 9195 2878 6313 .313 44578.1 7.65 4.85 NL QS 54.9 8522 5590 2927 .656 62767.1 1.89 7.37 NL NQS 7010 2170 4833 .309 33171.2 7.28 4.73 ML QS 51.9 17457 11774 5676 .674 130137.2 1.91 7.45 ML NQS 16205 5048 11146 .311 77750.0 7.50 4.80 Totals 33662 16822 16822 .500 207887.2 4.00 6.18 Note 1: The 33662 Starts came in 16831 games, of which 9 were ties. Note 2: There were 989 quality starts in which the pitcher had exactly six innings pitched and allowed 3 earned runs, for a "Klein percentage" of 5.7%. There are three main points to make from this table.

    MY AUTOGRAPHS
Autograph collecting can be fun and exciting.
All you will need is two stamps, two envelopes and a handwritten
or typed letter. I have been collecting autographs for a number of
years and have enjoyed it very much. I do it for fun and not profit.
If a star sends me an extra autograph I will give it to a friend
or to someone I know that likes the sports star or actor/actress.
This is a list of autographs that I have collected over the years.
I have provided an address but they may be out dated so there is no
guarantees when send off for an autograph.
Some stars are just GREAT about it and some, well are not so great.

    Selig denies playing favorites
He won't own up to any Sox bias
By Gordon Edes, Globe Staff, 1/11/2004 Two years after the sale of the Red Sox, a process Bud Selig's critics claim the commissioner rigged so the John Henry-Tom Werner-Larry Lucchino ownership group would prevail, Selig is offering no apologies. On the contrary. ADVERTISEMENT "I see this as a great validation of our judgment," said Selig, who will be honored tomorrow night at the Boston Baseball Writers dinner with the Judge Emil Fuchs Award for long and meritorious service to the game. "This group has a tremendous intensity to win, they've become a great member of the community, they've reached out to the fans you can look at a whole spectrum of things," said Selig. "Why shouldn't I be proud of the way this has come down? What are the negatives?" Selig acknowledges he played a prominent role in the process, in which John Harrington and the Yawkey Foundation selected the bid of The Trio over cable magnate Charles Dolan and a bid made by local moguls Joe O'Donnell and Steve Karp, who had the support of an influential part of the local community. "I am a very active commissioner," Selig said, "but the commissioners in all sports are very aggressive, and play significant roles in choosing new ownership. Whether it's the Dodgers or the Red Sox, there is no more critical or viable role for a commissioner than helping to determine who owns the clubs.

    Off the Kuff
Knowledge Is Good in the Reality-Based Community
Contact me: kuff - at - offthekuff.com Main April 29, 2005 The 300 Club revisited Roger Clemens faces off against Greg Maddux tonight in a rare battle of 300-game winners. Not counting four matchups between Pud Galvin and Tim Keefe in the 1890s, such an event has happened only four times before, all involving Don Sutton, and all in the 1980s. If you're at the Juice Box tonight, be sure to enjoy being a part of history. Of course, we can't have a story about 300-game winners squaring off without a bit of existential woolgathering on the nature of winning 300 games as a Major League pitcher.
Sutton doubts there will be many more of these types of games once Clemens and Maddux retire. With 263 career victories, Mets lefthander Tom Glavine is the closest active player to 300 victories, but he's 39 and hasn't won as many as 12 games since 2002. Randy Johnson, 41, is next on the active victories list at 248, followed by David Wells, 41, at 214 and Mike Mussina, 36, at 212. Clemens tends to agree with Sutton's assessment that specialization in relief roles and the money invested in pitchers are reasons why today's young starters might find it more difficult to claim 300 victories.
