It’s not, as the rest of us might believe, something engendered by 60,000 baseball fans screaming your name as the sound of a giant bell echoes from the surrounding darkness. BONGGG ... BONGGG ... So goes the opening to AC/DC’s rock anthem “Hell’s Bells.” That hard-charging song heralds the pitcher’s entrance into the fray. A powerful guitar riff segues in after the bells, which toll for thee—especially if thee are an opposing batter due up to the plate against the San Diego Padres in the ninth inning. The song now “belongs” to right-handed hurler Trevor William Hoffman. He is, of course, one of the best closers in Major League Baseball. He is paid handsomely—his four-year, $32 million contract is the highest in Padres history—to get three outs in tight games. The 33-year-old is a three-time All-Star. He put the finishing touches on 43 team victories last year. If Hoffman notches that many saves this year, he will be the first pro player to record five seasons with 40-plus saves. The 6-foot, 215-pound hurler with redwood-size thighs is 14th on the all-time list with 271 career saves.

He had good heat, but he wanted to do something different with his career. "I felt that if I wanted to be a guy who could throw at the end of the ballgame and have success at this level for a sustained period of time, I needed a pitch that I would qualify as an equalizer," Hoffman said. And what pitch would become the equalizer? He was already throwing a good 95-97 MPH fastball! The pitch that would raise him to a new level would be the changeup, which he learned from Donnie Elliot. Hoffman had just joined the Padres in an early season trade and Elliot taught the youngster how to pitch, how to throw the circle changeup. Major League Baseball Graphs The Dirty Details Baseball Graphs Home 2003 Win Shares 2003 National League Pitching Stats This is a list of all National League pitchers, ranked by Earned Runs Saved Above Average (ERSAA). ERSAA is a measure of how many runs the pitcher saved, given the number of innings he pitched, relative to the league. It's computed this way: League ERA minus pitcher ERA times innings pitched divided by nine, plus an adjustment for the home park. Lee Sinins uses the same statistic in his weekly stats report, only I believe he computes total runs saved, not just earned runs saved. I've supplied other rate stats, to give a bit more insight. In particular, I've included each pitcher's ERA and Innings pitched, as well as his FIP and associated DER. These are the exact same stats I use in the graphs, and they are defined in detail on the Details page . These two stats, by the way, seem to have about an equal impact on ERA, and they account for about 80% of ERA differences between pitchers. The rate stats are not adjusted for home park. The underlying source for this data is Doug . The home park adjustment comes from Patriot These stats are sortable. Click on the top of the column to sort by that item.
