1996 Cardinal Streaks into Postseason
Record-setting 18 game win streak brings West Regional to Sunken Diamond
With less than a month to go in the regular season, the 1996 Stanford baseball team was 23-17 overall and 10-11 in the Six-Pac. Then came "The Streak." The 1996 Cardinal left a permanent mark in the school record book by reeling off 18 consecutive victories over a span of 38 days. The record-breaking streak clinched second place in the Six Pac for the Cardinal, and also earned it the right to host the NCAA West Regional at Sunken Diamond. The streak also included several individual and team accomplishments that will be long remembered on The Farm:
  • Brian Dallimore became the first Cardinal player on record to
  • record six hits in a game when he went 6-for-6 with six RBI in a
  • 22-4 win at Arizona on April 21.

He seems to think he can build a playoff contending team with a $30 million payroll, a football stadium, uncertain ownership, and indifferent fans. The A's really have become the red-headed stepchild of the Bay Area, with the Giants picking off the plum TV and radio outlets and opening a new stadium next season, while the Warriors and Raiders get Oakland to shell out big bucks to renovate their homes (trashing the A's home in the process.) The current A's owners had a deal to sell the team to a group that promised to keep them in Oakland, but major league owners effectively killed the deal by postponing any decision on ownership changes until their task force on small market teams completes its work. Even though the A's were in the wild-card race down the stretch, nobody came to see them.

Hinch says no to the pros
Stanford All-America catcher will return, wants shot at '96 Olympics by Keith Peters Stanford baseball fans have a lot to look forward to next season, including night games at Sunken Diamond for the first time in school history and the pitching of Kyle Petersonnamed Baseball America's Freshman of the Year on Wednesday. Equally important to those diamond denizens will be the guy in the mask behind the plate. For the 1995-96 season, that person again will be A.J. Hinch, who spurned pro offers from the Minnesota Twins this weekdeciding instead to return to Stanford for his senior year. "It was a difficult decision, because I've wanted to play pro baseball all my life," Hinch said Wednesday from Millington, Tenn., were he is training with the USA Baseball National Team. "But, for myself, getting my degree (on time) and having a chance to play in the Olympics simply outweigh pro baseball at this moment. "How many guys in a lifetime get a chance to play on the U.S. National Team four years and play in the Olympics, and perhaps win a gold medal? It was too much to pass up." Hinch told Stanford head coach Mark Marquess of his decision Monday.
