I guess that means Higgy is back in RF and Dmitri Young goes to LF. The Commissioner 12-20-2002, 08:57 PM Why didn't they offer Fick a contract? Where they too overburdened by their abundance of All-Stars in Detroit? racosun 12-20-2002, 10:05 PM I can't see any improvement being made to the team by doing this. I'm baffled. maxcarey 12-21-2002, 04:34 AM I don't think it has much to do with improvement as it does with cost-cutting.
What hasn't been said is that Fick also may not fit into the "professional" category we have been hearing about - remember him getting busted for pot in the minors and his incident at Hockeytown?
If they really wanted him, they could have kept him. The Commissioner 12-21-2002, 08:04 PM I never knew about the two incidents you mentioned there. Maybe he's not as much of an all-around "good guy" as I'd been lead to believe. Baseball Bugs 12-21-2002, 08:16 PM

Those Mets, who finished with 40 wins and 120 losses in 1962, have been invoked often this season, especially near the end of it, as the Tigers challenged their record for baseball's worst season. Main February 03, 2005 Probabilistic Model of Range, Rightfielders In the continuing series, here's the table for 2004 rightfielders. The results were certainly surprising to me. Player InPlay Actual Outs Predicted Outs DER Predicted DER Difference Karim Garcia Kevin Mench Kevin Millar Brian Jordan Sammy Sosa Richard Hidalgo Jermaine Dye Craig Monroe Gabe Kapler Joe Borchard Brady Clark Jacque Jones Bobby Higginson Juan Encarnacion Abraham Nunez Jose Cruz Reed Johnson Gary Matthews Jr. Ichiro Suzuki Alexis I Rios Gary Sheffield Danny Bautista Vladimir Guerrero J.D. Drew Jay Gibbons Michael Tucker Lance Berkman Dustan Mohr Brian Giles Timo Perez Jody Gerut Austin Kearns Magglio Ordonez Ben Grieve Larry Walker Juan Rivera Wily Mo Pena Miguel Cabrera Bobby Abreu Rob Mackowiak Reggie Sanders Jeromy Burnitz Craig A Wilson Shawn Green Matt Stairs The conventional wisdom about Sammy Sosa is summed up nicely in a comment to this post Sosa is past his prime as a baserunner, is in serious decline as a fielder, and is losing it as a hitter. The other thing I find very troubling about this list is the position of Ichiro Suzuki. If I could name one right fielder who I would think had extraordinary range, it would be Ichiro. The model I'm presenting is very simple, and I'm aware of it's flaws and limitations. All of your comments have been very helpful in that regard. I'm going to push forward with the model as is for the rest of the postions before I start trying to improve the calculation, however. This way, we'll have a good baseline for comparison.

So you would figure the Detroit Tigers might concentrate on getting a speedy, slaphappy hitting team to go with their spacious home field. Well, that's what you'd figure. But last year, the Tigers were 11th in the American League in on-base percentage (.320), mainly because they were 12th in hitting (.260). That's simply not the way to get it done in Comerica. A 96-loss season in 2001 proved it. So the Tigers go into 2002 still looking for a little speed and a little hitting as a way to get a little scoring. It hasn't been easy. Detroit lost one of the league's best base stealers when Roger Cedeno, who swiped 55 bases last season, signed with the Mets. That will be hard to replace. The best the Tigers could come up with was getting line-drive hitting first baseman Dmitri Young from Cincinnati for Juan Encarnacion. Young can also play outfield, which makes him a good fit for the Tigers, and the trade definitely tilted to Detroit's side. But Young is no base stealer, so he's not going to help them on the speed thing.

e-mail this article Don't you love Sundays? Is there anything better than getting together with 30 or 40 of your best friends, half of whom happen to be bikini clad busty blondes, drinking a hundred beers, and eating red meat straight off the bone? Oh and you get to watch football too. In a recent commercial, even Louis Armstrong admitted life doesn't get better than sacking a quarterback, or maybe he was referring to the winks from the cheerleaders. Besides, is there anything manlier than blowing frosty smoke out of your nostrils while you stand in Gulag-like temperatures preparing to risk life and limb to deliver a bone jarring hit on an unsuspecting wide receiver? Of course, when it comes to feats of manhood can anything top rejecting your opponents shot into the fourth row? Throwing down a tomahawk jam helps explain why Saturdays aren't bad either. That's when you get to go down to the local park with a 'do rag, million dollar Nikes, and a case of Gatorade to play a couple hours of streetball. Who knows? Maybe Kevin Garnett or Tracy McGrady will swing by to throw a few windmill jams down as they return from the corner store Sprite or Mountain Dew in hand. During the week you can always head over to McDonalds and grab a bite with Kobe Bryant or run over to Burger King to throw back a few Whoppers with Shaq . Heck, even hockey has Keifer Sutherland, a.k.a.

Seven helpful tips for the baseball obsessive
    Life on the Roller Coaster
    by Brad Zellar
April 29, 2002 To borrow from the argot of Edd "Kookie" Byrnes, it was a dark seven for the local baseball nine and its fans; any way you care to cut it, it was a very depressing week indeed. Just 25 games into the season and already the roller coaster, already the nutcracker, already the sucker punch and the meat tenderizer and the lost weekend. Already the full retreat of the rational world. Already the warning signs, the red flags, the litter of cellophane and marathon of malnutrition, the empty caloric blackouts: My God! Did I just eat that entire can of Pringles? Did I seriously just drive to the Holiday store between innings, in my pajamas and Sorels, to buy another box of Dots and another two-liter jug of Mountain Dew? Are my eyes deceiving me? Did the Twins just have the bases loaded and nobody out and fail to score a single run? Did Brad Radke just give up another home run to Randall Simon? Is there any other sport that forces its elderly and unshapely coaches to shoehorn themselves into the same snug uniforms as the players? Is this indignity somehow mandated by the rule book or merely tradition? Could you run in and check the statistics, honey, and see if Denny Hocking actually has more errors than extra-base hits? Did I just borrow from the argot of Edd "Kookie" Byrnes?
