C RACKSMOKERS OF MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL HENDERSON, RICKEY
While their teammates struggled to hold onto a one-run lead in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series, New York Mets outfielders Rickey Henderson and Bobby Bonilla played cards in the clubhouse in a show of defiance against manager Bobby Valentine, according to a published report. The Record of Hackensack reported that, according to people in the organization, the two spent the last three innings in the clubhouse ignoring the game. Henderson, in particular, was angry with Valentine because the manager replaced him with Melvin Mora in the eighth inning of Game 4 after Henderson had already taken his spot in left field. Teammates were not happy about the pair's absence. "Guys who saw (the card game) wanted to take a bat to their heads after the game," one person affiliated with the team said. "There were players crying and screaming in the dugout (after the Mets lost the game in 11 innings). Then they walk in the clubhouse and see that?"

Rickey Henderson signs Indy league contract By Kirk Kenney
May 9, 2005 SAN DIEGOThe San Diego Surf Dawgs begin spring training Monday in Arizona as they prepare for the inaugural season of the Golden Baseball League. Manager Terry Kennedy has 32 players in camp competing for 24 spots on the independent team's roster, but Kennedy already has found a good candidate to bat leadoff: Rickey Henderson. The future Hall of Famer has signed a contract to play for the Surf Dawgs this season. Henderson will earn the league maximum of $3,000 per month, but it is a marketing agreement with the GBL that will prove most lucrative to the 46-year-old outfielder. One of the first special events: Rickey Henderson bobblehead night, of course.

Ok, so maybe the BBWAA's politics will prevent Henderson from getting 100% of the votes, but how close will he come? 98%? 95%?
He's got some pretty incredible numbers, the best this side of Rose, Cobb, or Aaron in some categories:
Career leader:
Runs-2288
Walks-2179 (though he may no longer have this when he's on the ballot)
Stolen Baes- 1403
2nd in Power/Speed Number - 487.5
3rd in Times on Base - 5316
4th in Games - 3051
10th in At Bats - 10889 21st in Hits - 3040 1990 AL MVP Top 10 MVP voting 5 other times 10-time all star 10 Most similar comps: HOFers Brock, Morgan, Kaline, Yount, B.Robinson, Winfield. Molitor, Raines, Staub, and Pinson. And he does very well on the HOF tests: Black Ink: Batting - 50 (Average HOFer ~ 27) Gray Ink: Batting - 143 (Average HOFer ~ 144) HOF Standards: Batting - 52.5 (Average HOFer ~ 50)

He seems to be trying the route Jose Canseco took 2 years ago. He plans to be signed by the summer the article says. But just read it and you'll find out. A Satch In Time Whiffs Nine 05-02-2003, 04:27 PM Yeah, Rickey signed with Newark of the Atlantic League. This was the same franchise that had the Canseco twins two seasons ago. Sandman 05-02-2003, 06:28 PM He can't hit well enough to get back into the big leagues. Pinch runner would be the only way he could go. Warrior 05-07-2003, 04:01 AM i agree with Sandman. Henderson can really only run he isn't really good for anything else. i have an Atlantic League team about 1/2 hour away maybe if Rickey doesn't giv eit up by the time they come maybe i'll go see hom play 05-07-2003, 11:28 PM

Hey Rickey!
Posted by Lesley I was talking baseball with my staff today, and the topic got on to future first-round Hall of Famer and all-around arrogant jackass Rickey Henderson . We were wondering why Rickey would want to play in the minor leagues (and not even a farm team, an independent minor league team) rather than just retire. This was the genesis of the How Should Rickey Henderson End His Baseball Career Poll.
How should Rickey Henderson end his baseball career?
He should just retire already!
Stick him back in the majors for the rest of this year and then let him retire.
Some team should overlook his personality flaws and hire him as a coach.
Bump him down to Little League and give him a forged birth certificate.
Down the Jersey shore, charging $5 for a chance to strike out Rickey Henderson and win a kewpie doll.
Who cares?

Main June 17, 2003 Rickey Henderson I just got back from the Bridgeport Bluefish game. It was a lot of fun, and I recommend a visit to Harbor Yard if you have a chance. The Bluefish beat the Newark Bears 4-2 on the strength of a grand slam byOreste Marrero. Rickey looks good. We were pretty close to the on-deck circle, and Rickey was acknowledging fans who were cheering him. He had 2 hits, a walk, reached on an error, an SB and a CS and scored a run. After the run, the fans near the Neward dugout gave him a nice ovation. Rickey has changed his stance a bit, standing back on one leg as he waits for the pitch to be delivered. His crouch does not seem to be as exaggerated as it used to be. The batting eye is still there. My guess is that he could help some team, and I would not be surprised if he ends up on an MLB team soon. Posted by David Pinto at 10:36 PM Players TrackBack (0) Navigation

56. Baseball Musings: This Article On Rickey Henderson
This article on rickey henderson was sent to me by a friend, and it s just Don Mattingly was the most respected player in baseball at that time.
http://www.baseballmusings.com/archives/001022.php
Main March 26, 2002 This article on Rickey Henderson This article on Rickey Henderson was sent to me by a friend, and it's just hilarious. Very different from the Rickey is moody and hard to get along with articles that you usually find. There are a number of interesting insights.
Rickey on steals: ''Guys stopped stealing when they couldn't get paid for it. It wasn't no money in it. You know what an arbitrator told me one time? He said they let me steal 100 bases. Man! I almost jumped across the table. How did anyone let me steal 100? This game is corporate. Big business. They like home runs, not steals, so you see a lot of guys trying to hit home runs.'' Henderson pauses and says that Roger Cedeno could be a great base-stealer. ''But the last time I saw him on TV, he was pretty bulked up,'' he says. ''So you know what he's going to try to do.'' To a certain extent this is true, but the reality is that when offense is abundant, stolen bases are less important. It's a one run strategy, and when teams are routinely scoring five runs, SB's just aren't worth the risk. Rickey on Mattingly: ''One year, he drove me in 79 times. Did you hear what I said? Seventy-nine times. He would do anything to get me in. You'd have to throw the ball over Mattingly's head for him not to get Rickey in. Dave Winfield used to get mad at him. He'd say, `Now, you ain't the only one who can drive Rickey in.'''

UNION-TRIBUNE May 10, 2005 For real. For good.
2004 file photo / Associated Press Future Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson has joined the San Diego Surf Dawgs with the idea that he could still open a few eyes and earn another opportunity to play in the major leagues.
Well, at least for now. "If I can't do it, if I'm out there making mistakes, I'm going to be the one who will hang up my shoes," the 46-year-old icon said yesterday afternoon. "But I was chosen to play baseball." He is searching, again, for validation. Valediction can wait. "This gives me an opportunity to stay in shape and the way I play might open some eyes," Henderson said from the Surf Dawgs training camp in Mesa, Ariz. "I might get a chance. I'm very convinced. I know I can play in the major leagues. When the time comes around, I still feel I can compete." Rickey Henderson could wear you out in the simple act of taking a lead at first base. Anyone who expected him to leave baseball quietly never saw him steal second.
