Tony Gwynn is one baseball's all-time leading hitters and is destined to go into the Hall of Fame on his first ballot. Gwynn, who retired at the end of the 2001 season, holds San Diego records for batting average, hits, runs, doubles, triples, stolen bases, runs batted in and games. He ranks third in home runs for the Padres. Gwynn now moves to a new baseball career. He will be taking over as head coach of the baseball program at San Diego State University. "They were the people who helped me in my career," Gwynn said in the press conference after his final game. "I've said all along that I couldn't have done it by myself and they were living proof. I learned from all those guys. What I want to do is pass my knowledge on to the others. And that is what I hope to do at San Diego State." In his career, he captured 8 batting titles, putting him in a tie with Honus Wagner for most titles in the National League.

Audio Associate's All-Star Installation Tony Gwynn Stadium became the new home of the San Diego State University baseball program during the 1997 season. Groundbreaking for the project took place on August 21, 1996. The structure is named in honor of the former Aztec and current Padre 13 time All-Star right fielder, Tony Gwynn. The 38 year old, future Hall-of-Famer, who has hit a remarkable .368 over the last five years, entered the 1998 season with a lifetime batting average of .340, tying him for 15th place on the all-time list with George Sisler and Lou Gehrig. Also, at the start of the 1998 season, the eight-time batting champion was only 220 hits away from the prestigious 3,000-hit plateau - a level only 21 players have attained. Equally impressive are the stats of the stadium that bares his name. The $4 million facility was made possible through the generosity of San Diego Padres owner John Moores and his wife, Becky, who donated the funds to make the dream of a state-of-the-art stadium for SDSU Aztec Coach, Jim Dietz, a reality. The design consultant firm of Helmuth, Obata and Kassbaum, Inc., has been involved in numerous baseball facility projects including Coors Field in Denver, Camden Yards in Baltimore and Jacob's Field in Cleveland, in addition to several minor league parks including the San Diego Padres spring training facility in Peoria, Arizona.

Former major league all-star and San Diego State All-American Tony Gwynn will serve as a volunteer coach during the 2002 season as he prepares to take over the head coaching duties in June. Gwynn was named to head up the Aztec program last fall after Jim Dietz announced that the 2002 season would be his final campaign at San Diego State. The 41-year-old Gwynn concluded a 20-year career with the San Diego Padres last October as one of only 16 players (including four National Leaguers) to have played at least 20 seasons and spent their entire career with one team.

This year I’m working on consistency; that was my big problem last season. I had some issues with the swing of the bat. The jump to Double-A wasn’t what I expected and I knew there was something wrong offensively going into the Arizona Fall League. I kind of gassed out at the end there. It started in spring training, and by the time I got to Arizona my mechanics were not good. I still made the Double-A squad, but by the end of the season I was just trying to get through it. I had never dealt with failure like that. So I went back to San Diego State , hit the weights and hit some baseballs off the tee. Looking back, last season was a stepping stone because it allowed me to see the level of competition I’ll probably be facing. It was more of a help than a burden. I was able to work on my base running and my defense, so it was also a benefit from that standpoint. So far, I’ve been more consistent this year, and that’s a step forward for me. I’m hitting the ball to the right side a lot harder. After working on my short game, I’m happy with the start I’ve gotten off to. Being back in
