The Sporting News Hit Masters: Preparation The Swing The Secret Gurus and Idols ... The Groove Tony Gwynn They are baseball's hitting masters, the most dominant batters in their respective leagues for the last half-decade. Between them, Wade Boggs and Tony Gwynn have won eight batting championships, registered more than 2,900 hits And achieved a career .344 average. Check this morning's Top 10. They're Right there again, challenging for what would be Boggs' fifth straight title and Gwynn's third in a row. Nothing in baseball today is more dependable than the consistency, of Boggs and Gwynn. They are true craftsmen who have honed and tailored their skills, eliminated weaknesses and turned hitting into a true art form. Boggs' career average of .354 through September 7 ranks fourth on the list for modern (since 1900) players, behind Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby and Joe Jackson. Just three American Leaguers have won more batting titles than Boggs. Only five modern National Leaguers have won more batting championships than Gwynn, and his .333 career average is tied for 17th on the modern list. He and Boggs are the only active players in the Top 20.

Career Batting Record The left-handed Gwynn, who won four NL batting titles during the 1980s, is best known as a hitter, but he's also a dangerous base stealer and an excellent defensive outfielder who has won five Gold Glove Awards. He joined the NL's San Diego Padres in 1982 season but was on the disabled list for the last month and he also missed the beginning of the 1983 season. In 1984, he stayed healthy and led the league with 213 hits and a .351 batting average. Gwynn led the league in runs with 107 and hits with 211 in 1986. He then won three straight batting titles, hitting .370 in 1987, .313 in 1988, and .336 in 1989. Gwynn won four batting titles in a row, from 1994 through 1997, tying Honus Wagner's National League record of 8. He also led the league in hits seven times. His .394 average in 1994 was the highest in the National League since Bill Terry's .401 in 1930, and it was the best in the majors since Ted Williams' .406 average in 1941. Bothered by knee, hip, and back problems during the last several years of his career, Gwynn announced at the 2001 All-Star Game that he would retire when the season ended. He hit .300 or better in 18 consecutive seasons, a league record.

    Tony Gwynn's Finale
The 2001 season ended with a flurry of activity as records were challenged and broken, races were decided, and milestones were met. In addition, two veteran superstars hung up their spikes, one an iron man, the other a batting champion. Tony Gwynn became synonymous with the San Diego Padres' franchise in his 20-year career. He led the team to two World Series and won eight batting titles. In 2001 he batted .300 for the 18th time in his career, breaking the post-1900 National League mark held by Stan Musial . And just as Musial's final game became an event, so too did the swan song of Gwynn. In more ways than one his final days in the big leagues were historic. In the next-to-the-last weekend of his career, Gwynn and the Padres hosted the Giants and Barry Bonds, who was making his run at the single-season home run record. Simultaneously, Gwynn's teammate Rickey Henderson approached the 3,000-hit mark. On October 8 the Padres closed the 2001 season at home against the Colorado Rockies. Gwynn, who had been suffering from aching knees all season, was not in the starting lineup. At the top of the lineup was Henderson, needing just one hit to become the 25th member of the 3,000-hit club. In the bottom of the first he looped a hit into right field and entered the history books. Gwynn was one of the many teammates who swarmed the field to congratulate Henderson.

The historic hit came six years to the day after Gwynn had collected career hit #2000 and marked the first time a player had reached 3,000 hits on foreign soil. The date was also the birthday of Gwynn's mother, Vendella. Gwynn's milestone hit came one day after Mark McGwire slammed his 500th career home run, and one day prior to Wade Boggs becoming the 23rd player to join the 3,000-Hit Club.
