Notes:
  • Two players to watch are Adrain Beltre and Gary Sheffield. One has a particularly nasty ailment right now, and the other is in a PR mess of a rather sizeable proportion. If someone asks me, "Voros, who is your number one sleeper this year?" My money would be on Chirs Donnels. With injuries to both Beltre and Hansen striking at an opportune moment, Donnels may get a shot at some playing time. He absolutely obliterated the ball in Albuquerque and backed it up with four homers in 34 at bats in Los Angeles... ...but one should be careful with the projections from Donnels and Cookson. The data we have indicates they both can pound, but we don't have a lot of data the last three years (I even used Donnels at bats in Japan, but he was hurt over there). At Cookson's age, I'd rather have him and Cookson has always hit even back when he was of prospect's age. However Donnels does have the better opening here.

December 4, 2002
On Wednesday, the Dodgers and Cubs continued this winter's trend of swapping bad contracts to allow for roster and payroll flexibility. Los Angeles got rid of first baseman Eric Karros and Mark Grudzielanek, while Chicago dumped Todd Hundley. The Dodgers also received outfielder Chad Hermansen and paid $2 million to help balance the deal financially. Karros, who waived his no-trade rights, is due $8 million in 2003 and will vest a $9 million club option for 2004 should he get 500 plate appearances next year. Grudzielanek was due to make $5.5 million in 2003 before agreeing to defer some of that money, and the Cubs have a $6 million option on him for 2004. Hundley has two years and $12.5 million remaining on a four-year, $23.5 million contract that has been one of the worst free-agent signings ever. Karros, 35, is coming off his worst offensive season since he won the National League rookie of the year in 1992. He hit .271 with a career-low 13 home runs and 73 RBI in 142 games in 2002, posting a meager .722 on-base plus slugging percentage. After eclipsing 30 homers five times in six seasons, he has hit a total of just 28 in 2001-02. Already a liability as a runner and defender, Karros has little value unless he hits for power. He also fell out of favor in the Dodgers clubhouse and never established himself as a veteran leader despite his tenure. In 1,601 career games, Karros, the franchise's Los Angeles career home run leader, has hit .268-270-976.

This story was published Sunday, July 31st, 2005 By Sports Network Jim Edmonds belted a two-run homer off Wilson Alvarez in the 11th inning to give the St. Louis Cardinals a 7-5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Edmonds finished with three RBI. Mark Grudzielanek doubled twice and hit a three-run homer for the NL Central-leading Cardinals, who took the final two contests of the three-game set at Dodger Stadium. Sunday was supposed to be an off day for Edmonds, but he entered the game in the seventh inning as a pinch-hitter. "You never have a day off in the National League, you just have to be ready to play from the sixth inning on," Edmonds said.

As some of you know this space is my moonlighting section. I haven't been able to post anything for a couple of weeks because I have been dealing with every kind of fantasy baseball league under the sun! Let me tell you folks, there are a lot of leagues and a ton of scoring systems. Some of you clowns really make stupid leagues, but that’s another matter entirely.
Ugh! One thing this job does afford me is to really get any idea of how serious fantasy baseball is, and how tough people feel with the power of anonymity behind their emails. Let me tell you as person who deals with those of you in cyber land, you people are OUT OF YOUR MINDS! We get calls at 2 AM; we get people cursing to high heaven letting us know how much we SUCK, only to tell us HOW AWESOME we are with the next breath. It is unreal the passion running your FAKE baseball team can instill. I can only imagine what the real General Managers of Baseball teams must feel like? Can you imagine if you had a crappy fantasy season you could be fired? Ha! That would be great! Seeing how Larry’s Corner League is going, I might be the first one to go. I am planning on posting the league draft results soon. I'd love it you all would rate the draft let me know if I had a good one in the 20 team league.

ST. LOUIS - Even after getting a home run, single and double in his first three at-bats, Mark Grudzielanek wasn't thinking about hitting for the cycle until teammate Albert Pujols began rooting him on. "He was saying 'You've got to do it, you've got to do it, you've got to go for it'," Grudzielanek said after helping the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-3 on Wednesday. "I didn't think the opportunity would come, but it sure did. It's weird how it happens." Grudzielanek became the first Cardinals player to hit for the cycle in nine seasons and Chris Carpenter equaled his career best with 12 strikeouts for St. Louis, which has won 11 of 12. Jim Edmonds had two RBIs for the Cardinals, who at 14-5 are off to their best start since the 1968 team opened with that record. The first four in the batting order were 7-for-9 in the first four innings against Victor Santos (1-1) while building a 5-0 lead. More on this story The Cardinals won their fifth straight over the Brewers, with their current streak beginning with a three-game sweep at Milwaukee April 15-17. It was the first game for St. Louis since closer Jason Isringhausen, who's 7-for-7 in save opportunities, went on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right abdomen muscle.
