81. Baseball Musings: RISP Confidence

Main April 24, 2005 RISP Confidence Reading the Bill James article this morning made me wonder if there was a way to study the situational hitting issue in a different way. I have compiled a database from Retrosheet of every play from 1974 to 1992. (Those are the years Retrosheet has complete seasons.) I decided to look at the data to see if anyone hit significantly better or worse with runners in scoring position over that time. First, I do not mean to say this is a clutch statistic. My opinion is that it is very difficult to define a clutch statistic. For every situation you name, I'll come up with a subset within it that's not clutch. As you eliminate more and more non-clutch situations, you end up with a very small sample size of real clutch situations for players. But runners in scoring position (RISP) is a nice proxy. I decided to study the group of players during that time frame who had at least 1500 AB. At 1500 AB, we're getting a good handle on the ability of a hitter. Someone who hits .300 over 1500 AB has a 95% confidence interval of .277 to .323. In other words, it's very unlikely for a .300 hitter to hit .260 over 1500 AB. So for each player with 1500 AB from 1974 to 1992, I record their AB, hits, RISP AB and RISP hits. I took hits/AB to represent the probability of that player getting a hit. I used that probability to calculate a 95% confidence interval for the expected number of RISP Hits given the number of RISP AB.

Here comes the pich from Mr. Tom Henke
The pennant is won, it's 1989
And there's a new goal that's burning in my mind.
Got a new glove for my birthday that year
Combine with a bat and now ya have no fear
I practiced real good, and ya I practiced real hard
I made a diamond in my backyard.
Playin' some baseball in 1989
And I say wow
It is just baseball, ya I think that I'll do just fine But I need help. I put on my glove and went to second base That runner was stealing, umpire called him safe So I went to the outfield for the rest of that game But we were the champs, we put the others to shame. Day 25
On December 8th, 1992
Kelly Gruber Was Traded to the California Angels for Luis Sojo

December 7th, 1992. 10:00 PM Kelly stands at the punch bowl stirring his whiskey straight up with the index finger from his right hand; he's looking around: sometimes finding sometimes dodging the eyes of the people. Making the place. 'You don't need Toronto, way more endorsements in California or Texas! Angels, Mets, maybe Houston in a three way deal?! You don't need the Toronto Blue Jays!' "Yeah—the wife and I drove down for all the playoff games this year. We just knew. Didn't you? It's just done so much for us! For Canada!" Fucking Canadians. He'd like to play some place warmer than here though, that's for sure. But it will be like starting over: new trainers, new dry cleaners, new hair salons, new checkout girls in new grocery stores. 'Angels, Mets, maybe Houston in a three way deal.'

Nov. 1, 2002 Coach Patrick Reid has brought his Texas All-Star Baseball Academy to the area. The new baseball school is located on Industrial Oaks off Highway 290 West. Today Reid runs the Texas All-Star Baseball Academy, coaching a sport he has played since he was 4 years old. His love for the game and coaching moved him to open the Houston academy in 1995 and an Austin academy this past June. In January Reid plans to start a non-profit company that will allow them to expand into all areas of Austin, especially east and south Austin. He says their goal is to bring the training academy at no cost to the economically disadvantaged, so that they can truly give everyone an equal and honest chance to learn and train in the great game of baseball and life. Striving to make a difference, Reid says he emulates baseball Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson who had the courage to stand up to ignorance and do what he felt was right and necessary at that time. TASBA is located at 5446 Hwy 290 West, Suite 309. Call 293-9762 to schedule an appointment.

Taken from the Cleveland Indians organization by the Toronto Blue Jays in December 1983 , Kelly Gruber spent time on the Jays' bench during the 1984 season before being sent to the minors. He had brief stints with the major league club in 1985, and was soon expected to take the third base job from the aging platoon of Rance Mulliniks and Garth Iorg , but he had a disappointing season after minor injuries and was used mainly as a utility player. Primarily a third baseman, he made appearances at second base and shortstop and in the outfield as well. SHOPPING

Early career
Kelly was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 1st round (10th pick) of the amateur draft but did not see time with the team. On December 5 , the Toronto Blue Jays picked him up in the Rule V draft. Kelly saw his first Major League action shortly after, playing in his first game on April 20 . Over the next three seasons, he split time between the Majors and the minors, eventually earning an every day spot in the Toronto line-up by edit
Best years
Kelly had his best season in , hitting .290 with 31 HRs RBIs and 14 SBs . The numbers remain among the most impressive ever posted by a Blue Jay. The relationship between Kelly and the team soured over the next few years, however. After the Blue Jays won the World Series in thanks in large part to a Game 3, game-tying home in the World Series Kelly was traded to the California Angels for Luis Sojo and cash. Kelly appeared in interviews to be very bitter about the move, feeling that he deserved better treatment from the team he had been so loyal to.

History of the World Series - 1992 While the 1992 World Series between the Braves and Toronto Blue Jays might have fallen just short of equaling the 1991 Series for sheer excitement, it was real close. Thisclose. This time, the Series participants engaged in four one-run games out of the six and the decisive game was an 11-inning thrill-o-rama that for taut drama would be difficult to top. The never-say-die Braves, who captured the National League pennant with a three-run, ninth-inning rally against Pittsburgh, showed similar resolve in Game 6 of the 1992 Series. Down three games to two but buoyed by the fact the Series had returned to Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, the Braves nonetheless entered the bottom of the ninth inning staring at a 2-1 deficit. Plus, hard-throwing Tom Henke, who had 34 saves in the regular season, was coming on to pitch for Toronto, whose bullpen was working on a scoreless streak of 15 1/3 innings. Jeff Blauser led off the ninth with a single off Henke, and Damon Berryhill advanced him to second with a bunt. Pinch-hitter Lonnie Smith drew a walk, putting the potential winning run on base.
