Texas Major League Baseball Wraps Up the Season That Wasn't
Out of Left Field
BY TIM WALKER
October 6, 2000:
Enron Field in Houston

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ... uh, no, it was just the worst of times. At the end of the 2000 major league baseball season, both the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers can only look for silver linings in dismal years. The principal good news for the Astros? They have avoided finishing their first post-Astrodome season with the worst record in baseball a position they commanded until August 25. They also witnessed the emergence of several quality young players and another superb season from perennial All-Star Jeff Bagwell. Oh, but the bad news ... the Astros' had an abysmal, embarrassing campaign marred not only by injuries but by sloppy play, bitter clubhouse sniping, and glaring individual underachievement to go along with deeply flawed management decisions. After trading away its best pitcher and best everyday player of 1999 over the winter, the team was ravaged by injury after injury. Though the team as a whole played much better after the All-Star Break than before it, the job of righting the ship will be a tall order for Houston's management over the winter. Houston's struggles have been more painful when compared to their recent successes. Astros manager Larry Dierker seemed like a genius while the team was winning its division each of the prior three seasons. In 2000, though, it seemed that Dierker could do nothing right. Along the way, he became a lightning rod for criticism from players who blamed him in various ways for the team's poor play.

Baseball sues umps on issue of discipline
NEW YORK Baseball sued its umpires on Thursday, asking a federal judge for a court order allowing it to discipline John Hirschbeck for telling a member of his crew not to warn a pitcher for intentionally throwing at a batter. In an eight-page complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, the commissioner's office asked for a declaratory judgment that its attempt to discipline umpires union head Hirschbeck, was not subject to arbitration. Baseball officials sent Hirschbeck a "warning letter" on May 10, accusing him of misconduct during a game on April 28. Ralph Nelson, a vice president in the commissioner's office, said Hirschbeck told the plate umpire of his game not warn a pitcher when a warning was required by baseball's rules. Nelson also said Hirschbeck generally tells his crew not to issue warnings without his consent.

St. Paul ends bid to lure Twins
ST. PAUL, Minn. The drive to build a ballpark for the Twins in St. Paul is all but dead after Mayor Randy Kelly and team president Jerry Bell said they doubted a deal could come together in time for a required referendum. The sides broke off talks Thursday when it became clear Twins owner Carl Pohlad wouldn't grant Kelly's wish for a binding agreement to move the team if city voters approved higher hospitality taxes to help fund a stadium. "Unless the Twins have a change of heart, it is very unlikely" a referendum will be held, Kelly said. Kelly said the Twins have until Wednesday to change their minds. But City Council president Dan Bostrom said, "Nobody is holding their breath."

June 23, 1998 Sammy Sosa has been on an amazing homerun tear in the past month, with 17 homers in June (tying Willie Mays' NL record for a single month) and 21 homers in 22 games. And you could argue that Mark McGwire's 1998 campaign has been one never-ending streak. Three years ago, Mike Benjamin set a major-league record with 14 hits (in 18 AB) in three games to raise his average to .447. According to Baseball Weekly , Benjamin had a .186 career average before this outburst. And before that 1995 season was in the books, his average had fallen all the way to .220, thanks to a 20-for-135 (.148) slump from June 19th to the end of the season. Certain types of streaks get a lot of attention: winning and losing streaks by teams, consecutive wins and losses for pitchers, save conversions, hitting streaks, and errorless chances come to mind. But I'm going to focus on the tendency of batters to get hot and cold during the season. To gather the necessary, Luke Kraemer (a Diamond Mind software engineer) wrote a terrific little program that put every atbat from the 1997 season in chronological order, then determined the minimum and maximum number of hits and homers for any stretch of X atbats, where X ranged from 20 to 250. Let's work through one example to see how this works. Barry Bonds had 532 atbats last year. That means there were 513 stretches of 20 atbats in the sequence 1 through 20, 2 through 21, and so on up to 513 through 532. In total, the program looked at 513 sets of 20 atbats, 512 sets of 21 atbats, and so on up to 283 sets of 250 atbats. If I remember my high school math well enough, that's a total of 91,655 sequences. The output tells us that Bonds' best stretch of 127 atbats produced 49 hits for a .386 batting average, while his worst sequence of 123 atbats saw him hit only .228, to pick just two of the more interesting runs in his season.

1999 Post-Season Review Texas Rangers
By Jon Dunkle
Edited by Tom Tippett
February 29, 2000 This article takes a look at how the Texas Rangers did in the 1999 season relative to preseason expectations. For an overview of the approach used in this review, and a definition of some of the key terms and statistics, please see the overview page called 1999 Team-by-Team Performance Reviews
Capsule Summary
Projected Actual Runs for 886 945 Runs allowed 808 859 Run Margin 82 86 Wins 87 95 Pythagorean wins 88 89 Placement 2nd 1st The supposition before the season began was that the Rangers would score a lot of runs and allow a lot of runs. They did both to a greater extent than expected. The offense finished second only to the Indians in runs scored as Texas led the majors in batting average and slugging percentage. The pitching staff, composed of an erratic rotation and a previously unheralded bullpen, allowed the second highest slugging percentage in the American League, but was not bad enough to prevent the powerful Rangers from clinching a weak Western Division. A dismal performance against the Yankees in the playoffs and concern about the signability of star Juan Gonzalez on a team which had the second highest payroll in 1999 prompted the Rangers to deal Gonzalez to the Tigers for a host of young talent. The Rangers find themselves in an interesting position of simultaneously building for the future and trying to remain competitive for the 2000 season.

"I was numb going around the bases. I don't remember much," he said Friday night after the Baltimore Orioles beat the Seattle Mariners, 6-3. The fifth-inning RBI double cemented the former Ranger's place in history. Rangers/MLB Rafael Palmeiro's stats The 40-year-old Baltimore slugger, who has 566 career home runs, joined Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Eddie Murray as the only players with 3,000 hits and 500 homers. In the interview room late Friday, Palmeiro tried to distance himself by noting that Aaron (755) hit nearly 200 more home runs and Mays (660) has him beat by almost 100. "Those guys belong in a group by themselves," he said. "I shouldn't even be near them." "I've never played this game for the fanfare, to get attention," he said. "I played this game because I loved it the very first time I played when I was 9 years old."
