History
There's a sort of myth that hitting for a cycle - a single, double, triple, and home run in the same game - is an unusually rare accomplishment, far rarer than a no-hitter. Actually, the two feats have just about the same rate of occurrence. There have been 229 no-hitters in the two existing major leagues, and players have hit for the cycle 237 times. (Players also hit for the cycle 18 times in the American Association, when that was a major league. I haven't been able to find a list of those players, however.) Two players did it three times in their career: Bob Meusel of the New York Yankees, and Babe Herman, who twice hit for the cycle with the Brooklyn Dodgers and did it a third time with the Chicago Cubs. Herman's two cycle performances for the Dodgers came in the same year, 1931. He's the only player to have done it twice in a single season in one of the modern major leagues. However, two other players did it for American Association teams: John Reilly, with Cincinnati in 1883, and Tip O'Neill, with St. Louis in 1887. One of baseball's rarest accomplishments to hit for the cycle with a grand slam home run. That's been done only six times in major league history, by the following players:

View From Lodi, CA: Baseball On Steroids
By Joe Guzzardi I am always reluctant to write columns that conclude that things were better back in 1970…or 1960…or 1950. For one thing, going back three or more decades takes a significant percentage of readers outside of their personal frame of reference. And many readers comment that the time has come to move on by replacing old favorites like Humphrey Bogart Ingrid Bergman and Willie Nelson with new stars like Leonard DiCaprio , Nicole Kidman and Tim McGraw. But when the subject rolls around to baseball, I’m sorry. The only kind of column I can write is the one that concludes, “Things were better back then…” What brings baseball to mind in the middle of December is, of course, the sad sagas of Jason Giambi, Barry Bonds and assorted others like Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa who have taken performance-enhancing steroids.

New-look Japan pro baseball
season opens today
by Wayne Graczyk
The 1997 Japan pro baseball season opens tonight with an expanded 135-game schedule, the opening of new domed stadiums in Osaka and Nagoya and-a first for Japan-a full-time American umpire among the total of 45 foreigners in the Central and Pacific Leagues.
The Central League gets the jump on its Pacific League cousins, staging lid-lifters this evening as the defending league champion Yomiuri Giants host the Yakult Swallows at Tokyo Dome, the Chunichi Dragons welcome the Yokohama BayStars for the first regular season game ever played at their new Nagoya Dome digs and the Hiroshima Carp play the Hanshin Tigers at Hiroshima.
The Pa League opening day is tomorrow, carding three day games with the Nippon Ham Fighters playing the Chiba Lotte Marines at Tokyo Dome, the Seibu Lions meeting the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks at Tokorozawa and the 1996 Japan Series champ Orix BlueWave taking on the Kintetsu Buffaloes at Kobe.
The 12 teams will each play 135 games, with the schedule expanded from 130 games, the norm since 1969. With five teams playing the majority of their home games at four domed stadiums, fewer contests will be rained out, and higher batting and pitching statistics should be the result.

Teams Players Foreigners ... Swallows Tigers Ballparks See a game Schedule Records ... Nihongo Hanshin Tigers history One of the oldest teams in Japan, the Hanshin Tigers have for six decades represented Osaka in that city's rivalry with Tokyo. Like politics and economics, Osaka's baseball has never been much of a match.
Founded in 1936, the Tigers started out as one of the strongest teams in Japan, second only to the Tokyo Kyojin (Yomiuri Giants). Prior to the establishment of the two league system in 1950, the Tigers had already compiled a franchise 730-472 record with four league titles.
Throughout the 1950s, with the Giants winning pennant after pennant, Hanshin finished in second place six times. Led by third baseman Fumio Fujimura, who earned the 1950 CL batting crown with a .362 average, the Tigers featured a strong offense.
While Hanshin had a strong pitching staff in the 1950s, it got much better the next decade. Masaaki Koyama earned 176 wins for the Tigers from 1952-63. With the addition of Minoru Murayama in 1959, Gene Bacque in 1962 and Yutaka Enatsu in 1967, the Tigers built the best pitching staff in the Central League.
In 1962, Hanshin compiled a team 2.03 ERA while Koyama earned the Sawamura Award with a 27-11 record, 270 strikeouts and a 1.66 ERA. Murayama, who had already won his first Sawamura Award in his rookie debut, backed up Koyama with a 1.20 ERA and 265 strikeouts. Together, the pair pitched roughly 700 innings.

A Red Sox lifer, Greenwell was the left field heir to Ted Williams Carl Yastrzemski , and Jim Rice . His first three major-league hits were home runs, the first a 13th-inning game-winner at Toronto on September 25, 1985. With a smooth lefthanded batting stroke modeled after George Brett 's, he finished third in the 1987 AL Rookie of the Year voting behind Mark McGwire and Kevin Seitzer . The next year he beat out Rice for the left field job and garnered MVP consideration when he led Boston to a division title, hitting .325 with 22 HR, 119 RBIs and only 38 strikeouts. SHOPPING

ROGER CLEMENS
The all-time strikeout leader in American League history, Clemens won six Cy Young Awards, the 1986 Most Valuable Player, and had a colorful and sometimes controversial career. A flamethrower, Clemens often matched his heater with a hot-temper, once being ejected from a playoff game as a member of the Red Sox, and later as a Yankee, nearly causing a riot when he hurled part of a broken bat at the Mets' Mike Piazza in the 2000 World Series.
As a pitcher, Clemens dominated hitters with a high fastball and a sharp curveball. He led the AL in ERA six times, won 20 games six times, and racked up five strikeout titles. He holds the Red Sox career record for K's and tied Cy Young for most wins for that franchise. After two Cy Young Award seasons for Toronto in the 1990s, "Rocket" was traded to the Yankees, where he haunted his former Red Sox employers by winning two World Series rings. In 2001, at the age of 39, Clemens won 20 of his first 21 decisions en route to his sixth Cy Young award.
