Log in Register Help …And Then There's Bonds by Mike Carminati Barry Bonds won his record seventh MVP award today garnering 24 of the 32 first place votes. That's not the amazing part. The amazing part is that not only did eight dolts not put Bonds first but one even had him third on the ballot. Then again, these are baseball writers after all. Hey, after a correct, unanimous selection of Johan Santana in the AL Cy Young, I won't be surprised if David Ortiz gets the AL MVP as a means of compensation. But back to Bonds: Not only does he have four more MVPs than the next guy, those "next guys" are Joe DiMaggio, Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Mantle, Mike Schmidt, Roy Campanella, Stan Musial, and Yogi Berra. Bonds simply has dominated MVP voting like no other player ever has. Here are the top vote getters in the Bonds era (1986 to 2004): Name Pts Max Pts % of Max 1st Place # Yrs MVPs Barry Bonds Frank Thomas Mike Piazza Ken Griffey Jr. Alex Rodriguez Jeff Bagwell Sammy Sosa Juan Gonzalez Kirby Puckett Albert Belle Chipper Jones Jason Giambi Roger Clemens Albert Pujols Mark McGwire Matt Williams Roberto Alomar Dennis Eckersley Manny Ramirez George Bell Jeff Kent Cecil Fielder
But Bonds has been on the ballot in "just" fifteen of the nineteen seasons in his career. Here are the men who have been 15 MVP ballots:

Ranking the teams
One of my favorite baseball-related features on ESPN.com is their power-rankings. Buster Olney has his pre-season rankings 8. Minnesota Twins: They locked up Johan Santana to a four-year deal; when small-market teams are able to retain their pitching, that's a measure of parity (but not much). … 29. Washington Nationals: Baseball's Bingo Long All-Stars have finally found a permanent home. It'll be a while longer before you can realistically expect them to win on a consistent basis.
If you just look at the rankings per league, the Twins would be fourth in the AL; The Nationals last in the NL. Posted by Christopher Wavrin at 02:41 PM

The steroid era: Re-awarding the awards One of the interesting side-stories to the Jose Canseco steroid-fest is the case of Mike Greenwell. Greenwell was the runner-up to the 1988 AL MVP race. Let’s let Greenwell tell it "Where's my MVP?" Greenwell told the Fort Myers News-Press. "[Canseco's] an admitted steroid user. I was clean. If they're going to start putting asterisks by things, let's put one by the MVP." … "I do have a problem with losing the MVP to an admitted steroids user," Greenwell told the News-Press, adding that not winning the award likely cost him millions of dollars.
Now wouldn’t that be interesting. Can you imagine the jar of worms that would be opened if MLB took away Canseco’s awards? All the awards attributed to all the people that Canseco named as steroid users would come into question. Think of all the records and Awards that McGuire, Bonds, Palmeiro, etc. have aquired… it’s daunting.

Baseball Fever American League Boston Red Sox PDA View Full Version : Red Sox All-time Team fenwayjeff 06-26-2001, 02:29 AM Okay Sox fans, let's have your roster for your all-time Red Sox team. Pick a roster of 25 players (15 regulars and 10 pitchers) using them however you like. This is much tougher than you think as personal favorites come into play causing possible bias. I will post my All-time greats and my all-time favorites within the next day or so. fenwayjeff 06-26-2001, 02:55 AM Here is my All-Time Sox team:
1B- Foxx and Vaughn
2B- Doerr and Remy
3B- Boggs and Collins
SS- Cronin and Garciaparra
OF- Williams, Speaker, Evans, Yastrzemski and Rice
C- Fisk and Ferrell
P- Clemens, Young, Martinez, Ruth, Tiant, Grove, Lee, Wood
RP- Radatz and Stanley
We will have Joe Cronin as the GM with Dick Williams as Manager and both Don Zimmer and Johnny Pesky as coaches.
I know I may have missed some guys like Conigliaro, Jensen, Dimaggio, Petrocelli, Malzone and maybe even Gedman. Please do not start with Manny. Pitchers too including Leonard, Parnell, Kinder, Lonborg and maybe even Eck or Flash Gordon. My all-time favorites are many of the gentleman aforementioned, in addition to 'Oil Can'Boyd, 'Pumpsie' Green, Mike Greenwell and current Sox Trot Nixon and Jason Varitek among others. Let me know where you stand and please non-Sox fans, nothing about Buckner as a late-inning defensive specialist. The Commissioner 06-28-2001, 10:32 PM

Look how close Gary Carter came to making it. What a disappointment for him. Personally, I'm bummed that Andre Dawson didn't make it. Sorry for you, bly, that your guy fell short, too. Despite the 1994-95 labor dispute, total player salaries have remained constant since 1994. But the distribution of these salaries has changed: the squeeze on baseball's "middle class" has reduced the median salary by over $100,000. While the Vaughns and Valentins can earn more than ever, experienced middle relievers and fourth outfielders no longer command million-dollar salaries, and smart teams no longer sign fading veterans to top-dollar contracts.

"Rat-finkism!" Don King's gleefully mangled commentary on the latest blow to baseball's image was a notable aside during his recent appearance on Jim Rome's nationally syndicated sports talk radio show. Beyond King's ongoing destruction of the English language, what's most telling about the comment is that his opinion was offered at all. The notoriously single minded promoter was on Rome's show to hype an upcoming boxing match between Ronald "Winky" Wright and Felix "Tito" Trinidad. Yet even King's maniacal salesmanship was detoured by the furor surrounding the presence of steroids in professional baseball, a reflection of just how widespread this latest controversy has become. Specifically, King was referring to former all-star Jose Canseco's book Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits, and How Baseball Got Big
