Michael Lewis Greenwell (born July 18 in Louisville, Kentucky ) is a former left fielder in Major League Baseball who played his entire career with the Boston Red Sox ). He batted left-handed and threw right-handed . Greenie finished second in the AL MVP voting in 1988, losing out to Jose Canseco , who pulled off the first 40 home run, 40 stolen base season in baseball history. Greenwell hit .325 with 22 HR and 119 RBI in 1988, setting career highs in all three categories.

Career
In a 12-season career, Greenwell was a .303 hitter with 130 home runs and 726 RBI in 1269 games . In the postseason , he hit .146 (7-for-48) with one home run and three RBI in 17 games. Throughout his Red Sox career, Greenwell suffered under the weight of lofty expectations for a Boston left fielder, as since the position had been occupied by Ted Williams Carl Yastrzemski and Jim Rice – all MVP winners and regular triple crown candidates. Although his play rarely reached the level of his predecessors, he provided a solid and reliable presence in the team's lineup for several seasons.

Notes:
  • A lot of people have written the Reds off and I think that's a mistake. There's a little bit of offensive punch here surrounding Griffey, and the Reds have been a notoriously good defensive club lately. Replacing Bichette with a terriffic glove man like Ochoa can only help things there. Michael Tucker is starting to show flashes of the player many thought he'd become. The Reds prospects are very young and thanks to the Neagle trade, very deep.

Visitors Dugout: Mike Morgan, the Nexus of the Baseball Universe?
by Jon Daly
A few years ago, some college students in Pennsylvania invented a popular game about the actor Kevin Bacon.  The object of the game was to start with an actor or actress and connect them with Bacon in the fewest links possible.  People are linked if they appeared in the same movie.  A “Bacon Number” was assigned to the actor based on the fewest links necessary to connect them with Kevin Bacon.  For instance, Telly Savalas was in “Kelly’s Heroes” with Donald Sutherland.  Sutherland appeared in “Animal House” (and “JFK”) with Bacon.  Therefore Sutherland has a Bacon Number of 1 and Savalas has a Bacon Number of 2. This isn’t an entirely new concept.  Since the 1960s, sociologists have suggested that every person is connected to every other person through an average of six acquaintances.  Paul Erdos, a prolific Hungarian mathematician, invented the Erdos Number.  Every academic who collaborated on a paper with Erdos was assigned an Erdos Number of 1.  Every co-author of these collaborators has an Erdos Number of 2.  And so on, and so on.  The Erdos Number became the forerunner of the Bacon Number. What does this have to do with baseball?  You can connect players to each other by linking them with players who appeared on the same team in the same year.  I’m not counting managers and coaches.   (This eliminates Don Zimmer as a link between everyone from Jackie Robinson to Randy Choate.)  Let’s link Roger Maris to Mark McGwire.  Maris played on the Cardinals along with Mike Torrez.  Torrez was on the ’77 Yanks with Reggie Jackson.  Mr. October finished his career as McGwire's teammate on the A’s.  How about Lou Gerhig to Cal Ripken?  You can link Gerhig to Tommy Heinrich, Heinrich to Yogi Berra, Berra to Tug McGraw, McGraw to Jeff Stone, and Stone to Ripken.  (Thanks to T. Scott Brandon for that one.)

Greenwell article
EASports Feb 17 2005, 10:10 PM I heard him on ESPN radio this afternoon. I would not call it "crying", but frustration is more of a better word usage. Would not you be pissed if you got beaten by a guy on steriods when you used your natural abilities? Greenwell could have made some serious money if he had gotten the MVP award. His career might have gone a bit different just by winning the award, as we have seen throughout the years of guys winnig the MVP award. Greenwell has a serious grip about the issue and he should. Are we to say Hank Aaron is "crying" if he decides to come out saying Bonds passing him is bogus or something along those lines? Feb 17 2005, 10:16 PM
radar Feb 17 2005, 10:24 PM
Graig Nettles was caught using a doctored bat, ala Sammy Sosa. Did altered equipment help him win a HR crown? How about Norm Cash in 1961. A guy who otherwise never slugged above .531 or hit above .286 had a SLG of .662 and an average of .361. Rumors of special treatment to his bat abounded.
What really bothers me about the steroids is that they are dangerous to the human body and to the emotional makeup of a player. It concerns me that teenagers find a way to get these drugs and shoot up so they can build their bodies like pro wrestlers and body builders and now even baseball players.

fast-talking best to solicit high bids for the Reserve
Grand Champion 1,275-pound steer, which is being led
around the show ring by the 4-H Club member who raised
it from birth. The bidding stalls around $3.25 per pound. The
auctioneer refuses to give up. Finally, a man in a white cowboy hat and a gray leather
jacket with red sleeves and a big Boston Red Sox logo
on the back, raises his hand. The auctioneer takes note of his bid for $4 per pound.
Sold. The man has his steer, or more accurately, the meat
from it because this is a slaughterhouse sale of 13 steer and 39 hogs shown during the Lee County Luv-A-Fair. ``This is fun,'' he says. ``The kids get excited. And we'll get 750 pounds of red meat out of it, cut up in T-bone steaks, hamburger, everything you'd find at the butcher's. It's all the red meat we'll have to buy all year.'' He is wearing a big smile, as if he had just hit a game-winning, ninth-inning homer in the major leagues.
