Movie Review: Life Of Hank Greenberg
Baseball's inspirational side revealed
By BOB THOMPSON

For a treatise on U.S. anti-Semitism in baseball, Aviva Kempner's The Life And Times Of Hank Greenberg sure is pleasant. That has a great deal to do with Kempner's light touch and Greenberg's likable disposition. Kempner wisely uses interview clips of the 6-foot-4 Greenberg, who died in 1986, generations after his glory days with the Detroit Tigers in the '30s and '40s. As is pointed out, the gentle giant from the Bronx was not religious but realized soon enough that he was a symbol for Jews, and acted accordingly on and off the field. Despite racial slurs and mean-spirited harassment during his career from 1933 to 1947, the first-baseman was a powerhouse on the diamond. The Hall of Famer had 100 or more RBIs in seven seasons, batted .313 lifetime, and nearly beat Babe Ruth's home-run record of 60 for a season, hitting 58 in 1938. As the docu underscores, his class and his cool outweighed his athletic accomplishments. As Jackie Robinson recalled, Greenberg was the first ball player to wish him luck during Robinson's breaking-the-colour-barrier season of 1947. Using recollections from the gregarious Greenberg, devoted fans and players, glimpses of the baseball past are sketched out in loving detail as we learn about the major leagues' first Jew.

Return to Camp Atterbury Main Menu Hank Greenberg In the 1930s Jewish Mothers would ask their sons: "What kind of day did Hank have?" Hank Greenberg, the Detroit Tigers slugger who came close to breaking Babe Ruth's homerun record, was baseball's first Jewish star. Tall (6'4"), handsome, and uncommonly good-natured, Greenberg was a secular Jew from the Bronx who became "the baseball Moses," an icon for everyone from Walter Matthau ("I joined the Beverly Hills tennis club to eat lunch with him. I don't even play tennis") to Alan Dershowitz ("I thought he'd become the first Jewish president"). Aviva Kempner's loving tribute is chock full of wonderful archival footage from the '30s and '40s and interviews with a self-effacing Greenberg and many of his Tiger teammates. Plus Mandy Patinkin's rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" in Yiddish! In May 1941, seven months before the United States entered World War II, Greenberg became the first AL player to be drafted into the Army. He was discharged two days before Pearl Harbor, but re-enlisted after the Japanese attack, making it clear that he regarded himself as a role model not only for big league players but also for Jews generally.

Excerpt
The long-awaited and highly publicized hbo original movie is obviously a labor of love for Billy Crystal. He has rhapsodized in City Slickers , Ken Burns's Baseball , and Baseball When It Was A Game III about how he began his love of the game at age eight when his father took him to Yankee Stadium, where he saw Mantle hit a herculean homer off the facade and he later had his program signed by the Yankee star. Over the ensuing years, Crystal cultivated a friendship with his hero, buying at an auction Mantle's glove and a seat from old Yankee Stadium, which Mantle inscribed: "Billy, wish you were still sitting here and I was still playing." As Crystal has stated in The Making of 61* , the preparation for this movie began on that splendid day when he first saw Mantle in action; he wanted to recapture the excitement of that occasion and to re-create the season of 1961 as closely and as lovingly as possible. In order to do so, he took careful steps to get it right. He "tried out" 1,600 extras as players for the various teams depicted in the movie; he turned the meager baseball skills of Barry Pepper (Maris), who had never played any organized baseball, and the nonexistent skills of Thomas Jane (Mantle), who had never even thrown or held a ball, into

(The other was the phenomenal Romeo-and-Juliet story called SOLOMON AND GAENOR.) Hank Greenberg, an amazing athlete, was the first Jew to make it big in the major leagues. A "lumbering giant" on the field, he was a 6-foot-4 first baseman who was twice named Most Valuable Player and who helped his team, the Detroit Tigers, win pennants and World Series. Although a few Jews had some earlier, smaller successes in baseball, they changed their names to mask their ethnic identity.

A Baseball Great and War Hero
by Seymour "Sy" Brody Henry "Hank" Greenberg was one of the first men in base- ball to seriously challenge Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs and Lou Gehrigs' league record of 184 runs batted in. Greenberg had a chance to shatter Ruth's home ruin record of 60 in 1938. He had hit 58 home runs and still had five games to play. But the weather was dismal and he faced several erratic pitchers. He failed in his attempt to hit a home run. Greenberg batted in 183 runs in 1937, failing one short of tying Gehrig's record. He did set a major league record of hitting two or more home runs in one game (II in 1938). Greenberg was elected to Baseball's Hall of Fame and was twice named the Most Valuable Player of the Year. Greenberg was born on New Year's Day in 1911. His parents had immigrated to New York City from Bucharest, Romania. He attended public schools in the Bronx, New York, and was on the baseball and basketball teams of James Monroe High School. Major league teams were interested in having Greenberg play for them. Greenberg's father turned away the baseball scouts since he wanted his son to attend col lege. He attended New York University on a baseball scholarship. His parents let him play professional baseball in 1930.

CAREER BRIEFLY:
Hank Greenberg was a lot larger of a figure than his numbers suggest. The first Jewish baseball star, Greenberg faced a lot of anti-semitism during his rise to the top of the baseball world during the 1930s, but he also provided inspirations to many Jews as well. He was a heck of a hitter by any standard or religion, winning two MVPs and leading the league in home runs four times. Of the entire American League, only Roger Maris has surpassed his 1938 mark of 58 homers, and Joe Medwick is the only hitter in any league to top his total of 63 doubles in 1934. He drove in an incredible 183 runs in 1937, one of four times he led the league in RBI. He was the first baseball player to enlist in the army for World War II, which took four years off his career. When he came back, he still had the power, but his average was down, so he retired at the age of 36.
LEGACY:
Hank Greenberg was the first Jewish sports hero, and he influenced other such prominent Jewish athletes like Sandy Koufax and Shawn Green. He also was one of the most dominating power hitters of all-time, and the fact that his career was cut short by injuries and military service makes his career all the more impressive.

Although he missed time through injuries, military service, and early retirement, Greenberg still ranks as one of the most fearsome sluggers in baseball history. The powerful righthander played only the equivalent of nine-and-a-half seasons, yet produced outstanding career totals as well as exceptional season marks.
