The Baseball Crank Rating:

August 21, 2000 Listening to Ken Griffey, Jr. whine about the pressure of performing under the constant scrutiny of insanely high expectations from fans, media, and baseball as a whole, one is almost tempted to sympathize with him. For a normal guy to put up with all that seems a bit much, especially when he's really so very good, and signed for something less than his market value. I don't blame Griffey although one should expect something of a pedestal when one is a product endorser and media darling. But then one might read one of Jackie Robinson's books, or go see a film like "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg," and realize what a true superstar is made of. It includes the stuff to rise above "pressure" like Junior will never, ever face. Hank Greenberg didn't get a lot of press during the recent retrospective hoopla of the All-Century team and picking a gazillion lists of all-everything players. There's probably two reasons why history is on the verge of forgetting Greenberg, really one of the greatest sluggers ever. First is his statistical line: a career 331 homers and a .313 average just doesn't seem that impressive in the context of 70 homer years and near - .400 averages. Second, Greenberg was just not truly controversial in any way. He was a good, steady guy who didn't eat 20 hot dogs at a sitting, guzzle champagne out of flappers' slippers, hold out in spring training for a higher salary, or be colorful in any particular way. He wasn't what makes a good "story" by the modern metric.

30 Second Bottom Line : Hank Greenberg was the Jackie Robinson of baseball for Jews. This documentary illustrates what he did to succeed, what it meant to the Jewish community, what a patriot Greenberg was and how he paved the way for Jackie Robinson. As important as the story is about Greenberg, the film shows much of what American society was about in the middle 1930's, leading up to and including WW II.
Story Line: As many Jewish supporters observed in the film, Jews were not known for their athletic skills. Hank was a hard worker and well over six feet tall. His love for the game and dedication to practice resulted in him being the first player to be named MVP twice, playing in different positions.
In 1932, there were very few Jews in baseball. Kids could get into the ballpark for free if they were with an adult. Baseball meant the game was played in daylight and always on grass. Hank played for the Detroit Tigers and in 1934 the city of Detroit was a hotbed of anti-Semitism. Many Jews would "pass" by changing their name. That concept is explored in greater depth in the film

We are not documentary fans. We don’t watch much baseball. We aren’t Jewish. Nonetheless, Life and Times of Hank Greenberg captivated and entertained us. Twelve years in the making because of lack of funding and already an Audience Award Winner at the Hamptons International Film Festival and the winner of Spirit Award for best Sport Documentary at the International Sports Video and Film Awards, Life and Times of Hank Greenberg is a wonderful and much needed tribute to the great Jewish baseball player.

Henry Louis "Hank" Aaron One of the greatest hitters of all time, Henry Louis Aaron (1934- ) made baseball history when he broke Babe Ruth's longtime record of 714 home runs. Aaron began playing sandlot baseball as an adolescent in Alabama and later played shortstop for one of the best Negro League teams, the Indianapolis Clowns. A quiet, self-assured superstar and unshakably consistent player, Aaron eked out his record, run-by-run, throughout his career with the Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves. When his scores threatened to obliterate Ruth's record, Aaron endured racial abuse and heated media attention. He maintained absolute composure under the tremendous pressure and steadily closed the gap for a major statistical triumph. When he retired from baseball in 1976, he had 755 home runs to his name. Ernie Banks With the addition of Ernest Banks (1931- ) to the roster of the Chicago Cubs in 1953, this cornerstone franchise ended its long policy of segregation. A U.S. Army veteran, Banks was discovered by major league scouts shortly after completing his military service. He proved himself to be an invaluable team member with strong fielding and superlative hitting skills. Between 1955 and 1960, the amiable "Mr Cub" hit more home runs than any other player in the major leagues and became the first man to win back-to-back Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards. With 512 career home runs, Banks is one of the top home run hitters in the history of the National League. By the end of his 19-year career, he was voted "The Greatest Cub Ever" by adoring fans.

About Calendar Grants Awards ... FILM NEWS HIGHLIGHTS The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg
It is probably safe to say that Jews have not been over-represented in the arenas of American sports. Yet in the 1930’s, Hank Greenberg emerged as a towering figure in the world of baseball—America’s pastime—a six-foot, four-inch slugger, a future Hall-of-Famer, and a decidedly Jewish presence on the baseball field. "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg," a documentary film by Aviva Kempner, opens with a hint of the complexity that Hank Greenberg embodied—Mandy Patinkin singing a Yiddish rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" while street scenes of young boys playing baseball in the Bronx in the 1930’s flash across the screen. The son of Romanian immigrants and a Bronx native, Hank Greenberg joined the ranks of the Detroit Tigers in 1933. Detroit at that time was dominated by two men—Henry Ford and Father Coughlin—both of whom spouted fiercely anti-Semitic rhetoric. Despite being idolized by his Jewish fans as a "Greek god" and the "Moses of baseball," and by the general public as "Hammerin' Hank," Greenberg endured considerable anti-Semitic slurs on the field. In one instance, he even had pork chops physically hurled at him from the stands. At a time when other Jews in baseball changed their last names to gain legitimacy, Hank Greenberg's name blazoned the front page of Detroit newspapers on Rosh Hashana of 1934 with the headline "Talmud Clears Greenberg For Holiday Play." Fans of Greenberg wanted so much for him to play that they consulted local rabbis to find an exemption. During crucial moments of that game, synagogue services around the city came to a halt so that the congregants could hear the latest score. The following day's headlines offered a victorious Greenberg New Year's wishes in Hebrew. Yet, while Greenberg is rarely remembered for leading the Detroit Tigers to victory that day, he survives in both Jewish and American lore as the hero who chose to attend synagogue on Yom Kippur rather than play baseball, setting the stage for Sandy Koufax's similarly profound decision in the World Series in 1965.

of Hank Greenberg Review by Elias Savada
Posted 11 February 2000 Written and Directed by Aviva Kempner G Kempner’s affection-filled effort to document the future Hall of Famer’s growing popularity amidst a solid Midwestern anti-Semitic ethic (in part due to the insidious likes of Henry Ford and Father Charles Coughlin) highlights the slugger’s hard-nosed efforts to rise above the small minds that sat in the stands and the dugouts, often shouting bigoted invectives against baseball’s first Jewish sports legend. While other Jews had played in the majors, Greenberg, a decent soul in search of acceptance in an assimilated society, was the first of his religion to stand up and be counted. It helped that Hammerin’ Hank had the patience of Moses and enough dignity (and a huge, lumbering frame) to face down his worst detractors. Greenberg was an inspiration to Jews and Americans in search of a honest, hard-working hunk of a man. Actor Walter Matthau comments that he was part of his dreams, his aspirations, while attorney Alan Dershowitz calls him “one of the most accomplished members of his religion.” And it wasn’t so much that Greenberg was an observant Jew. He wasn’t; although he had enough honor to realize that it was wrong to play baseball on Yom Kippur in 1934. The son of Romanian immigrants had agreed to play ten days earlier, on the Jewish New Year, after a Detroit rabbi had said that, according to his reading of the ancient Talmud, Jews had played games on that day and the right-hander could indeed take to the plate in the heat of a fierce pennant race. ABC sportscaster Dick Schaap adds a postscript later that the rabbi was perhaps more devoted to the sport than to his God, as the boys playing were not Jews but Romans.

The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg
Aviva Kempner's 1998 ode to baseball legend Hank Greenberg is an appealing documentary, although it's bound to appeal more to some than others. For baseball fans, it doesn't examine the lyrical, almost mystic quality of the sport displayed in Ken Burns' remarkable documentary series Baseball , which combines the epic sweep of history with various poetic touches. As a documentary per se , it's traditional in structure, and it eschews what makes the best documentaries work: the desire to cast light into darkness and investigate controversial issues or individuals. But as a love-letter to an American hero of a bygone era, it's generally entertaining, even if it lacks an edge. The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg offers a clean full-frame transfer (1.33:1) with audio in Dolby 2.0 stereo. Extras include a commentary with writer/director/producer Kempner, additional interviews, the trailer, and textual supplements. Keep-case.

A superb documentary about a great American Cons None Full Review Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot Aviva Kempner, a Detroit contemporary of mine, was delving into her family's Lithuanian roots en route to her first film "The Partisans of Vilna" when she got sidetracked by a handsome 6'4" home-run slugger. The slugger happened to be Hammerin' Hank Greenberg, baseball star for the Detroit Tigers from 1934-1946. And he wasn't just any old slugger…he was the first Jewish sports star and an icon to the people of his faith who were still struggling for American assimilation and validation . Greenberg's death in 1986, one day before the L.A. opening of "Vilna", triggered thirteen years of research - assembling film clips and interviewing teammates, family, friends, and fans - leading to Kempner's marvelous tribute entitled "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg." It was intriguing for me as a Detroit born and bred Tiger fan to see rare footage of this blue collar town hero, and the impact he had on a city which has seemingly forever been in decline. It was meaningful for me to see this documentary with my sister (on a rare visit from New York) and to learn that she once had a crush on Hank Greenberg! And it was also a shock to see my very first Little League baseball coach and father of one of my grade school friends as one of the interviewees!

  • Aviva Kempner's Oscar-nominated documentary is about baseball like Field of Dreams is about cornfields. Kempner efficiently covers all the bases of Detroit Tigers Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg's magnificent career with archival footage and talking heads, including family members, former teammates and baseball legends, broadcasters and sportswriters, and such unabashed fans as Alan Dershowitz and Walter Matthau. If this biography's style is not remarkable, its subject certainly was. Greenberg, the son of immigrant parents, was a beacon of hope to Jews. As one observer notes, baseball was a way of "showing we were as American as everybody else." To see one of their own succeed in the national pastime at a time of virulent anti-Semitism was a source of pride and inspiration. One lifelong fan, a rabbi, states, "He was the baseball Moses." Winner of several critics association awards for Best Documentary, this is a stirring film for all seasons.

Hank Greenberg by Adam J. Hakari
When Hank Greenberg, the famous Jewish baseball player who stood at an enormous 6'4", enlisted in the Army, his drill sergeant let out a string of anti-Semitic insults, citing that he didn't want any "Cohens or Goldbergs" in his platoon. Hank, a man proud of his heritage, spoke up and said that his last name was Greenberg. The sergeant looked at the tall, muscular man in front of him before replying, "I didn't say anything about Greenbergs." The whole of The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg Aviva Kempner's The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg feels a bit amateur at times, but its subject is one that other documentary filmmakers have inexplicably passed on for years. Hank Greenberg was a terrific ballplayer and a man who helped those like Jackie Robinson and Hank Aaron break through the sport's racial barriers. He may be gone (Greenberg passed away in 1986, at the age of 75), but as "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" is sung in Yiddish over the beginning and closing credits, Kempner invites the viewers of this tribute to Greenberg to reflect upon the story they just heard and ponder how many people like him exist today. By King Kaufman Oct. 31, 2000 I never really had a hero as a kid, but I did have a favorite ballplayer, Willie Davis. He was the first player I could recognize, and as the most exciting player on the succession of mediocre Dodger teams that greeted me as I came into baseball consciousness in late-'60s Los Angeles, he was naturally someone I cheered for and liked. But I didn't idolize him. To this day I couldn't tell you his hometown or much of anything else about him without looking it up. When I was 10, Davis was traded to Montreal. Suddenly he was an aging journeyman, bouncing from team to team. Montreal, Texas, St. Louis, San Diego, Japan. He was replaced in center field by Jimmy Wynn, who came over in a trade from Houston, no doubt breaking some young Lone Star hearts in the process. Wynn, the "Toy Cannon," had speed, power and charisma. He led the Dodgers to the pennant that first year and my friends and I loved him. The next year he hurt his arm. He was never the same. Two years and three teams later, he was out of baseball. If I hadn't known it already (and I think I did, somehow), I learned it around that time: It's fine to admire someone you don't know, but don't put all of your emotional eggs in that one basket, because that basket might get traded to the Expos, as it were, or develop bone spurs in its throwing elbow, if I may stretch the metaphor to the breaking point.

  • "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg" The great ballplayer was one of the "chosen people" in more ways than one but hero worship can have its drawbacks. By King Kaufman I never really had a hero as a kid, but I did have a favorite ballplayer, Willie Davis.
