In 1925, 14 year old Greenberg was a player on the Washington Avenue Annex Settlement House baseball team, which won the Bronx championship. Years later, Greenberg won a scholarship to New York University, but he quit after his first term to play baseball full time. Hank joined the Detroit Tigers in 1933 as a first baseman, and helped them win their first American League pennant in 25 years. The Tigers were champions again the following year, and Hank won the American League's Most Valuable Player award by a unanimous vote of the Baseball Writers Association; he won it again in 1940 after he had been switched to left field. After Hank Greenberg declined to play in an important game on Yom Kippur in 1934, Edgar Guest published a poem, the last lines of which are: "We shall miss him on the infield and shall miss him at the bat, but he's true to his religion - and I honor him for that."

    Henry Benjamin "Hammerin' Hank" Greenberg
Baseball Born in Jan. 1, 1911 in New York City. Baseball Hall of Fame first baseman and outfielder. Played for Detroit 1930, 1933-41, 1945-46, and Pittsburgh 1947. Played in 1,394 games. Had a lifetime batting average of .313. He was a two-time winner of the American League's Most Valuable Player Award. Greenberg's success story is a monument to hard work and determination. A man of enormous physical attributes, he had little natural playing ability. He literally made himself into one of the game's brightest stars. The eldest child of a middle-class Rumanian Jewish immigrant family in the Bronx, N.Y., Greenberg developed his athletic interests during his boyhood. He participated in many sports in high school. A Yankee scout was the first to spot his great power at the plate. Greenberg had many baseball offers but leaned towards the Yankees. However, the presence of indestructible Lou Gehrig at first base for the Yankees led him to sign with Detroit. He spent one semester at New York and then left school to pursue baseball full-time. Greenberg played in the minors for three years, beginning in 1930. While at Beaumont, Texas in 1932, he led the Texas League with 39 homeruns and was named the League's Most Valuable Player. As a result of that performance, he was brought up to the majors by the parent Tigers in 1933.

Henry Benjamin "Hank" Greenberg January 1 September 4 ), nicknamed "Hammerin' Hank", was an American player in Major League Baseball Born in New York City , Greenberg was not the first Jewish man to play major-league baseball. But by the end of his career he had become by far the best Jewish player ever, and the first major Jewish star. Only Sandy Koufax has had similar success among Jewish players in the 50 years since Greenberg has retired. Greenberg was subject to the most vicious ethnic taunting seen in the sport prior to the arrival of Jackie Robinson in , Greenberg nevertheless became a first-rank ballplayer and an icon among Jews in the United States. Starring as a first baseman and outfielder with the Detroit Tigers (1930, 1933-1946), and briefly with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1947), he only played nine full seasons. He missed three full seasons and most of two others to military service during World War II , and missed most of another season with a broken wrist. In seven of the nine years in which he was active, he was one of the dominant players in the game, beginning in

In 1947 the Brooklyn Dodgers broke baseball's color barrier when they brought Jackie Robinson into the major leagues. The same year saw the retirement of Hank Greenberg who was the first great Jewish superstar. Hank consoled Jackie that year, pushed him to persevere, and assured him things would work out for Jackie in the end as they had for Hank. Robinson listened, calling Greenberg "a high class gentleman."

DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION, there was no greater slugger than Tigers Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg. Breaking in with Detroit 70 years ago this summer, he powered the Tigers to back-to-back pennants in 1934 and 1935, capturing an American League MVP Award in the latter campaign as the Tigers won their first-ever world championship over the Chicago Cubs. Despite losing more than four full seasons to military service, and another to injury, he paced the junior circuit in homers and RBI four times each and carried Detroit to its second world title after returning from the Army in 1945. Yet, Greenberg is seldom mentioned in the same breath as other great sluggers from this era such as Jimmie Foxx, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams, even though his exploits not only equalled theirs, but often surpassed them in terms of offensive production.

    The first "Hammerin' Hank"
    By Nick Acocella
    Special to ESPN.com
"When Hank began playing in the minor leagues, a player from the South said, 'Hank, people tell me you're Jewish, but I can't believe it.' Hank said, 'Why?' And the other player said, "Because I heard that all Jews have horns in their head, like the devil,' " says Hank Greenberg's biographer, Ira Berkow, on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series.
For most of his career Hank Greenberg was presumed to be carrying the fate of the Jewish people on his shoulders. That the Detroit Tigers star ranked only below Jimmie Foxx as his era's top righthanded American League slugger has suggested to some that he might have been second to nobody if he had had to worry only about opposing pitchers. Hank Greenberg hit 58 homers in 1938 two shy of Babe Ruth's then record of 60. Greenberg took his first step toward the Hall of Fame when he batted .339 with 39 homers, 139 RBI and a major league-leading 63 doubles in 1934. It was also near the end of this season that his Jewishness became an issue on the sports pages when he consulted a rabbi about whether he should play on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Mindful of the pennant race between the Tigers and New York Yankees, the rabbi struck a compromise for the September games. He said it was okay for Greenberg to play on the happy occasion of the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah) but dedicate himself to prayer on the more somber day of atonement (Yom Kippur). Greenberg acquiesced, and responded with two homers that gave Detroit a 2-1 victory on the first holiday.

‘The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg’: the makings of an American Jewish hero
    September 27, 2000
    by by Michael Gildener-Leapman
director aviva kempner’s latest film The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg explores the life of an American hero during the 1930s and 40s. The film probes Greenberg’s impact as a baseball player, American citizen and Jewish icon during the earlier part of this century and the legacy he left for his fans. The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg is the inspiring account of a lanky Jewish boy’s meteoric rise from Brooklyn to the ranks of baseball’s elite, challenging Babe Ruth’s homerun record while at the same time facing anti-Semitism on and off the field. The film serves as a refreshing tribute to a severely waning American dream through the story of one man’s rise to the rank of “not biblical, but baseball Moses.” Local producer/director Aviva Kempner’s tribute is a nostalgic documentary about an extraordinary baseball player who overcame perhaps the most insurmountable obstacles to rise to become an icon of perseverance. Detroit Tiger’s Hammerin’ Hank’s accomplishments during baseball’s heyday measured up against those of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig and permanently etched his name among baseball’s greatest.

The Charge "I never saw Hank Greenberg play, but he was a legendary ballplayer, especially in Jewish households like mine." (New York sports columnist Ira Berkow) Opening Statement The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg Facts of the Case Hank Greenberg's baseball career is presented chronologically, on a season by season basis, utilizing a mix of archival footage and interviews with Greenberg himself and others. The Evidence The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg is a loving portrait of one of the stars of the 1930s and 40s, prepared with attention to detail and obvious enjoyment by Aviva Kempner. Kempner is a distinguished filmmaker who investigates non-stereotypical images of Jews in history and focuses on the untold stories of Jewish heroes. Hank Greenberg certainly qualifies on both counts. Her 1999 documentary on Greenberg is the result of 13 years of effort (largely due to difficulties in raising funds) and received numerous awards for excellence from various film festivals and associations of film critics. The reasons are obvious. If one would quibble at all about the documentary itself, it would be that Greenberg's life away from the playing field gets short-changed a little. That's where Fox's DVD comes in. The major supplement on the disc is an audio commentary by Aviva Kempner who fills in those gaps so that by the end of it, you have a really rounded portrait of Greenberg the baseball player and Greenberg the person. Kempner really knows a lot about Greenberg and she conveys the information with enthusiasm. A very fine commentary! Also backing up the documentary on the disc are 20 minutes worth of interviews that were not used, presumably more due to time considerations than anything else, as they're quite interesting to hear. Rounding out the disc are short biographies of both Greenberg and Kempner, Greenberg's baseball statistics, reviews of the film by several print publications, a trailer, a some background notes by Kempner.
