RALPH KINER
A powerful right-handed hitter, Ralph Kiner won seven straight home run titles before he turned 30 years old. Unfortunately, a back condition forced him to retire at the age of 33, but his amazing home run pace (second only to Babe Ruth), helped Kiner earn a spot in the Hall of Fame. After his playing career, Kiner enjoyed a long and successful career as a broadcaster for the New York Mets.

Baseball Almanac "The team was fighting for first place, and I was probably the only batter in the lineup who was not in a slump. But in the Jewish religion, it is traditional that one observe the holiday solemnly, with prayer. One should not engage in work or play. And I wasn't sure what to do." - Hank Greenberg B aseball Almanac is pleased to present an incredibly informative article about Hank Greenberg and Sandy Koufax how they were portrayed "In the Mainstream Media." Hank Greenberg and Sandy Koufax In the Mainstream Media Author: Brian Moynahan ©. Published: 2003. Appeared On: Baseball Almanac. Over the last one hundred years, many professional baseball players have made the decision not to participate in games on important religious holidays. Of the two major world religions (Christianity and Judaism) that have permeated the National Pastime, the one with the more noticeable impact has been Judaism. Since Lipman Pike first played for $20 a week in 1866, countless Jews have sought some balance between America’s national game and preexisting religious obligations. Two of these cases stand out more than most, however, largely because of the stature of the players involved.

Overall Coherence of Film: ****
Values You'd Want Your Children to Emulate: *****
Engages and Keeps Viewer's Interest: **** It is difficult today to grasp the impact that Hank Greenberg, star slugger for the Detroit Tigers before and after World War II, had on Jews throughout the United States. But back in a time when anti-Semitism was much more prevalent and overt, he was the first Jew (or the first to admit he was Jewish) to become a baseball starand to make the Baseball Hall of Fame. Particularly after the Holocaust, Greenberg's physical strengthin contrast to the images of skeletal, starving Jews in the concentration campsand his courage to withstand anti-Semitism in the baseball stadiums, roused Jews throughout the country to root for him and kvell (swell with pride). Anyone wanting to experience the impact Greenberg had, can live through it vicariously in the engaging, lively new documentary, The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg, which you can look for at your local Jewish film festival.

Baseball Fever General Baseball Hall of Fame Talk PDA View Full Version : 5 Tier HOF (v.2) - The Ultimate J W 07-08-2003, 11:27 AM When I first joined Baseball Fever (aka Baseball Almanac) a few of the older members got together to put divide markers on the field of 189 Major League players in the Hall of Fame (Ozzie Smith had just been elected). They started with the top 40, and voted on their Tiers 40 at a time until they had 29 left at the bottom.
Now that we will be adding Eddie Murray and Gary Carter, I figure it's time to revise the list with the throngs of new posters here.
I also declined making lists last time as I felt I wasn't knowledgeable enough to have an opinion. I'm looking forward to doing it now ;) .
Tier 1 - "The Ultimate"
These are the absolute top MLB players of all time. Record setters, championship leaders, ancient legends and icons fading to glory... they define the history of the sport.

Baseball Fever American League Detroit Tigers PDA View Full Version : Hank Greenberg Xsvfan 03-22-2001, 06:02 PM Does anybody know why Hank Greenberg retired from baseball after the 1947, at the age of just 36? He probably had some more good years in him. It probably wasn't the money, because he'd just become (I think the first) $100,000-a-year player (probably worth about a million and a quarter today...think about it). As far as I can tell, he wasn't injured, certainly not as badly as Joe DiMaggio was in 1951 at almost the same age. He wasn't hounded out of baseball due to bigotry, although he certainly faced anti-Semitism earlier (and, in his last season, gave some counsel to Jackie Robinson, who had it worse and wrote of his gratitude to Greenberg). It couldn't be that he was fed up with the game, as he went into the front office, and helped both the '54 Indians and '59 White Sox win Pennants. So why did he leave active play so soon? A dispute with management? A wife who wanted him to quit? An injury I'm not aware of?
Both Ted Williams and Ralph Kiner say Greenberg has never gottent the credit he deserves. Like DiMaggio, Williams and Bob Feller, he lost prime years to military service. Like DiMaggio, he cut his career short. He hit 331 home runs, a pretty good figure for 20 seasons, in what amounted to 10. (OK, he had Tiger Stadium for all but the last year, but still!) This was a sensational hitter who once hit 58 home runs in a season and got 183 RBIs in another, both pretty darn close to the records at the time.

ELECTED MEMBERS HENRY BENJAMIN "HANK" GREENBERG Sport: Baseball
Inducted:
Country: United States
Born: January 1, 1911 in New York
Died: September 4, 1986
His bronze plaque dedicated in 1956 at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York, begins: "One of baseball's greatest right-handed hitters." Hank Greenberg starred as the Detroit Tigers' first baseman-outfielder from 1933 to 1946 (in military service from 1941 to 1945), finishing his active career in 1947 with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
"Hammerin' Hank" had a lifetime batting average of .313, and 1,276 career runs-batted-in (RBIs), including an American League-leading 139 in 1934, 170 in 1935, 183 in 1937, 150 in 1940, and 127 in 1946. Seven times he drove in more than 100 runs in a season. His statistics are all the more startling when compared to the diminished number of games played in his career—1,394. Greenberg played only 12 games in 1936 (the year following his first MVP award) and went into the U.S. Air Corps just 19 games into the 1941 season (following his second MVP year). He was the first American League player to enlist for military duty in World War II, and by doing so gave four of his prime playing years to the war effort.
Greenberg also played in four World Series for Detroit, batting .318, hitting five home runs and 22 RBIs in 23 games.
