Hank Greenberg, the Detroit Tigers slugger who came close to breaking Babe Ruth's homerun record, was baseball's first Jewish star. Tall (6'4"), handsome, and uncommonly good-natured, Greenberg was a secular Jew from the Bronx who became "the baseball Moses," an icon for everyone from Walter Matthau ("I joined the Beverly Hills tennis club to eat lunch with him. I don't even play tennis") to Alan Dershowitz ("I thought he'd become the first Jewish president"). Aviva Kempner's loving tribute is chock full of wonderful archival footage from the '30s and '40s and interviews with a self-effacing Greenberg and many of his Tiger teammates. Plus Mandy Patinkin's rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" in Yiddish!

Film Synopsis
Music from the Film Director Aviva Kempner Press Quotes ... Booking Information photo / Hank Greenberg, 1930; courtesy of Greenberg Family Collection INTRODUCTION The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg is a feature length documentary film about an extraordinary baseball player who transcended ethnic and religious prejudice to become a hero for all Americans. Hank Greenberg's achievements during the "Golden Age of Baseball" in the thirties and forties rivaled those of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. As America's first Jewish baseball star, he also helped break down the barriers of discrimination in American sports and society. Greenberg was a beacon of hope to millions of American Jews who faced bigotry during the Depression and World War II. "Hammering Hank" Greenberg's career spanned the years when our country faced the enormous challenges of the Great Depression and World War II. He played first base and outfield for the Detroit Tigers from 1933 to 1946 and for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1947. Known as a self-made star and notorious for his hours of daily practice, Greenberg was recognized by sportswriters as "one of the greatest power hitters." In 1938, he achieved tremendous fame when he fell two homeruns short of matching Babe Ruth's record of sixty home runs in a single season. He was chosen Most Valuable Player in 1935 as a first baseman and again in 1940 as a left fielder. He batted in more than one hundred runs per season seven times in his career. His lifetime batting average was .313 and his career home run total was 331. In 1956 he received baseball's highest honor when he was voted into the Hall of Fame.

Before television made professional football so popular, baseball was America's only national pastime and a symbol of such American values as competition and fair play. Jews, African-Americans and other "outsiders" were not easily welcomed into the sport. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's breaking the major league color barrier. A decade earlier, Hank Greenberg crossed a different line: He became baseball's first Jewish superstar. Henry Benjamin Greenberg was born in an Orthodox household in 1911. By the time he reached high school in the Bronx, Greenberg stood 6'3" and was an All-City athlete in soccer and basketball, but his favorite sport was baseball. Somewhat awkward in the field, Greenberg chose first base as his position. In 1929, Greenberg was offered a contract by the New York Yankees but turned it down because the immortal iron man Lou Gehrig was the incumbent Yankee first baseman. Instead, after spending a year at New York University, Greenberg signed a contract with the Detroit Tigers. Greenberg spent three years in the minor leagues, working hard each day to improve his fielding and hitting. After being named Most Valuable Player in the Texas League, he was promoted to the Tigers in 1933, batting .301 and driving in 87 runs.

Career Batting Record A right-handed first baseman, Greenberg put up some amazing RBI figures during his career and once challenged Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs in a season. The 6-foot-3 1/2, 210-pound Greenberg starred in basketball as well as baseball in high school, then signed a contract with the Detroit Tigers that allowed him to enter New York University in 1929. However, he left school in the spring of 1930 to pursue his baseball career. Greenberg had just one at-bat with the Tigers that year and didn't rejoin the team until 1933, when he became a starter. He led the AL in doubles with 63 in 1934, when he hit .339 with 26 home runs and 139 RBI to help lead the Tigers into the World Series. Despite Greenberg's .321 average and 7 RBI, Detroit lost to the St. Louis Cardinals. He was named the league's most valuable player in 1935. He hit .328 that season and led the league with 36 home runs and 170 RBI. The Tigers won the World Series, but Greenberg suffered a broken wrist in the second game. The wrist was broken again early in the 1936 season and Greenberg appeared in only 12 games. However, he came back with 40 home runs and 183 RBI, one short of Lou Gehrig's AL record, in 1937 and the following year he hit 58 home runs to tie Jimmy Foxx's record for a right-handed hitter.

HANK GREENBERG
Amid the rising anti-Semitism of the 1930s, Hank Greenberg's baseball heroics took on symbolic meaning for many Jewish Americans. He was the first baseball star to enter the military in World War II, doing so voluntarily. On the field he overcame several injuries to lead the American League in homers three times, including 58 circuit blows in 1938. On the final day of the 1945 season, having returned from the war just weeks earlier, Greenberg hit a grand slam in the ninth inning that clinched the pennant for the Tigers.
