The Los Angeles Dodgers are clearly Shawn Green's team. Former teammate Mark Grudzielanek said of the slugging Jewish outfielder, and NL MVP candidate in 2002, "No question, he's definitely our main guy. He's a special individual." Green, an All-Star with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1999 and the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2000 and 2002, is, along with Philadelphia's all-star catcher Mike Lieberthal, the best of the current Jewish big-leaguers, and one of the best players in baseball. Following back-to-back 40 homer seasons, Green had a difficult season at the plate in 2003 as the Dodgers as a team struggled offensively. With new GM, Paul DePodesta, the Dodgers hope to put the miserable 2003 season behind them and compete in the tough NL West. After off-season surgery to repair his injured right shoulder, Green will play both right field and first base during the 2004 season. Through July 18, the Dodgers are 52-38 and in first place in the NL West. Green has played in 88 games is hitting .259 (86-332) with 11 HR, 46 RBI, and 46 runs scored. In September 2001, Shawn announced that he would not play on

Artifact Spotlight
This bat was used by Los Angeles Dodgers ' outfielder Shawn Green to hit four homers on May 23, 2002, in Milwaukee's Miller Park against the Brewers. Green became the 14th player in modern Major League history to hit four home runs in one game. Green joined five Hall of Famers who also hit four homers in a game: Ed Delahanty Lou Gehrig Chuck Klein Willie Mays and Mike Schmidt Green also hit a double and a single in the game, giving him 19 total bases - a new Major League record. In his next game he hit another homer and added two more the next day for seven in three games. By the end of the week he had hit nine homers with the bat, a new National League record. Green promised the bat to the Hall of Fame and sent it to Cooperstown after it was broken in a game. "It died a hero. Any pieces, anything that I've used that gets into the Hall of Fame is a thrill." The handle has a crack, but the barrel of the bat - a witness to history - remains intact. The Hall of Fame also has the bat Green used on May 22, 2000, to stroke one of the six grand slams hit that day - a Major League record. artifacts and exhibits in the Hall of Fame.
