American and Canadian Jews' love affair with baseball is nothing new. In fact, it's been going on for over a century. Baseball was by far the most popular national sport when most Jews immigrated to North America between 1880 and 1920. For many children of immigrants, playing baseball was seen as the first step towards becoming part of their new land. It is hard to call one sport "Jewish" and another not, since Jewish athletes have participated in practically every sport. But there is something about baseball that has captured the Jewish imagination. Maybe it is because the sport has so much history. Professional baseball began in the 1870s. Even a casual fan quickly learns that he or she can compare every player's statistics with those of past and present players. Many immigrant writers have described how they studied Talmud in the morning and baseball players' "stats" in the afternoon. Maybe, too, baseball is so Jewish because, unlike some team sports, the role of each individual is strongly valued. Each player has a strictly defined role on defense, with a specific area of the playing field to cover. On offense, each player gets his turn to bat and all the players and spectators focus on the batter. Then again, perhaps baseball appeals to the community simply because the object of the game is to score by "coming home".

Shawn Green: Baseball’s Rising Jewish Superstar
by Brian Berk Shawn Green is not currently a household name, but he soon will be. The six foot four, one hundred ninety five pound native of Des Plaines, IL is considered one of the best Jewish baseball players to come along since the days of Hank Greenberg and Sandy Koufax. The Toronto Blue Jays were so impressed by the right fielder’s ability as an amateur that they selected Shawn sixteenth overall in the 1991 free-agent draft. Since then, Shawn has amassed an impressive career, highlighted by his 1998 campaign. In 1998, Green became the first player in Blue Jay history to hit thirty home runs and steal thirty bases in the same season. In addition, Shawn compiled a .278 batting average, scored 106 runs, and drove in 100 runs. Green is also an underrated defender. Shawn is considered a consistent fielder with an excellent throwing arm. 1999 should prove to be an even better season for the budding star north of the border. Howard Starkman, Vice President of the Toronto Blue Jays’ Media Relations Department, placed Shawn in proper perspective. “Shawn came along very nicely last season for us. He is a key member of our team. Not only did he become the first Blue Jay in history to steal thirty bases and hit thirty home runs in a season, but he hit thirty-five home runs and stole thirty-five bases last year. As far as Jewish heritage goes, Shawn does not see himself as a role model. He never turns down an interview request, however.”

Shawn Green Emerges as a Star in the Big Leagues
by Mordecai Specktor MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - It's spring and the aroma of pine tar is in the air. (For the uninitiated, baseball players rub a schmatte coated with pine tar ontheir bats for tack.)
We've traveled to the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome at 34 Kirby Puckett Place in downtown Minneapolis for our occasional look at Jews in the big leagues. Coming down the stairs from the visitors' clubhouse is Shawn Green, who has emerged as a bona fide star at the plate and roaming right field for the Toronto Blue Jays. The 6-foot, 4-inch California native put up impressive numbers in 1998: 35 home runs, 100 RBI, 106 runs, 175 hits for a .278 average, and 35 stolen bases.
He's off to a strong start in 1999 - with 4 home runs he's tied for the team lead with 1st baseman Carlos Delgado - and could emerge over the long haul as the most potent Jewish batsman since Hank Greenberg.
"Last year was a real good season," comments Green, standing in front of the Blue Jays dugout as the Twins finish their turn in the batting cage. "It's a lot of fun to be one of the main parts of a good team, and, hopefully, we'll get to the play-offs and the World Series."

On this page: Wikipedia Best of Web Mentioned In Or search: - The Web - Images - News - Blogs - Shopping Shawn Green Wikipedia Shawn Green Shawn David Green (born November 10 in Des Plaines, Illinois ) is a left-handed power hitter in Major League Baseball . He is noted for his swing and his arm in the outfield. He is also one of the most notable Jewish ball players.
Early career
Shawn Green was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 1st round (16th pick) of the amateur draft and made his Major League debut on September 28 . He spent most of and playing in the minors, where he compiled impressive numbers. For the Syracuse Chiefs in 1994 he hit .344 with 13 HRs and 81 RBIs. In , his rookie season, Shawn started slowly but picked up the pace later on as he became more comfortable with Major League pitching. He started in 97 games that season, hitting 15 HRs and batting .288. The and seasons were very similar in that Shawn faced limited at-bats, wasn't trusted to hit left-handed pitching, and continued to produce only in sporadic intervals. He was, however, developing in other ways. He proved to be more aggressive on the base paths in 1997 than any previous year and stole 14 bases. He was also developing his upper body strength in hopes of alleviating the skinny kid persona which had followed him from the minors.
Best years
In , for the first time, Shawn was granted an every day spot in the line-up right-handed pitcher or left and he delivered by becoming the first Blue Jay to hit 30 or more home runs and steal 30 or more bases in the same season. The season was beyond what even his fiercest apologists over the previous seasons had predicted. Shawn had never hit more than 18 HRs in a season (Major or minor leagues) but was now showing the signs of becoming a true power hitter. He finished the season batting .278 with 35 HRs, 100 RBIs and 35 SBs.
