19 to 21
by ruz This week in the 19 to 21 newsletter, John Shiffert looks at pitchers moving between the bullpen and the starting rotation, including Danny Graves, Derek Lowe, and Byung-Hyun Kim. #29, July 6, 2004 By John Shiffert At first glance, this looked like another one of those “What Were They Thinking Of?” trades. After all, Bedrock had been the Phillies’ closer for three plus years, setting franchise records for career saves (103 – since broken by Joe Table Mesa) and single season saves (40 – since broken by Wild Thing Williams and Joe Table Mesa) and winning the 1987 National League Cy Young Award and making the All-Star team on the strength of a 5-3, 40 save, 150 Adjusted ERA season. No doubt, the big guy (6-3, 200 pounds) from Methuen, Mass., could pitch. And here he was, going to the Giants for a back of the rotation starter with a funny delivery and a 3-8 career record and an ERA well over 4 (that’s Mulholland), another lefty with a funny delivery who had only pitched in six games in the majors (that was Cook – actually, he and Mulholland were both pretty good at hiding the ball during their deliveries), and a third baseman with 10 games experience in the majors. Well, as sometimes happens in baseball, there was more to this deal than met the eye. First of all was the trifling matter that the Phillies just had the Greatest Third Baseman in History retire three weeks before this deal. Hence, with no Mike Schmidt after 17 years, they needed a third baseman in the worst way. (Maybe that’s what they got, but, we’re not interested in Hayes.) Second, the Phillies clearly weren’t going anywhere – Bedrosian only had six saves up until June 18, because there weren’t many games to save – and they needed to try and build up their rotation… so how much was a first rate closer going to help them, anyway?

Wilson Art? The Cincinnati Reds
by Mike Carminati Wilson Art? Well actually, Wilson has pitched four seasons in the majors and only in 2002 did he pitch over 180 innings (193.2 IP). As far as being a proven starter, he has only started 30 or more games in a season once (again 2002). Lest you think that Wilson improved in 2002, his strikeouts per nine innings dropped by almost two (7.08 to 5.16), his poor WHIP (Walks Plus Hits Per Innings Pitched) went up slightly (1.43 to 1.48), and his strikeout-to-walk ratio dropped considerably (2.29 to 1.66). Add to this that Baseball-Reference.com lists an adjusted ERA for him that is 8% worse than the adjusted average each year, and you get a sub-par pitcher. He is a serviceable fourth starter but no more. So why give him $4 M in this poor free agent market? The Reds are desperate for starting pitching. The fact that they consider Danny Graves a starter at all, shows you how desperate they are. Graves started four games last year. Those are the only four starts in his seven-year major-league career. He was 1-0 with a 1.90 ERA in those starts, but with such a small sample that tells you almost nothing. Here are the totals for the starting pitchers used by Cincinnati last year: NAME GS W L ERA WHIP K/9IP K:BB HR/9IP Danny Graves 4 1 1.89 1.00 5.68 4.00 0.05 Elmer Dessens 30 7 8 3.03 1.25 4.70 1.90 0.13 Chris Reitsma 21 4 10 4.07 1.42 5.06 1.65 0.14 Jimmy Haynes 34 15 10 4.12 1.48 5.77 1.56 0.11 J. Danny Graves officially a Free Agent By Melody on Thu Jun 2nd, 2005
When Danny Graves was first designated for assignment 10 days ago, there was discussion on whether or not the A's should attempt to sign him if they could get away with paying him the league minimum. Apparently trade talk with the Rangers and the Marlins fell through, because Graves has cleared waivers and now is a free agent. The Reds are going to have to eat up the rest of Graves' guaranteed salary, which, for the record, is another $6,250,000. Any team that does sign him at this point would only be required to pay Graves approximately $215,000.
So the question stands... Should the A's try and land Danny Graves? Naturally he wouldn't be the closer even with Dotel on the DL; he's just too unpredictable and we have Huston Street locked up for that job. But Graves could be a decent member of the bullpen, perhaps working as a set-up man. He certainly has more experience than Reames or Harikkala, and perhaps the A's can give him a chance to rebuild his confidence. The most logical argument as to why we should sign him is his potential to be worth decent money again within a year; if he performs well out for the A's, he could essentially traded away during the offseason for more prospects. Although a possible downside to bringing Danny Graves to Oakland would be that it may appear that the A's were trying to upstage Huston Street. It would look like Graves was bought in as a backup in case Street didn't work out, which might inadvertently affect Huston's performance and increase the pressure on him to do well, or lose

More Meyer Baseball: Paul Meyer's Weekly Power Rankings: 5/29/05 If you've grown weary of watching what passes for Pirates offense, imagine how the Houston fans feel about their anemic Astros. With first baseman Jeff Bagwell on the disabled list and center fielder Lance Berkman just back from offseason surgery and Jeff Kent gone to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Astros are mere shadows of the bunch that was one win from reaching the World Series last season. They scored five runs in winning in Chicago Wednesday, but through Thursday in 24 games in May they scored more than three runs in a game just nine times and were 7-17 in the month.

New contact lenses clear baseball's future
Posted: April 21, 2005
Brian Roberts first tried on his newfangled contact lenses about an hour before the Orioles' last spring training game in Florida. He ripped three hits on a day his teammates groused about the difficulties of seeing the ball in the bright sun shining from a cloudless sky. A longtime wearer of contacts, Roberts needed no persuading afterward to keep the new lenses, even if they make him look like some wild-eyed creature from a science fiction film. After a monster start he entered the week hitting .444 with five homers they might have to be pried away from him. Plenty has been said about performance-enhancing drugs this spring. Well, get ready for a new wave of performance enhancers, only these do not cause side effects and are not subject to suspensions. Known as performance-enhancing contact lenses, they were designed to help hitters pick up the seams on the ball better and to protect the eyes from the sun. Roberts, the Orioles' leadoff hitter and second baseman, is the only player the

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Graves was eligible for salary arbitration and would have been a free agent following the 2003 season.
"Danny is at the core of the good, young group of players we have under control the first few years of Great American Ball Park," Bowden said, "These players are going to provide our fans with an exciting brand of baseball."
Graves, 29, last season for the Reds went 7-3 with a 3.19 ERA and a team-high 32 saves in 68 games. He made his first 64 apps in relief, then finished the season in the rotation and went 1-0 with a 1.89 ERA in 4 starts. Graves is expected to fill a spot in the front of the Reds' starting rotation in 2003.
An All-Star in 2000, Graves has contributed to 117 of the Reds' 229 victories the last 3 seasons (51 percent). His 129 career saves is a club record for a righthander, and his 121 saves the last 4 years is the eighth-highest total in the Major Leagues. In the last 6 seasons, Graves has thrown 469.2 innings in relief, third-highest total in baseball.

Reds brass handled Graves situation poorly
By DAMIAN CRISTODERO, Times Staff Writer Published May 29, 2005 The Reds provided a terrific example of how not to treat an employee Monday when they designated reliever Danny Graves for assignment, meaning he is no longer part of the team. You probably heard this story. Graves yelled an obscenity and flipped off an abusive fan behind the Reds dugout after the fan, apparently upset Graves allowed five runs in a third of an inning in a May 21 loss to the Indians, yelled an obscenity. According to the Dayton Daily News , the fan yelled at the Saigon-born pitcher who attended Brandon High, "Go back to Vietnam, you slant-eye (expletive-expletive)."
