Aug. 8, 2005 08:55 AM Mark Grace is fighting mad. But he is not alone. Joe Morgan, Will Clark, Frank Robinson, Andy Van Slyke and many others are ticked off to no end. The steroids scandal that has wrecked baseball - no matter how Bud Selig spins it - is not going away. Yes attendance is up and the majority of teams are still playing in August for something and that is all good. But Rafael Palmiero just got busted for steroids and the fans' trust in the players has never been worse.
Grace is upset because he played the game the right way and he will forever be lumped in with the cheaters, of which there were and are many. Grace came into the big leagues in 1988 and he knew of players who were taking steroids then. He was around it; he was asked about it, he was offered it. But he balked at taking the drug. In his career Grace hit 20 home runs zero times. He drove in 100 runs zero times. In 16 years he had 173 home runs. But he was a hit machine. He had more hits than any other player in the 1990s and he finished with 2,445 of them. And every one of them was real.

Cleveland Indians' prospect had gay pr0n 'mistake'. : Jim Rome says "but a baseball clubhouse is one of the last bastions of bigotry and intolerance. That’s not going to fly. You wait and see what happens when he gets to the Majors. Not all of us have made gay porn and there are more Todd Jones’ and John Rockers than Mark Graces in big league clubhouses. More so than anyone wants to admit." Is there any way at all this guy can tolerate what is likely inevitable in a Major League Clubhouse?

WTF does Jim Rome know? He never played baseball. Baseball was one of the first institutions to break the color barrier. They'll come around on homosexuality too.

Student Received Signed Mark Grace Jersey at End-of-Season Diamondbacks Game
Holguin, a lifetime baseball fan, decided to move to Phoenix in the summer of 2001 after returning home from the military. Although he was not sure what he wanted to do, he had a friend in Phoenix and felt it would be a good place to start out. Once in Phoenix, everything fell into place. "Phoenix College has been a good fit for me," said Holguin. "Rene Delgado helped me out a lot, she really got the ball rolling for me." "Randy Johnson is my favorite player," said Holguin, "and I have been following Mark Grace since he was with the Cubs." "The crowd was yelling ‘he got it!’ and camera and media people were surrounding me," said Holguin. "I was nervous, excited and didn’t know what to say! It was an unbelievable experience." This amazing, once in a lifetime experience has changed Holguin’s life forever. Not only can he use the jersey as a financial investment for the future if that’s what he decides to do, he is recognized on the street as ‘the guy who won Mark Grace’s jersey.’ "My life is like a roller coaster," said Holguin. "It seems like whenever I’m down, something comes along to pick me back up. I am now a firm believer that anything can happen, because it happened to me!"

STATE OF GRACE
With the 2000 Cubs a study in rebuilding, Newcity checks in on the team's gold standard, Mark Grace. Sam Weller Mark Grace looks like hell. It's early morning in Mesa, Arizona, where the Chicago Cubs have their spring training facility, HoHoKam Park. The sun is but a few hours old, arriving on the desert horizon in a splash of pink and violet and blue magnificence. Heat shimmers like a swaying belly dancer from the blacktop parking lot of the ballpark. Already, the mercury on the thermometer quivers toward the high 80s. It's gonna be a hot one. Mark Grace arrived on the baseball scene in 1985, more bloop single than Waveland Avenue round tripper. After a monstrous year of ball with the San Diego State University Aztecs, leading his team with a .395 batting average, he was quietly selected by the Chicago Cubs in the twenty-fourth round of the free-agent draft. To this day, Grace's college baseball manager, Jim Dietz, is dumbfounded as to why Grace sat so long in the draft before getting chosen. Dietz knows the game, he's captained the Aztecs for the last twenty-nine years, managing winning seasons for twenty-two. Jim Dietz is a member of a select club of collegiate head coaches who have garnered more than 1,000 victories during their careers. He has churned out scores of pro ball players, like Tony Gwynn and 1998's National League Rookie-of-the-Year runner-up, Travis Lee. Tallied up, thirty former Dietz proteges are currently in the bigs. Dietz never had a doubt about Grace's superstar potential.

Mark Grace Retires After 16 Seasons
Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Mark Grace closes his eyes as he ponders a question during a news conference Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, in Phoenix, where he announced his retirement from baseball following the 2003 season. The season ends Sunday. (AP Photo/Roy Dabner) Mark Grace, a career .303 hitter and one of the most likable players in baseball, will retire at the end of his 16th major league season. His announcement at a news conference Friday at Bank One Ballpark came as no surprise after the 39-year-old first baseman mostly sat and watched throughout this season. "I've come to tell you guys you'll no longer see me uglying up a clubhouse anymore as a player," Grace said. "I'm going to take it on home."

94. Baseball Fever - Mark Grace, A HOFer?

Baseball Fever General Baseball Hall of Fame Talk PDA View Full Version : Mark Grace, a HOFer? baseball junkie 02-21-2003, 11:34 PM I saw a similar thread regarding Will "the Thrill" Clark posted recently and I'm wondering what everybody thinks about Mark Grace's shot at induction into Cooperstown. Grace has racked up relatively impressive numbers over his career: .305 BA, .829 OPS, 2,418 hits, 170 HR, 506 doubles, 1,059 BB, four Gold Gloves and a championship ring with Arizona in 2001.
He lacks the gaudy power numbers of some of his contemporaries: Mark McGwire, Fred McGriff, Rafael Palmeiro, Jeff Bagwell. But, he was likely the best defensive player of the lot and an excellent post-season player, posting a .329 BA and a .909 OPS in 25 post-season games.
So what does everybody think? Will Mark ever grace the Hall with his presence?
Personally, I hope he does. He's one of the few class acts in pro sports today. Sandman 02-22-2003, 05:42 AM  my guess: probably not Kroxquo 02-22-2003, 06:47 AM You said it yourself - he lacks the power numbers. If he played any other position with those numbers he'd have a much better chance, but Ib is known as a power position. I agree - class act, vastly underrated, but I don't think Cooperstown is in his future.
