When the Orioles traded shortstop Luis Aparicio after the 1967 season, they replaced him with his roommate, Belanger. The slender "Blade" didn't relinquish the position until 1982. An eight-time Gold Glove winner, he played in 43 postseason games during a decade of strong Baltimore teams and holds several ALCS defensive records for shortstops. Seldom spectacular, Belanger rarely fielded a ball one-handed or sidearmed a throw, but he moved around short with sure-handed ease and grace. Although an unimpressive hitter, he had the distinction of swatting a home run in the first ALCS game played, versus Minnesota (10/4/69). That year was his best offensively, as he hit .287 with 50 RBI.

The Ex-Cub Factor. Ignore It At Your Own Risk.
The phrase "Ex-Cub factor" has been thrown around quite a bit, often incorrectly. For example, Bill Madden took a swing at it, and missed , in the Daily News. Since you've come to this page, though, you obviously want to know the straight scoop, and I'm just the guy to give it to you. After all, that's what the New York Times did, and they got it right. The Ex-Cub Factor was originally coined by writer and Cub fan Ron Berler, who wrote an article in 1981 stating that since the Yankees of that season had five ex-Cubs on their roster, they were doomed to lose the World Series if they got there. Chicago newspaper legend Mike Royko picked up on the factor early on, and was a tireless champion of it, especially after Berler's 1981 prediction turned out to be right, as the Yanks lost to the Dodgers in six games. Up until 2001, the curse of the ex-Cub had been almost complete. Since the Cubs last won the NL pennant in 1945, only once had a team with three or more ex-Cubs won the World Series. That was the 1960 Pirates, and Berler even managed to explain that anomaly away in his article. In 2001, though, the Arizona Diamondbacks won the championship with a healthy contingent of ex-Cubs: Mark Grace, Luis Gonzalez, Mike Morgan, and Miguel Batista. It would appear that the curse has been broken, and Mark Grace even said as much during a post-game interview. In response, all I can say is it's pretty interesting that the World Series to which that one had most been compared is the 1960 Series, won by the Pirates. In both cases, the National League team beat the New York Yankees in the bottom of the 9th inning of the 7th game of the Series. Plus, almost as soon as Grace said that, the Diamondbacks became bad. Really bad. Coincidience? Or SOMETHING MORE?

Posted on Oct 11, 2004 at 3:35 PM
Comments I know not whether Grace will be a good manager, but i do know that he would have to be a better manager than an announcer. My only lasting memory of Mark Grace as a Cub is wondering how many more years we have to suffer through with grace as our 1st baseman. I kept thinking, as early as 1990, that THIS was going to be his last season as a Cub. Then in 1991 I thought THIS was going to be the last season for him as a Cub and then 1992 hit and i knew for a fact that this absolutely had to be the final season for mark grace in a Cubs uniform. By 1993, I only dreamed of the day Grace would finally leave the city of Chicago. Finally, it did happen, but unfortunately it happened about 13 years too late. The quiet star of the Chicago Cubs in the 1990s and now the Arizona Diamondbacks, Mark Grace is a smooth-fielding, good hitting first baseman. He batted over .300 for the fifth straight season in 1999, the ninth time in his 12-year career. With over 2200 hits under his belt, Grace is on pace to reach the 3000-hit mark in 5 or 6 more seasons. He is a .308 career hitter and reached 1000 career RBIs in 2000, his final season with Chicago. He collected more hits (1754) and doubles (364) than anyone in the majors during the decade of the 1990s. Grace is a three-time All-Star, a four-time Gold Glove winner, and was the runner-up in 1988 Rookie of the Year balloting to Cincinnati Reds third baseman Chris Sabo.

March 2005 Collector of the Month Award
Congratulations to Brad Wackerlin of Lake in the Hills, IL for being named as the March 2005 Collector of the Month! The TCC Collector of the Month Award recognizes collectors for their contribution to the trading card hobby and their demonstrated interest in the hobby. Brad has been collecting trading cards ever since he bought his first pack of Topps baseball cards in 1980 when he was just 8. For over 25 years, he has collected baseball and hockey cards. As a lifelong Cubs fan, he grew up idolizing Ryne Sandberg, Andre Dawson and Mark Grace. However, Grace has been Brad's favorite player ever since he came up as a rookie in 1988. Why? According to Brad, "Mark Grace was a throwback, 'old-school' player. He played the game the old-fashioned way and gave it his all. He was consistency defined: an above .300 average, gold-glove defense and a dirty uniform all were staples of his game." Nowadays, card companies and their various sets come and go each year. There simply is no way to collect everything. Combining his admiration of Grace with this understanding, Brad began to focus on collecting Mark Grace cards. By specializing his collecting, he was able to see the set designs for everything that was available, but only had to buy one card from each set. Of course, he went for all the Grace inserts too - making the task tougher.
