Watkins Receives 2004 Babe Ruth
Baseball Volunteer of the Year Award
Selected from over 1 million volunteers throughout the United States and Canada, Watkins was chosen to receive this prestigious award because of his outstanding contributions to the Babe Ruth Baseball program and the youth it represents. Under Watkins' leadership, Southern Indiana continues to grow in leagues and teams. His enthusiasm for the program is highly contagious. Watkins is committed to making sure all potential baseball participants in Southern Indiana are given the opportunity to play. He continually reminds the leagues and commissioners in his state that the most important level of play is local league play. "The 'Lefty Gomez Volunteer of the Year Award' is the highest award bestowed in Babe Ruth Baseball," said Babe Ruth President/CEO Ron Tellefsen. "Its recipient must embody the spirit of the Babe Ruth League philosophy, which is to provide the best possible sports experience for every child that has the desire to play. Mark Watkins certainly exemplifies this philosophy."

Lefty always said it was the volunteer who was the backbone in making Babe Ruth Baseball the number one amateur baseball program in the world.

"All his well-known civic and charitable good deeds, his reputation as a clean player, were shoved into the pot to counterbalance the charge, made by Jose Canseco, that Canseco had injected Palmeiro with steroids on many occasions when they were teammates. Canseco wrote the accusation in a book. Then he swore to it before Congress. And Palmeiro denied it utterly, sitting just a few feet from Canseco."
"Of all the players in baseball, the least likely man to be caught cheating with steroids this season would be Palmeiro, right? Even if he had used them every day of his career, he would stop now, because anyone in their right mind would cease and desist."
"Yet, in one of the most unexpected announcements ever made in baseball, Palmeiro has been caught, suspended and has actually admitted to using steroids this season. Palmeiro simply claims that he has no idea how they got in his body." 8-05

THE TRIPLE CROWN Even the casual sports fan must get excited about the prospect of an athlete achieve the Triple Crown. There is even majesty about its name. The athlete who reaches for that exalted position this weekend is the race horse Smarty Jones (not to be confused with the former Mets outfielder Cleon Jones). The Triple Crown of horse racing for three-year-olds (colts, fillies, and geldings) is the winning of the three racing jewels-Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes. Only 11 horses have captured the Triple Crown (see the top of the 6th for all the winners), while 42 others have finished only one win shy of the honor. Sir Barton was the first Triple Crown winner in1919 the last horse to win it was Affirmed in 1978. If 1978 seems like a long time ago to you as you dance in your head to the music of “Night Fever” by the Bee Gees and “You Light Up My Life” by Debby Boone, think how long it has been since you were able to celebrate baseball’s last hitting Triple Crown. Were you slow dancing to Lulu’s “To Sir With Love”? Or just listening to the Turtles being “Happy Together”?

Bench: Dear Sports Freak:
Why is the Buffalo Bills’ nickname the "Bills"?
Ohio, Ohio? That reminds me of the little tune my daddy used to sing at the dinner table: "It’s round on the ends and hi in the middle, it’s O-hi-O!" Sorry. Daddy was a tad odd. The Buffalo Bills are nickamed Bills because only players named Bill are allowed by law to play for Buffalo. Or it’s because the team has yet to win a Super Bowl in four tries. "The Bills are due!" say their fans. The actual (as in "real") reason is that the pro All-America Football Conference began play in 1946 with a team in Buffalo named the Bisons. In 1947, a contest was held to rename them. The winning entry claimed that the team’s owner, Frontier Oil, was "opening a new frontier in sports in Western New York," so the team should be called the "Bills" after the famous western frontiersman, Buffalo Bill Cody. The AAFC went out of business after the 1949 season. When Buffalo was given an American Football League (AFL) franchise in 1960, it took the name of its old AAFC team. (The AFL merged with the NFL in 1970.)
