LEFTY GOMEZ
Years before Joe DiMaggio was signed by the Yankees out of San Francisco, the Bay Area produced Vernon Louis Gomez, a talented and colorful left-handed hurler. "Lefty" starred for the Yankees during the 1930s and early 1940s, teaming with Red Ruffing to form one of the best pitching duos in baseball history. Gomez posted a 6-0 record in the Fall Classic, winning five rings with the Yankees. Originally a hard thrower, Gomez suffered arm injuries in 1933, 1936 and 1939, eventually re-tooling himself as a finesse pitcher. He enjoyed a 165-89 record for the Yankees for the decade of the 1930s, finishing in the top ten in MVP voting three times.

FEATURE
Johnson and Schilling Rank Among the Greatest Duos Ever
This feature was written by Dan Holmes, in September 2002
As this is written, Arizona left-hander Randy Johnson (23-5) has surpassed the 300-strikeout level for a record fifth consecutive season while his teammate Curt Schilling boasts a 23-6 record and the fourth best ERA in the National League. The right-handed Schilling has put up 303 K's, placing him close on the heels of the "Big Unit." Combined, the two pitchers are 46-11 with a 2.71 ERA, vaulting the Diamondbacks to the top of the NL West once again. Without Johnson and Schilling, the 2002 D-Backs would be drifting somewhere between the Padres and Rockies.
Impressively, Johnson and Schilling have posted a combined 113-35 (.764) record for Arizona since Schilling arrived in the desert after a 2000 trade. Over that span the rest of the Arizona staff has limped in with a .478 winning percentage.
So, in Johnson and Schilling, do the D-Backs have the best lefty/right pitching duo in baseball history?

Related Info Lefty Gomez's career stats and highlights Lefty Gomez's biography in Spanish. As a pitcher for the New York Yankees in the 1930s, Baseball Hall of Famer Vernon "Lefty" Gómez (#11) was a major force in helping the Yankees win five American League Pennants and five World Series Championships. The Yankees purchased Lefty Gomez from his hometown San Francisco Seals in 1929 for $35,000. Two years later the slender 6'2" Gomez with his high leg kick and smoking fastball won 21 games for the Yankees with the support of teammates like co-members of the Hall of Fame Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio. After a winning game the outspoken Gomez was quoted saying: "I want to thank all my teammates who scored so many runs and Joe DiMaggio, who ran down so many of my mistakes." Along with right-hander Red Ruffing this lefty-righty combination was the core of the pitching staff in the 1930's.

http://www.cmgworldwide.com/baseball/gomez/
It is hard to judge whether Vernon Gomez is better known as the fire-throwing left-hander of the successful Yankees teams of the 1930s, or as the man that made clowning around the diamond famous. "El Goofo" as he was called in his native tongue, pitched his way into five World Series. He set a record in World Series competition by recording six consecutive victories without a loss. Over his 14-year career, he won 20 games four times, led the league in wins twice, and won the American League strikeout title three times. In 1972, Lefty joined many of his teammates from the Yankees in baseball’s Hall of Fame.
