Notes:
  • A comeback from Travis Lee could help a suddenly young Phillies lineup immensely. I consider Jimmy Rollins to be one of the better prospects around. All he needs is for his team and his team's fans to show a little patience with him while he's still young and improving, and the Phillies should have a very nice player. His abilities look an awful like those of Edgar Renteria. The Phillies have cornered the market on Brian Hunters. a lot better than currently projected to be any good.

For a time he was probably the only starting center-fielder in MLB that could wander around his local college campus (and alma mater) and only be recognized by 4-5 people all day. Now Leading Off
for the Phillies: Doug Glanville

The day after we caught up with Doug Glanville, EAS'92, at the Phillies' spring-training camp in Clearwater, Fla., The Philadelphia Inquirer ran a story that began: "Lenny Dykstra or Doug Glanville in center? The Phillies' manager is agonizing over it." Three days later, the headline read: "Fallout hits Phillies camp," and an Inquirer columnist was gleefully describing how he had "heard the new kid in town, Doug Glanville, stand at his locker and joke that he'd ruled out trying to resolve this mess by pulling a Tonya Harding." Actually, that same columnist added, "Glanville has been as patient and rational as a guy could be. He knows that no matter who plays opening day, the future still belongs to him."
As it turns out, the future is now. By the time Dykstra's surgically-repaired back finally gave out on him in the third week of March, prompting him to suggest that his retirement was imminent, Glanville had already dazzled his new team with his hitting and fielding. Halfway through the spring-training season, he was hitting a lusty .353 and had made some great catches in center. ("Spectacular," was the verdict of manager Terry Francona after one running catch. "That's why we got him. What he can do in center field, we haven't seen in a while.") After a brilliant career at Penn that included a spot on the GTA Academic All-America First Team, Glanville was signed in the first round of the 1991 draft by the Chicago Cubs. He did his time in the minors, riding the buses and learning how to hit the professional curve ball, and after a fair rookie year in 1996, when he hit .241, he turned it up a few notches, hitting .300 last year, stealing 19 bases, and impressing just about everyone with his quick, fluid defense.

I will be in touch more often with you folks now that we are less than six weeks out. After I have all your info I will send out invoices. Michelle ('03) was a welcome addition to our trip last year. She's great fun and when you look in Webster's under Cub Fan she is listed. You can see her in the JapanBall.com photo gallery pictured with one of the Seven Dwarfs, a Hanshin Tigers fan, and showing us a Yokohama Stadium vendor cart. She is also a lawyer and, because we want to keep such a lawyer on our side, we have made her the Official Lawyer of JapanBall.com. She's got one of the greatest law practices ever because it is such that it allows her time to travel to see baseball. She just wrote the following, which is such a good story that I wanted to share it with you. It is Sunday and I am in Philadelphia. The sky is cloudy but dry and it is a comfortable day in the City of Brotherly Love. The Philadelphia Phillies are hosting my beloved Cubs in their spanking new ballpark. BOX 2 January 2003 Rangers Sign Four, Serve Youth, Seek Health in 2003 During the last three weeks of 2002, the Rangers signed three relievers and an outfielder to one-year deals. Clearly, the Rangers are biding their time until 2004 when several large contracts will disappear , thereby releasing money for more serious and long-term free-agent acquisitions. 2003 is a year for developing several promising youngsters and trying to avoid the injuries that capsized the Rangers boat right out of the dock. Other than Ugueth Urbina, the newcomers have minimal fantasy implications. Ugueth Urtain Urbina The Rangers signed UGUETH URBINA to a one-year deal on December 22. As a result, FRANCISCO CORDERO moves into a setup role despite posting a 1.79 ERA and saving 10 games in 12 opportunities. Ugie undoubtedly improves a weak Ranger bullpen, but from a fantasy perspective he loses some value moving from Boston to Texas. The Rangers simply aren't as good as the Red Sox, so Urbina shouldn't get as many save opportunities, though a good closer will notch 30-35 saves even for an inferior team.

From the time he was a young boy growing up in New Jersey, Doug Glanville's future was mapped out for him. Doug's brother, who was seven years older, had a plan. Doug would become a major league baseball player. That meant getting Doug interested in the sport by playing Strat-O-Matic baseball. Even at the age of 5, Doug was great with numbers, and was able to comprehend the intricacies of Strat. (He would go on to earn a degree in Science and Systems Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, while also starring in baseball there.) So his love of sports and Strat grew in a complimentary fashion. Today, even though he's been a major leaguer for the past six years, Glanville still plays Strat. But Glanville hasn't been playing a whole lot of real baseball this season. In the middle of the season, he lost his job as the Phillies starting centerfielder, and has been relegated to occasional starts ever since.
Most Strat players don't have any problem figuring out why. Glanville's on-base percentage is too low, especially for a guy who's not a power hitter. Singles hitters with the ability to steal bases need to get on regularly to take advantage of their speed.

ESPN.com Revenge of the week When some guys hit two home runs in a game, they say it was because they kept their front shoulder tucked, they just happened to get good wood on the ball or, if they really get creative, it was "just one of those nights." Suffice it to say you'll never see a quote like that in Week in Review. Because there are men like Phillies center fielder Doug Glanville. Last Friday, he hit two home runs against his former teammate, Curt Schilling, in Schilling's first start against the Phillies since they traded him last July. Doug Glanville and Travis Lee will remain happy teammates as long as they stay away from the video games. Now the previous four men to hit two homers in a game off Schilling were Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, Mike Piazza and Barry Bonds. So it's not as if just anybody can step up there and do it. And how did Doug Glanville explain this performance? This is what he told the Philadelphia Inquirer's Bob Brookover minutes after he and the Phillies had dealt Schilling his first loss of the year:

Glanville quietly hangs up his spikes [Fred David/DP File Photo] Former Penn slugger retires after playing nine years for three MLB teams By matt meltzer July 7, 2005
After nine seasons in Major League Baseball, 1,115 career games and 3,964 at bats, Doug Glanville has hung up his cleats. Glanville was the 12th overall pick in the 1991 draft, taken by the Chicago Cubs, after he completed his junior year at Penn. Beating the odds and the stereotypes that Ivy League baseball players endure, Glanville had a successful career at the Major League level. He amassed a career .277 batting average. In 1999 he earned a career high .325 batting average, led the National League with 628 at-bats, and was first in the league in singles with 149 one-basers. Glanville spent time with the Cubs, the Texas Rangers, and the Philadelphia Phillies. In fact, the outfielder hit the first walk-off homerun in Citizens' Bank Park history in 2004. While there always may be a soft spot in the heart of Philadelphians for the swift center fielder ? who finished his career with 293 consecutive errorless games ? he may be best remembered for his heroics in a Cubs' jersey. In a critical Game Three of the 2003 National League Championship Series, Glanville was called upon by Cubs manager Dusty Baker to pinch hit for the Cubs in the top of the eleventh. With Kenny Lofton on first and one out, Glanville hit a liner past the Marlins' Mike Mordecai for a game-winning triple. It was Glanville's first triple of the season.
