Worth a look, Baseball-almanac presents: Record Books, Famous Firsts and Feats Top 10 Lists The Guru's top ten single season records by category for Batting and Pitching (SCROLL DOWN FOR TOP 10 LISTS!!) Batting Notes: Rankings were based on seasons from 1893 to 1998 and more than 400 plate appearances (ab+bb+hpb) were required. Percents for AVG and SLG were based on at bats. Percents for 2B, 3B, HR, SO and BB were based on plate appearances. SB% was based on SB attempts and more than 25 SB's were required to qualify. OPS was based on AVG+SLG. Runs Created was based on Bill James' formula as follows: =(([h]+[bb]+[hpb]-[cs])*([h]+[2b]+2*[3b]+3*[hr]) +.26*([bb]-[ibb]+[hpb])+.52*([sh]+[sf]+sb])) /([ab]+[bb]+[hpb]+[sh]+[sf]) The purpose of his formula was to create the ultimate statistic characterizing the total offense production of a player. However, it favors players with more games played, so for example, George Brett's .390 batting avg season ranks as his 2nd most productive even though it was easily his most productive per plate appearance. So, I calculated OPS too for comparative purposes.

Essays from the October 15, 2004 edition I stood at the plate - and faced Bob Gibson By Shannon Roe With the St. Louis Cardinals in the playoffs (and sporting the best record in the majors), my thought rambles back to 1986, when I donned the Cardinals uniform. My brief baseball career started with a desire to sing better - to hit those high notes, and with oomph! I began taking voice lessons from Sara, who quickly helped me sing the higher notes. But she said I needed to do situps to strengthen my "oomph" muscles. This oomph-quest turned out to be the first in a series of events that ultimately landed me in Busch Stadium, brandishing a bat at the legendary Bob Gibson.

Bing and Bob, Starring in "The Road to October"
by Steve Treder September 08, 2004 Bob Gibson and Lou Brock were both tremendous players, of course. Their places in the Hall of Fame are well deserved. Gibson was a 20-game winner 5 times, a Cy Young Award winner and an MVP, and of course, that 1.12 ERA in 1968 was a signature accomplishment. Brock had over 3,000 hits, scored over 1,600 runs, and retired with the all-time single-season and career stolen base records. Still, it must be acknowledged that a significant part of the lore of both the saga of exploits that burned the images of

Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 5 items Gibson, Bob , born in 1935, American baseball player, a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher known for his competitive intensity. He was respected for his fastball, which helped him win 251 major league games over 17 seasons (1959-1975), all while playing for the St. Louis Cardinals. Born Robert Gibson in Omaha, Nebraska, he played both baseball and basketball for Creighton University. Gibson signed a contract with the Cardinals in 1957 and played in the minor leagues, where his raw pitching skills were refined. He toured briefly with the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team in the winter of 1958 before pursuing baseball exclusively. Gibson's best year was 1968 when he earned 22 victories, set the major league season record for lowest earned run average (1.12), and struck out what was then a league-record 268 batters. Gibson was named the National League's most valuable player (MVP) for 1968 and also earned the first of his two Cy Young Awards (1968, 1970), given to the outstanding pitcher in each league.
