The 2005 World Series
Bob Gibson Bob Gibson's fastball was filled with the same intense rage as the man who launched it past helpless hitters for the better part of two decades. So was the sharp-breaking slider that some observers called the best of all time for a righthander. When Gibson was at his dazzling best, he almost made pitching seem unfair. Look at it from the batter's point of view. Gibson, cap pulled down low over a glowering face, sets his powerful jaw and stares at his newest worst enemy. Everything about him looks mean as he begins a three-quarters delivery that will propel the ball homeward. The full-body follow-through is the killer. It begins with right leg extended sideways and ends with a full running step forward and toward the first-base line. The man behind the scowl appears to be leaping toward you with hostile intent. That intense, unfriendly style served Gibson well over the 17 seasons (1959 to 1975) he provided an anchor for the St. Louis Cardinals' rotation, posting a 251-174 career record. Teammates described a man with "pride, dedication and a must-win" demeanor on the mound; a man who would bury a fastball in the batter's rib when he wanted to make a point. But they described the off-field Gibson as eloquent, bright and fun-loving, although his barbs were delivered with a cutting edge.

MLB Greatest Players THE 50 GREATEST MLB PLAYERS Bob Gibson As a child Gibson survived multiple illnesses and once nearly died. He grew up in poverty but by the time he was a teenager he was growing into a smart, tough young man. He was a star basketball and baseball player who briefly played with the Harlem Globetrotters. In 1957 he was signed by St. Louis, and two years later he made his major league debut. Like many pitchers, he took some time to mature, not winning twenty games until he was 29 years old. He first made the All-Star team in 1962, the same year he paced the NL in shutouts. In 1964 the Cards won the pennant and faced the Yankees in the World Series. After losing Game Two, Gibson won the fifth and seventh games within four days of each other, setting a Series record with 31 strikeouts in the process. The Cardinals had their first title in 18 years. In 1967 Gibson again sparkled in the World Series, this time against the Red Sox. He won Games One, Four, and Seven, pitching complete games each time. In his 27 innings he allowed a scant 14 hits, struck out 26, walked just five, and posted a 1.00 ERA. It was one of the greatest Series performances in history and he earned the MVP award for the effort.

Main February 21, 2003 Bob Gibson Sued: From the Miami Herald
Former baseball great Bob Gibson has been sued by an Omaha man claiming the Hall of Fame pitcher punched and kicked him last year in an act of road rage. Gibson's attorney, David Herzog, said the man's version is inconsistent with the facts.
Duh. Everyone knows Gibson would have thrown a ball at the guy's head. Gibson was guest analyst on Baseball Tonight once during it's first year in 1990. I have never seen the staff in Bristol so in awe of a person. Gibson sat there all day watching games, and one by one, people would go up and shake his hand and express their respect for his accomplishments. Gibson was polite about it, but I think he would have rather been left alone. The other thing I noticed about Gibson was that he was still in great shape. I had seen him the year before at an old-timers game at Fenway, and thought his fastball was still really good. Seeing him in person confirmed that this was a powerful human being. I think if Gibson had clocked this guy, he would have given him more than a black eye. Posted by David Pinto at 10:46 AM Baseball Navigation
